The Australian Government: 0 - brikj, on 03/27/2009, -0/+50This is righteous!
- frink, on 03/27/2009, -0/+47Please, won't somebody think of the children? If only mainstream Joe average knew (or cared) that his freedom to choose what is right or wrong and to stay informed is slowly evaporating.
- Tedricks, on 03/27/2009, -0/+40Kudos to who ever pulled this off. You know it's well deserved if you've been following this farce of an internet filtering scheme being implemented down under.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -1/+37Let free people decide for themselves what is "obscene"
Nothing but more control from the self righteous, sexually repressed religious nuts - RC212V, on 03/27/2009, -0/+25I have a feeling that this sort of clash between governments who attempt to censor internet access and hackers is going to become a lot more common in the coming years. Governments at both ends of the political spectrum are becoming more aware and afraid of the power that access to the world's information is and thus are going to take more and more drastic steps to curtail it [access].
The interesting thing will be to see how a segment of hackers will become tomorrow's revolutionaries and freedom fighters. Even more interesting will be to see how far towards authoritarianism some of these Western democracies will go to try and stop them. I sincerely hope that those pushing for censorship fail because if it happens in places like Australia and England we will be next. - angusm, on 03/27/2009, -0/+25Defacing the website is one thing. Altering the blacklist itself would have been truly spectacular. Just think of the fun they could have with that ...

- USAOwnz, on 03/27/2009, -0/+15***** right. These aussies deserve a ***** medal for badass and freedom.
- Lemonblood, on 03/27/2009, -0/+13The Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, has admitted that Bill Henson images were added to the communications regulator's list of prohibited websites in error, while blaming the addition of a dentist's site to the blacklist on the "Russian mob".

for those not aware, Australia is bringing in the most draconian censorship laws to bring it into Line with totalitarian states like China.
This will set a dangerous president for other western nations so I suggest you make your voice heard before your leader enact similar legislation and slow down you connection 75% - protogenxl, on 03/27/2009, -0/+9With a Melon?

- InfiniteNothing, on 03/27/2009, -0/+7FTA: "However, not all the sites are offensive, and include links to rank-and-file pornography, YouTube videos, poker sites, WikiLeaks entries and even URLs to a Queensland dentist and dog-boarding kennel."
I wonder how the journalists were able to figure out which of those sites were benign without breaking the law themselves. I hope they wiped their cache. - m4csrgh3yk3v, on 03/27/2009, -0/+7It was the Russian mob. Ask Stephen Conroy.

- gotflash, on 03/27/2009, -1/+7That is really too bad. I hope these criminals are caught and severely punished. Our children use the internet everyday and we shouldn't have to worry about them viewing obscene material. If only the whole world would follow Australia's lead and filter all the undesirable content from the internet, it would be a better place for us all. I am also a Christian white male from Texas and I am pro-life. Abortion is murder! etc etc
- derekmas10, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6perhaps the melons with which they must be killed are chunks of lead with cesium cores recently misplaced in China.
- CaptOblivious, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5I think the best defacement would have been to display the list of sites they wish to block, then they would have to defend why they wanted to do so to the affected public.
- JasPruett, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3This has to be one of the most amusing things I have ever seen in my entire life.
- cesig, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4Fail.
- fattony89, on 03/28/2009, -0/+3i wont be the only one rioting if that fking list is implemented.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4I love how they say "Hackers" as if it likely took more than one to hack a government website.

You can watch the minister worm wiggle to public questions - c0axm3tal, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Well, organized crime in Russia has a well known vendetta against Australian dental care.

... and support the effort to remove him from office. Australia (and the world) deserves a free and open internet. - Evolve, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2If you actually looked at the leaked list you would see that its blatantly obvious which links are child porn and which are not.
And also its not illegal to view content if you are investigating it. (if it was otherwise then the child porn police would also be illegal). - 1d0n7kn0wwh01am, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2I know I don't need some *officials* to decide what my standards of obscene material is. I want to decide for myself. I think that if someone finds something offensive, then don't watch it or visit that site, etc. This is pretty much the equivalent of book banning.
With this ability, the government can decide, subjectively, what the people can and cannot see. Knowledge is power, and that knowledge helps people make a better informed decision about things. People who know more might question authority. And that could be *disruptive* to the government's agenda. Or even lead to disobedience!!! They need *sheep* not citizens with their own opinions and thoughts.
In my opinion, censorship should not exist in a truly free country. If Australia succeeds, are we next? - diggnidy, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2"Come join our ALIEN SPACE PARTY"
