- uglyredhonda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Heading is entirely misleading and inaccurate. Read the actual story. The guy from Homeland Security made the comment during a panel at a conference. Sony wasn't there and wasn't involved: there was no "had a talk with Sony" as described in the heading. Bush was only related because he appointed the guy - this wasn't a Bush Administration "decree" as it were.

NO DIGG. - Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This story is silly political spin. Sony knew it was dead in the water as soon as the IT guy showed Howard Stringer how to get his e-mail and he started reading the flames from all over the world. One comment is going to change a major corporation's mind? Bull.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General of Torture is trying to criminalize downloading. Wonder how much the RIAA gave in campaign donations? Rootkit this. - hanshasuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, I asked Sony to back down in a really sweet voice and, well, I guess they thought better of it.
- tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Bush could, on his own, find the cure for cancer and people would start blaming him for overpopulation. It is sad when a person cannot say someone did something right and just leave it at that. Makes the person commenting seem petty and full of just hate for the man. Not what he does.
And the Republicans are for big business crap is so old. You sound so generic when you spout this crap people. - geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bush Administration =/= Bush the person.
Stupid political n00bz - catullus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow. both Microsoft and Jorge Arbusto doing something good in response to sony's quagmire. surprising to say the least

You know what, if I pay $15 for a CD, it's my CD.
I own it, and everything on it. I can do whatever the hell I damn well please with it. That's what you get for selling it; it's mine now.
If they don't like it, try to stop me and the millions of people who do it.
***** YOU Bush, RIAA, MPAA, SONY, and all the other companies who claim to still own the product in which I ***** bought.

Actually, you paid for personal use of the material. If you try to record and sell the material as your own you would be sued. Your $15 doesnt give you the rights to the material, only the rights ro "use" the material. Same thing with software, not of the open source variety of course. You "rent" the software per the contract you agreed to when you install said software. Whether you agree with it or not, its the law. Despite your reasons, breaking that contract or using the material for anything other than what you purchased the rights for is illegal, per the law. Now you can break the law all you want, doesn't make it legal. Maybe you wont get caught, maybe you will. But those laws exist to protect the livelyhood of the artists. Now dont misunderstand. I all for better laws. Laws that protect the artists but keep big buisness from winning and the artist getting screwed. "Intellectual Property" exists to protect everyday people. You write a book or a poem it can be protected as your idea so you can make money off of it. You write a song, paint a scene, or photograph an object, you work is copyrighted.
Perhaps when you grow up and actually make a product you would like to make a living off of, you will understand.
The problem is, today people are more apt to steal the material and break the law, instead of trying to change the system. Its the snowball effect. The companies will never stop going after revenue they feel is owed to them. People will always steal. And as long stealing cuts into that revenue they will come up with schemes like DRM. - CoolHandLuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Bush didn't say it, the Bush Administration did. difference = Bush would have used an analogy comparing Sony to Squidward from Spongebob."
So when the "Bush administration" does something wrong or bad... you don't grab your hood, sunglasses, and poorly written sign then head out to picket Bush directly, right? (E.G. Lewis Libby)
If he gets criticized directly for the things the "administration" says/does then he should get credit for the things the "administration" does. You can't have it both ways. - blah509, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I highly doubt Bush or his administration had anything to do with Sony backing down. I would probably put my money on public pressure.

Matty is right here.. couldn't have said it better.. - bchang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thank you Mr. President
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I though it was Digg that made them back off ;)
- Maverick83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"yet everytime something bad happens in this country, bush is automatically held responisble."
There's a good reason.
He's everywhere. Like a god or something.
Just the other day Bush killed my puppy. And banned my account on WoW. And then he formatted my hard drive.
Damnit all to hell. - terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Bush uses a powerbook. (That's an Apple, for those who didn't know.) So, that makes me suspect that someone else informed him of the sit-e-ation
- kwilliam71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have some good news: I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

AHH, it's nothing but *****. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@CoolHandLuke: The Bush Adminstration had NOTHING to do with this. They might LIKE to take credit, but it looks very foolish.
If Sony HADN'T backed down, it would have faced some VERY negative response from the marketplace, and aside from that, I suppose the lawsuits and pissed off customers had absolutely nothing to do with it... - el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"***** SONY. From now on I'm ripping off all your *****."

