- Polaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If people think about it for a second, this is actually a pretty good idea. Sony is vulnerable to tech fiends in a manner unmatched by other record companies, because, AFAIK, they still get more revenue from sales of computers, TVs, stereos, game consoles, etc. than they do from content sales. Just pick another TV brand when you're in the market. The ONLY thing that should be remotely tough to lay off of is the PSP and new PlayStation.
- WJMoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do we know if any of the artists whose CDs feature XCP are in favour of it or requested it? If so I'd be boycotting them too.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was looking at some headphones yesterday. I wanted to buy them, but then the whole Sony thing popped into my mind. There is one lost sale for you Sony.
- LDinOR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sony is Sony, boycott the whole, not just part. Gotta wonder if it hadn't already occurred to them that they could put the root kit on all the computers they sell.
Holding off on the PS3 and not lusting after that Vaio so much now. - derbykid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will Do
- julian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YES, Boycott SONY until
-Sony Recalls ALL Root kit "infected" CDs
-Has on their website an uninstalled option on there main page, with NO emails or "HOOPS" one has to jump through to get it (NOT providing information to get it).
-Offer FULL refunds to anybody that wants to return his or her infected CD
-Publicly admit they made a mistake, and should have not installed software without an "FULL UNINSTALL OPTION" and not notified the consumer about the "hacker" technology being installed.
-Revised their EULA so that paying consumers actually own the CD content they purchased, and INCLUDE "Fair Use" provisions.
-Bend over backwards in offering goodwill gestures.
Boycott for at least six months until they listen, take notice, and comply with these reasonable provisions. If not take another six months.

Your vote (the almighty DOLLAR) is what SONY listens to, make it count.
Curtail your SONY purchase, buy another brand.
Other companies will think twice before they violate consumer’s choice, privacy and security.
THIS THE FLASH POINT, THIS THE LAST STRAW.... - julian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Think of it, what is Sony's market share in music, I bet its more than 20%...so at least 1 out 5 people who buy music CD's are at risk.
And ALL those people have access to a computer (Home, School, Work, etc), where if they played the CD in it, causes security risk that's presently UN-INSTALLABLE, and these people are unaware of it; why there computers are messing up , slowing down, losing CD drives. People lend, give, sell these CD's to more unsuspecting People.
And all this has been from sales of CD's since 2004, how many millions of SONY CD's have been sold since then. VIRUS writers are using these computers to hide in, in which the software CANNOT be safely uninstalled and the people are UNAWARE of Sony's hidden software and much less of the VIRUSES and TROJANS it can hide.
How many companies have compromise security, for someone played a music CD at work. THIS software also "PHONES HOME".
VERY VERY BAD INDEED.
We should not let up, we should keep this in the news for as long as possible, a lot of people are not computer savvy to understand how SERIOUS this is. Because it came from left field, and NOT ONE person would suspect that a music CD would be dangerous; and for that, NO ONE cared early on in 2004, that's why we have this mess today.
This has done more damage that P2P, where people understand that you are playing with fire, and as such protect themselves accordingly. NOT from music CD's.
More time and widespread is this information needed, so ignorant people get whats happening, before more dangers arise because of this FIASCO.
BOYCOTT SONY for at least 6 months...spread the word.
People will wonder why the BOYCOTT and ask questions accordingly, then they will be knowledgeable of the SERIOUSNESS of this action against a prominent company.
SONY want to keep it low key, understandable. But less people are informed, the CD's are still out there, compromising more computers.
SONY used the cover of DRM to put this stuff in, and it should be a wake-up call; as to the abuse of companies using DRM and the DMCA to criminalizing and compromising Consumers CHOICE, PRIVACY, SECURITY; and rival companies INNOVATIONS, all for the all mighty Dollar$$$
THIS THE FLASH POINT, THIS THE LAST STRAW....
use this and continue the momentum for change in the DRM, DMCA, EULA, and for consumers "FAIR USE" being taken seriously by all companies.
KEEPING PEOPLE TAKING ABOUT IT, will make companies advertise and promote that they are safe, be upfront with our RIGHTS in there EULA to gain our trust and OUR Dollars$$$, congress could be more consumer friendly, when up against large businesses that want to change laws in their favor.
Think about it. The momentum is here, now ... Don't let it die down.
Help Support EFF.ORG - inthe80s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Has anyone setup a proper boycott site with logos webmasters can use to inform their visitors? I'd love to post a decent size "BOYCOTT SONY" logo across all my sites (mostly dealing in music) to get the word out.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm already on an involentary boycott called a budget.
- riffermike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a list of the affected cds and some other good tips: http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004144.php.
- Deenem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, lets all boycott Sony a week before the XBox 360 comes out... Microsoft must be laughing all the way to the bank.
