- nitsnipe, on 12/14/2007, -8/+45We should have kept this away from Digg. Imagine now the overload of 15 year-olds downloading this while servers are being strained at max. And then later realizing that before they can "hack their friends computer" they have a lot of stuff to actually learn. Starting with whats a command line and how not to do something stupid.
- Sirusdv, on 12/14/2007, -1/+28This so called "strain" helps us download torrents much faster.
- MUkillnine, on 12/14/2007, -0/+22For those of you who don't know, Backtrack is a LIVE bootCD (meaning it doesn't require you to install it on a part of your hard drive, though that is an option if you chose) that is oriented towards testing the security of networks. It has many powerful tools that can indeed be used for good as well as evil. Regardless, for anyone who is interested in computers, or the security of their personal networks, Backtrack is probably the only place you need to go to get all the resources to test your system.
Check out the wiki at http://backtrack.offensive-security.com - AHp33, on 12/14/2007, -1/+16BackTrack helped me connecting to my neighbours wifi :)

USB/DVD - http://www.offensive-security.com/bt3b141207.rar.t ... - madjeff, on 12/14/2007, -0/+9As a security professional, my feeling is if you don't know what Backtrack is by name, then you probably shouldn't mess with it... =)
- NoValidTitle, on 12/14/2007, -0/+8Backtrack submitted alongside WHAX? That's interesting considering Backtrack is the result of the WHAX and Auditor projects merging. Why don't you follow your own wishes my friend...
- rmccs0x, on 12/14/2007, -0/+8best live distro for security pro's hands down
- gvibe06, on 12/14/2007, -0/+7I am in 105% agreement with you. No matter how many peeps who have this for evil purposes, there are just as many of us Whitehats that have it to thwart any penetration attempts. Let the Games begin.
- LogicX, on 12/14/2007, -1/+7My FTP Mirror: ftp://rt:rt@mirror2.fpux.com/_BackTrack_3_Beta_ (thats user/pass: rt)
CD ISO: ftp://rt:rt@mirror2.fpux.com/_BackTrack_3_Beta_/bt3b141207.iso
USB ISO: ftp://rt:rt@mirror2.fpux.com/_BackTrack_3_Beta_/bt3b141207.rar
Also there - Checksums, and a rar test to show the rar is valid. - NoValidTitle, on 12/14/2007, -3/+9But apparently it doesn't teach you proper English.
- skold1, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5a changelog would be nice...
- travbrack, on 12/14/2007, -1/+5Pure sex
- computergod, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4Yeah, but this is a new, highly awaited version. It has built in injection patches for the wlan drivers, PXE booting, and a bunch of new programs.
- rmccs0x, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3I have installed this on one of my laptops and run it off the harddrive. great OS.
- oddworld19, on 12/14/2007, -2/+5Webster says:....valid word
- manitoba98xp, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3"libpurple"? That narrows it down to Adium, gaim, and a handful of other clients. But not the official client.
- Blaatmeister, on 12/14/2007, -0/+33/10. Too obvious.
- TinMan, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4Yeah, like those who use 'leetspeak' in the handles...
- psyjoniz, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3install the new one over it and tweak to your liking. or look at the differences in packages and upgrade them manually. personally, i would opt for neither as going 'beyond livecd' is stupid in this situation.
- francisew, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Why is it labeled USB/DVD?
Warning: the second file seems to ONLY cover the USB install. That poor label is a simple way to waste a lot of bandwidth as people then need to download the ISO. Then again, maybe new instructions will come along.
I quote from the USB install INSTALL.txt file:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
USB Install:
Copy the "boot" and "BT3" Directory to the root of your USB device.
Under Linux, change directory to the freshly copied /boot directory on the USB device.
MAKE sure your're in the "boot" directory on the USB device!
run ./boostinst.sh
unmount usb device.
Voila. - BOFH139, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Anybody got a working link to a non-corrupted copy of the USB install or any .par2 files that is not a torrent ; NTP anybody?