That will teach them...teach them to do crazy stuff like this DRM... - ozjmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stewart Baker, you just got some major points in my book :)
- abeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"That's why Sony backed down yesterday and declared that they would remove this particular DRM from all of their products...TEMPORARILY."
I wouldn't trust Sony see the last word of the sentence... TEMPORARILY.. lets see what they have up their sleeves - search, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It's very important to remember that it's your intellectual property -- it's not your computer."
Lets repeat that... - torunforever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On topic... Sony is stupid. Good for the Bush Administration.
Off topic... "thunk" is a colloquialism, and perfectly acceptable in casual conversation. Anyway, I'd take "ain't" or "thunk" over "LOL" or "LMFAO" any day. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey maverick ha ha....... (sarcasticly while downloading music and playing the dancing bush game)
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you, Mr. President and the administration. SONY=PWNED
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG the Bush Admin against Sony!?!!? Who's the bad guy!?!?
OMFG -head explodes-
ahaha, you people are crazy. - TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""""You know Bush is such a hypocrite.
Only if after the people get out of jail, the government installs a rootkit on their computer. Didn't realize this was the case.""""""""
Wow. You can't even make a sentence can you?
Eric Wilson - fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Way to go Bush. Thats one of the many reasons why I support you and vote for you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now the Bush admin needs to tell them selves that with the rash of internet tapping they are trying to enforce.
- stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story just keeps getting deeper. I have no idea who at sony thought they could get away with installing rootkits in peoples computers. Lets hope sony gets more than a slap on the wrist.
- DullesGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not true. Essentially, Sony was establishing restrictions on their OWN trade. It's not un-Republican of him at all.
BTW, Bush - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maverick, I hate it when he does that :(
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, despite the bad write up, good news. I now see why some folks were cheering when this news first broke (myself included). This FINALLY was the kick in the ass alot of people needed to see how badly the content providers were pushing draconian DRM.
Maybe it isn't too late to save HD-DVD and BluRay from being DRMed into oblivion. - Jackel003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0owned
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I'm loving how the people insulting Bush can't even form a coherent, correctly spelled sentence themselves.
Bunch of idgimamits! - rosemat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0about time they did something right
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was susprised the Bush Admin did anything about it. Props to them for once.
- mattyG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol its so ironic how everytime it someone says the bush admin. did something good, everyone else says it wasnt the bush admin. but something else.
yet everytime something bad happens in this country, bush is automatically held responisble. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go on, occupy Japan. It made things better in the forties.
- mattyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0right.. like hurricane katrina...
- code007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know Bush is such a hypocrite. He tells Sony to back down right, but yet him and his administration agrees that there should be much strickter jail time for those who violate the copyright laws.
- sm2049, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I count the name "Bush" used in this thread...59 times. I count third grade grammatical errors...98 times. I count sony being my bitch... priceless
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Bush calls the Internet the Internets...'nuff said regarding his knowledge."
Uhm...the Internet is a collection of internets. Prior to when Algore invented it, the term "internet" was understood to mean a group of networks which are linked. "Interlinked Networks." Internet. Semantically speaking, Bush was correct. You have internets. They are connected to form the Internet. (Note capitalization.)
Jesus folks, if you're going to pick on the man, do it over something substantive. - recover82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0first of all, i thought you were all idiots before i read into your "politics". secondly, suckit!
i'd say that about covers it.
actually read the article before you digg and give your two cents ya buncha *****. - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sony es muy *****
- midgetbus87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony got pwn3d.
- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought I made them backdown :(
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad to see SOMEONE has finally stood up to all this *****. I get fed up of media companies owning the job all the time. Nice to see a senior government figure over there stand up and shout GET YOUR HANDS OFF PEOPLE'S COMPUTERS!
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"sony es muy *****"
teh Awesome! - Fieri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not surprised. Bush has always favored individual freedom.