- CKer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All I say is if they are doing this to CD'S what are they doing in Vaio device drivers, on the coming ps3, on DVD's or with their online games. Serious I would not trust these people with my info or property
- B111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Everyone saying that boycotting Sony's other divisions won't hurt the media divsion:
Sony is Sony, the money goes to the same coffers. Putting pressure on the other divisions will force those divisions to go to the board of directors and ask something be done of the "wayward son" that is hurting their numbers. Moreover, the more pain it brings Sony OVERALL, the quicker they are to change course over at the media divsions.
Moreover, to say that the media division is not tied in is silly. What does (or did anyways) Sony use to advertise the TVs? Spiderman 2. Wonder why they push those UMDs so much for the PSP? Oh, maybe because they want to sell SONY movies to you twice. It is ALL connected. - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony Electronics is no completely independent of Sony Entertainment. The mini-disc did not play mp3s originally. Do you think that Sony Entertainment had no influence on that? Do you think Sony Entertainment has nothing to do with the DRM on blu-ray? The fact is that Sony Entertainment has their fingerprints all over anything that plays their material. This WILL include the PS3 and blu-ray.
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We should not only boycott Sony until they change their ways, but I wonder also how effective a national boycott of the entire recording industry? Not forever, but for a week or a month-just long enough to get their attention and to get the point across that restricting how, when, and where we can listen to the music that we paid for is unacceptable.
- lenlewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.sonyboycott.org
Remember, too, that many companiees (like Columbia) are part of the Sony organization. Just 'cause it don't say Sony don't mean don't boycott it.
(also http://www.boycottsony.org/ ) - bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been boycotting them for a while. I'll not buy any of their products, and probably never will again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2CDs aside, just by the principle of the thing (you kids do know what that is. No, not the head of a school) people should boycott Sony. Sony is an arrogant 800 lbs gorilla that thinks they can do anything they want to to their customers. Well, ***** 'em.
I have several Sony products now. My PSP (though it might not be considered mine by Sony), my digital camera, my PS2 and who knows what else. But I'll be buying no more PSP games, no more Sony electronics, No more Memory Sticks (if I can help it, guffaw guffaw *rolls eyes*). No more movies. No more CDs. Which means I've gotta be extremely careful what I buy.
Thanks Sony for being such a bunch of ***** that I have to now be careful about what I buy.
BTW, I'll be mod chipping my PS2 to play pirate PS2 games just to spite Sony. ;) - icu_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2'. . . the PS3 and PSP should not be boycotted against.'
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=principle
When they came to install root kits we stood aside and watched . . .
All I can say for sure is that next time I am left with a choice I'll be avoiding Sony if at all possible. Sure the execs can plead ignorance, but I'd be nice to 'Enhance' their bottom-line if possible. - pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like many have also stated, I too am already boycotting Sony. But I don't think it's enough to boycott them short-term. I ask all of you to boycott Sony forever. This was such an affront to the consumer-supplier relationship, that I want to do my part to make sure no company ever tries anything like this again.
The best way I can think of to help accomplish this is try to affect Sony's revenues as deeply as possible, for as long as possible. It would send a big signal to other companies if the PS3 has dismal sales, if every Sony owned movie flops, and if Sony CD sales plummet...and none of it ever recovers.
So start evangelizing alternatives to Sony to your less tech-savvy friends, let them know why, and keep your hopes up for a brighter future. - TheWarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been boycotting those morons for a while now. All they do is make crap.
- firblitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This hurts for me... I want a PSP and a Sony HD TV... but I'm sticking with the boycott, that rootkit crap is ridiculous
- Boilerblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know that at least some of the artists whose CD's have the DRM are not pleased at all. Tim Foreman of Switchfoot posted a message to their message board stating that they are very much against the DRM on their CD, they did all they could to fight it, and he explains how to get around it. I bought the dualdisc so I'm not affected. Switchfoot is a great band and I have a lot of respect for the guys, unfortunately their record label doesn't deserve much respect.
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm getting a little fed up with all of this ham-fisted tomfoolery by these big labels and their hand-in-glove relationship with the likes of the IRA .. sorry, the RIAA.
I read an article last week that covers a rumour doing the rounds amongst the technorati.
Apparently, the big media labels are hoping to tie stuff down so much, that you'll have to pay a fee every time you want to 'rewind'.
Which means, you pay to 'own', and then you pay to play.
The big labels are also pushing to force Apple to give them a share on the sales of the various iPods.
They feel that it's only fair that they take a cut 'coz Apple are making so much money from their music.
While in the really real world, they should be bloody grateful to Apple from stemming a possible piracy phenomena.
The fact is, the effort that the labels and these organisations are puttin' into stamping out illegal media swapping and the like is grossly disproportionate to the problem.
I've signed... - deadpixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1botcott in progress already... and what will a recall do? the damage is done already.
