- duffman03, on 11/25/2008, -3/+48put em in movie theaters.
- madwaxer, on 11/25/2008, -2/+38some smartass is going to build one and set it up in a mall to shut up all those annoying teens yapping along endlessly and loudly!
- BluBerryGTI, on 11/25/2008, -1/+23someone should put them in police cars cause i always see cops on the phone while they are driving and we will get a ticket if we do that. oh yea this is a CA thing.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+18says the sixteen year old
- Morac, on 11/25/2008, -1/+13It would be great to be able to use one of these and jam all those idiots who drive around with a cell in their ear, oblivious to everything else happening around them.
- derek20cali, on 11/25/2008, -1/+12The law exempts emergency services personnel while operating an authorized emergency vehicle.
- elie195, on 11/25/2008, -0/+10you don't need to jam my cellphone..my iphone seems to have a jammer built in
- djs71a, on 11/25/2008, -0/+10What would happen then is instead of only halfway paying attention to driving, they would have all their attention on the phone, trying to see why it isn't working.
- harrisbradley, on 11/25/2008, -0/+10"Cell jammers" means a whole different thing in prison. don't ask.
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/25/2008, -1/+10I was just thinking that it'd be cool to have one in my car to mess with all the idiots I pass who are gabbing away on their phones and not paying attention to their driving, then I realized that I'd probably end up getting killed when soccer mom in the minivan next to me looks at her phone and tries to figure out why her call got dropped rather than paying attention to the 18-wheeler on the highway in front of her and ends up swerving into me when the 18-wheeler suddenly brakes.
- knightwalkerz, on 11/25/2008, -1/+10madwaxer, are you one of those old dudes who people watches for 3 hours and ends up falling asleep in those comfy chairs?
- Jeremyz0r, on 11/25/2008, -0/+8I prefer cell phone users to the obnoxiously loud laughers.
Scratch that, parents that bring their babies. At least beat it!? - Ymeg, on 11/25/2008, -2/+9"First time offenders may face either fines of up to $11,000 or a year in prison for each violation."
Looks like I'm not making one... - disrupter, on 11/25/2008, -2/+9You can order those here: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11510
- ManHammer, on 11/25/2008, -2/+8Pretty easy to build if you know what you're doing...
- ProteasHaet, on 11/25/2008, -2/+8Do go on.
- nickbou, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6While the use of these devices may be prohibited, you can still use passive interference to block cell reception. Ever gone through a tunnel and lost a call? All that concrete and dirt block the signal. Obviously we can't make prisons with walls that thick, but we don't need to. Cell phones operate at known frequencies so using the right material and some math you can design a relatively thin layer that will reflect those frequencies and either build it into your structure or apply it afterward.
Unfortunately, it would seem such an undertaking in a structure as a large as a prison would be cost-preventive compared to the jammers and also wouldn't allow cell reception for the guards/staff of the prison. Just throwing it out there as an alternative that sidesteps the law. - winstonsmith303, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6How dare they turn prisons into police states.!! ;-)
- Markers, on 11/25/2008, -1/+7If any EE out there is interested in building one, check out the Wave Bubble...
http://www.ladyada.net/make/wavebubble/ - BlatheringIdiot, on 11/25/2008, -2/+8There are many fine men and women in Selective Law Enforcement.
- disrupter, on 11/25/2008, -1/+7Close your porn first
- winstonsmith303, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6Wait those are illegal? Hmmm... this makes it only THAT much harder to keep those women locked in my basement if I have to check them for cell phones first.
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/25/2008, -2/+7The reason they don't is liability, thanks to the lawsuit crazy nation we live in... If there was a doctor watching a movie and he didn't receive a critical life-or-death type of phone call because the theater was using jammers you can bet that the doctor and/or the patient would sue the hell out of the theater. (Yeah, yeah, I know - the doctor shouldn't have been there if he was expecting such a critical call yadda yadda) The point is that if theaters do this then at some point some idiot will undoubtedly file a lawsuit because they missed what they considered to be a critically important call, whether from a babysitter, a hospital, or anything in between.
- shig, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6Spotted a Trooper texting going down the highway the other day. Couldn't get the camera out in time. He was doing 80 in a 65. =[
- FredFredrickson, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5Sorry, but I really don't think the people who play their music so loud that they can't hear horns or emergency vehicles are listening to NPR.
- Jaliyl, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5As long as you don't use it like a moron or burst out laughing when Mr/Ms. Loudmouth Douchebag gets cut off, your chances of getting caught are pretty slim.
Although even if you've never used it, you'd be screwed if you were searched for any reason. - yunus, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5More likely would be the lawsuit from the guy sitting in the coffee shop next to the theater. Interference doesn't just stop at a wall.
- jamesgott, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6my friend has that exact model pictured. 300 bucks on craigslist. makes for great fun in traffic. makes for more fun in guitar hero contests- it knocks out xbox 360 wireless controllers instantly.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4I know exactly what I'll do with it.
- ultrafez, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4I doubt someone would complain about other road users using mobile phones if they were doing it themselves.
- dirtyhipster, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4we can only dream
- ViperX116, on 11/25/2008, -1/+5It's the ***** mall. What do you expect?
- secrity, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't consider it sidestepping the law, it is just physics.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4More work, more expensive, more waste... sounds right up their alley.
- Jaliyl, on 11/25/2008, -1/+5Buy your own loudass car stereo and blast static... or better music.
- reaper527, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4there are legal ways to block cell phone signals. it might be a crime to use a device such as this, but there is nothing wrong with thick concrete walls.
on a side note, the idea of the companies pushing for legislation to help increase their sales seems a bit corrupt to me - Innagadadavida, on 11/25/2008, -1/+5says the fifteen year old
- rupric, on 11/25/2008, -3/+7I want one... don't know what I'll do with it but I want one.
- Finalreminder, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3I've got a hand held jammer, they're great. Blocks 3G, GSM and CSD
Bought it because a woman at work was *never* off her bloody mobile to her boyfriend, and I mean never!
Let her answer...jam the signal...let her answer...talk a bit...jam the signal
lol
She's been fired now for using the work phone to excess despite warnings. - Barackalypse, on 11/25/2008, -2/+5Alternatively, they could get a signal detector and track down the phones that are in the prison illegally. Although that's more work, but what can you expect from a Government run organization?
- ventralnet, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3God Bless Chips
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3A more useful device would be a "***** jammer".
- sinkhead, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Maybe to give the site some credibility, I order from here all the time. You can check my Digg history or whatever, and my reviews on the site if you need proof, although I can't really give more than that.
- HappyScrappy, on 11/25/2008, -1/+4Ridiculous. If you're worried about inmates using cell phones, just set up a local sell cite and have it only allow whitelisted phones to work. Other phones could be tracked down through the same site.
Catching the people would be more useful than just stopping them. - Jeremyz0r, on 11/25/2008, -3/+5Police states here we come!
- tomis, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2OMG there are terrorists selling flavored crack-cocaine candy to our kids right outside of their schools! There's a knife epidemic! Inmates are using cell phones!! Be afraid of the outside world! Very afraid!!!!
And other such ***** designed to push a hidden agenda and/or a product. - Knowltey, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Screw RECEIVING a call
dial 911 ... nothing on the other end. - winstonsmith303, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2God Bless the CHP.
- XZanatos, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2While cell phone jammers are illegal, materials that block cell phone signals aren't. It would be easy enough to put an insulating layer in or around the building to block cell phones.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3I had to read your comment three times. Unfortunately, it became less intelligent each time I reread it.
