- Louis11, on 11/21/2008, -1/+102"Without being represented by an attorney, I defended myself in federal court against a company who solicited the services of two separate law firms," Stottlemire said. "And in my opinion, I kicked their ass."
- aolshove, on 11/21/2008, -0/+57Well, maybe it's because all coupons contain the phrase, "This coupon has no monetary value". It's hard to prosecute somebody for stealing something that you, yourself admits has no value. Or, maybe they just realized that the more people that redeem the coupons are BUYING MORE OF YOUR PRODUCT.
- jawbreaker4fs, on 11/22/2008, -0/+48It's weird that you both repeated the conversation verbatim a second time around.
- 5fifteen, on 11/22/2008, -0/+39Why did you ask the same questions twice?

John Stottlemire

I'm sure that you're aware that an article about you is on digg.com.
John Stottlemire
Yes, its all over the internet actually.
I'll be famous. ha ha ha. not quite what I wanted to be famous for "a coupon hacker" lol

The script thing kind of sounds like things that I did while in school for various websites.
John Stottlemire
it wasn't even a script. it was a batch file that used "erase" and "reg delete" commands
Visitor
Did it just delete the cookies or something? The article I read was pretty vague.
John Stottlemire
deleted 5 registry keys and two hidden files in the windows directory
Visitor
=) Nice.
John Stottlemire
the registry keys and files were very deceptively named
Visitor
Oh I bet.
John Stottlemire
like "autotrayhistoryenable"
Visitor
Haha, wow
John Stottlemire
and windows.shell.manifest.old
Visitor
How did you find it? did you do a diff of your registry after getting a coupon?
John Stottlemire
used regmon to see where it was writing in the registry and filemon to see what files it accessed
just in case it was appending data
Visitor
Ah, cool
John Stottlemire
nothing too hard, but I got sued for it. lol
Visitor
Yea, but you kicked their ass, and they wasted lots of money on lawyers.
John Stottlemire
the jury is still out if I actually kicked their ass (since no one knows the terms of the settlement)
but, I fought for 16 months against large lawfirms and survived... so I kicked the attorney's asses
Visitor
Props to you man. I'm out though. Thanks =)

You betrayed the man's trust. Way to go. - therealBEANS, on 11/21/2008, -0/+23If you go to his blog you can chat with him. He seems like a down to Earth guy and not in it for the money, looking out for the consumers and mentions he wants the world to know a normal people like us can go up against huge corporations and win.

- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+11THEY place data on the end user computer to prevent multiple coupons
USER removes data, which they have EVERY right to do
THEY sue user for removing data because it broke their program
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER rely on data on an end user system for your system to work right.....Bad programming will always nip you in the ass sooner or later. - kaosethema, on 11/22/2008, -1/+11Copy and Paste Trigger Happy

Dugg for lawyers getting theirs asses wupped by a human being!! - Khast, on 11/22/2008, -0/+10Wait, so now you can be sued for removing data off my own computer? I delete registry keys all the time, not for hacking purposes, but to keep it streamlined and free from orphans.
But, I guess I had better watch out, that 47KB I shaved out of my registry last time I did maintenance might land me in court. :O Oh noez!!! - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -4/+12That was a piece of ***** interview:
Visitor: LOL YOU KICKED THEIR ASS MAN, I WANT TO CIRCLE JERK ON YOUR FACE
John: umm...k
Visitor: Seriously, DUDE ASSKICKING LOLOL
John: ...
Visitor: I AM SO THE NEXT KATIE COURIC, YAGERBOMBS LOLOLOL ASSES KICKING - enantiodromia, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8it wasn't about stealing coupons. it was about hurting their business model.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+5One word - liability. I'm sure supermarket chains aren't heartless bastards and really would like to give things to the needy/homeless, but they are too fearful someone they could be held responsible if someone gets sick after eating their food. Other problem is there is no consistency to what they throw out so if people start getting accustomed to what they're receiving they'll get the ***** if the supermarket is 'holding out' on them.
Having worked at a large chain once, it's unbelievable just how much is wasted. Crushed carton - bin it. Dented can - bin it. It's a shame, but the risk is too much for them. - Thousand, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6Even worse, what's to stop parents from using all of these free coupons to purchase more cheap lunch meat for their children, forcing them into a preservative-ridden bologna hell?
THINK OF THE CHILDREN! - FountainDew, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5If super markets were so socially aware, instead of forcing employees to throw away and discard food (ie. cans with dents, bread with a hole in the bag, etc), why don't they quietly give away their unsellable food to the homeless and needy?
- ShittyPunGuy, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Visitor: What are you wearing? ;)

- AyaJulia, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Lulz, that's my father. -.-
...no, seriously. Might be nice if I saw a penny of that money for all the time my mom had to work multiple jobs while he didn't pay child support. ***** deadbeat. I could use it, immigration and education are expensive. But whatever, grats and ***** or something. - Pritchard, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2It's funny that someone named Gonasdude pasted the same thing twice. He's really consistent.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3If the services can be exploited companies will be hesitant to post coupons online. Whats to stop a few greedy people from ruining it for everyone?
- punkcat, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2haha, coupons are advertisements to buy products.
they would LOVE for you to exploit them. - linagee, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2"This coupon has no value except in the case of our business model."
- atonalpanic, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2@fountaindew:
Some stores like Kroger occasionally do this. My mom works there and every now and then they give boxes of fruit and other small items to the homeless. Maybe that was just that one manager though... - jeffkee, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3I'm hungry.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Right off the bat I'm going to have to say that you're absolutely right, however...
Having worked in a grocery store for three years one of the reasons their is a limit of one coupon per person is so that a minority of people don't buy up everything. When this does happen an innocent cashier has to deal with angry customers wondering "Isn't the special today? Why is their none in stock!?". It's bad for business.
You're right, whether a minority of people buy up all the discount product or if everyone has a fair share doesn't make a difference financially as long as you sell everything, right? But in the first scenario there are many angry customers and in the second their are relatively few (said people who somehow need a year's worth of discount toilet paper). It's more social than financial. - AyaJulia, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2You're absolutely right, really. He's been a thief since the day I was born, if not the day he was born... even spending time in prison for trying to defraud the German government while stationed there in the Army. Good for you to see through it.

- opticwind, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3I don't know why we are supporting him. Even if it brought business to the company that's not his decision to make. I mean...just because he is a hacker, it doesn't mean he's doing something good.
- bobbknight, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1No defeat, just a pull out.
- infinitejones, on 11/22/2008, -0/+0Is it just me or is the site down at the moment? All I get is a blank page - not even a server or dns error. Going through translate.google.com seems to work fine but I don't know whether that's a translation of the live site or a Google snapshot...