- Nik420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How about we boycott Microsoft? You the ones that allow such a flaw to happen. As always"
Not that I like Microsoft (OSX user), but a root kit can be made for any OS if it is installed with Admin access. This is Sony's pony all the way to the finish. - Raptor007, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Actually, that's not tough at all. The DS and 360 are both better in their respective fields.
- whickywhickyjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shame on you you Sony. You have sold out and betrayed the legacy of Akio Morita. I certainly will not be purchasing anything Sony in the future.
- jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1poor sony! doesn't anyone care about their feelings? I bet they've been weeping all weekend :(
oh wait, nevermind - Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In response to the link posted above, (USA Today), halting production and doing a total recall are two different things. I do not have any problem with this rootkit as others do...mainly because I don't buy all this ***** "mainstream" music, and therefore, have never been at risk :)
*waves techno glowsticks in the air*
Dugg for interest though :) - dnt4getdawld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ahve always been a sony man. I prefer a playstation to all other systems. however when a multi-billion dollar company stoops to the level of installing malware on the computers of their contributers... wtf? i had every intention of purchasing a psp and a ps3, but now i fear that i cannot. i do not believe that i can buy any sony merchandise until sony recalls the infected cd and reprints them without the rootkit and they release the software to completely remove the software from every computer that has been tainted. even after this happens i do not believe that i will be able to purchase sony equipment in the same level that i used to.
- Lainy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree Jammerdelray the whole music industry needs a major overhauling. Sony is just the tip of the ice burg
- oohBattman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this mean i can't watch Australian Idol?
time to swing a sack of door knobs, time to boycott the boycott on boycotts!
angry, angry people, does anyone actually buy cd's? I don't blame them for wanting to protect their music, but a campaign focused on hurting their legitimate customers seems like a move in the wrong direction.
They should be rewarding people for buying cd's, not punishing them.
The last thing i bought from sony was a mini disk player 5 or so years ago... so sure, ill join your boycott. - NeoLuddite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm all with you, but here I have a problem. I received a PSP as a gift. I don't need it, I don't want it, but I feel like a total ass for telling my sister that I don't want to accept a very expensive gift. How do I continue witha boycott (that I fully support) without looking like a jackass to my family?
- geforceter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** ...got to hell
- Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** SONY
I'm taking all their ***** from now on. - hellsyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Idea of Boycotting Sony sounds great. Yet, if all of us really want to effect change then let us all hit all the A-Holes of this world RIAA and the likes with a BOYCOTT! All I am asking is for a 30 day Boycott of purchasing any and all MUSIC, MOVIES and anything else that connects to the MPAA, RIAA, SONY and any other company / organization that seeks to mess around with our person, property and freedom. Just 30 days and they will be on the knees begging us! That is how you make things happen for all.
This includes apple and ***** "fairplay"! Stop buying ipods, imacs, ibooks, itunes, shuffles, and nanos. Anything you can get your hands on toss it out the window. Lets show them what fair use should be! - JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree the cd thing was wrong, but sony is a pretty darn good comapny... and by the looks of things i really feel bad for them, PSP...thats a disaster, hacks for the firmware are being found nearly every other month and then the cd thing... its a good company i just hope 2 little small things like this sink them.
[Proud owner of a sony psp 1.5 never updated or downgraded] - davegoshorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, boycott Sony... Then we can get back at them for making some of the best electronics on the market.
As said in another comment, Sony Music is just a small branch of Sony. Why should a great company pay for some non-informed lead idiot's bad decision in their music division? - cfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am going to boycott the xbox 360 for the hell of it
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are just going to find a more hidden way to do it.
- Nikon_Boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The article expresses amazement that Sony has shown no contrition for its actions. Could it be because this is just the tip of the iceberg? Has anyone checked to see if Sony has loaded similar software elsewhere such as with their MP3 players or preloaded on their laptops and desktops?
- KriTenKs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol, this is madness. Anybody want to handover their psp to me for free? :p Talk is cheap, i bet all of these idiots will go to see spiderman 3 when it comes to the big screen.
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Already doing so. Can't think of a better thing than to refuse to buy Sony products until they get the idea. They need learn their lesson.
- vmlemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm just wondering, if everyone boycotts Sony (say tomorrow, or in a weeks time even), and proceeds to destroy almost anything and everything Sony, wouldn't that mean that you'd have to destroy more than just Sony-labeled products?
If you think of how many products have Sony components inside of them, or use Sony technology, you'd have to destroy A LOT of things...
Just my 2 pence. - alphadog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boycott Sony products! How long do you think they can last if America decides not to purchase any of there products. This boycott will be the least of Sonys' problems once the Justice system gets through with them.
If I legally purchase a product I should be able to use that product any way that I see fit for my own personal enjoyment. - abeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Has anyone setup a proper boycott site with logos webmasters can use to inform their visitors? Just a start I made some logos and put them on cafe press. all items at cost. I get no commission