- wvdmc, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2It says right in the description that it's a security distro. ***** diggtard.
- alphanuderek, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2What's even funnier is that Muts, the guy who submitted this, is the creator of WHAX. Seriously, before you start calling out "n00bs" to "pwn" so you can show how "1337" you are (which is apparent from your use of numbers as letters and use of root in your name) know what you're talking about.
- Niloc, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Thanks seeding the ISO.
- rastakid, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Hahaha, dugg for the n3td3v troll :)
You gotta love obnoxious ignorant trolls in the morning. Especially when they think they know sh!t about security :) - simon275, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2lol n3td3v
Gotta love Remote Exploit.
I wouldn't worry about the downloads. Just wait a few days for some political controversy and everyone will move on. - computergod, on 12/14/2007, -2/+4According ethereal, there are emos lurking around here:

ugh i hate the world - papastout, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2It's just freakin sweet! Loaded up WITHOUT having to use the - BT no hotplug ACPI=off command
- smithpcrepair, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Auditor Tools (Later combined with WHAX) was my first real experience with a Linux distro. I have to thank the development team of this distro because it forced me to learn some basic xterm commands upfront. I remember the rush I'd get by "injecting packets" and watching the IV counter rise!
- implied, on 12/14/2007, -1/+3You rock0r. Here's my contribution -- NOT MY SERVER!
http://addis0n.com/bt/bt3b141207.iso - alphanuderek, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Almost done downloading both torrents, gonna be seeding as fast as Comcast will let a business customer seed! Thanks for all the hard work Mati, Max, and the rest of the Rexploit guys!
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1...oops...
- manitoba98xp, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1Ah, you're quite correct. It's Pidgin now, now gaim. (Duh). I used to use Pidgin, too. They renamed libgaim to libpurple at the same time as they changed from gaim to Pidgin, so it can't be gaim, but it can be Pidgin. Thanks.
- xqb4dpx, on 12/14/2007, -1/+2yeah part of those 15 year old hackers was me. i couldn't hack my damn neighbors wifi, so i just gave up ... but i download all the backtracks anyway
- Ob1masterjd26, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1Boy would I be pleased if they resolved that Mac double keying issue. Then my Mac could serve both my creative and hacking purposes. :)
- serasbach, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1Anyone know how I can upgrade an installed version of backtrack? Yes, I meant to say installed, I went beyond LiveCD
- rmccs0x, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1I took this course. Its GREAT! Highly recommended if you have the money..
- computergod, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1Wow, never seen a quad-dupe on digg before, might as well register a new account since this one is going to be on a lot of block lists.
- UlicBelouve, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1http://backtrack.offensive-security.com/index.php/ ...
That should help. Else, dig around in the forums. - papastout, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1like me
- brad76r, on 12/15/2007, -1/+2***** yeah... if I hadn't been such a ridiculous n00b all over the internets in my formative years I wouldn't be half the nerd I am today. Seriously. Give an idiot an ISO and see what happens. S/he'll probably end up learning alot about both linux and security, like I did.
- papastout, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Elitists don't want you to know more than they think they do
- 70ny70ny, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1Can't wait to try it with my Ubiquity card. V2 worked awesome. Always happy to donate $$$ to a new version. Please do so if you can at http://remote-exploit.org/. BTW... Anyone know if they created an "more" automatic HD installer?
- papastout, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1(nods) agreed!
- computergod, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1Considering the version, I think it's Pidgin since 2.2.0 is a recent version of it. But I don't know how they do the versions for Adium.
- psyjoniz, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1thank you remote-exploit. fantastic distro and i'm genuinely excited to know that it is still being maintained.
- geekmp3, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1Well said.
- ultra_lime, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1For someone just starting our anyone know any good podcast or tutorials for BackTrack?
- aatiis, on 03/16/2008, -0/+0As you said. Anyway, you can just add the mirrors as http/ftp seeds, most modern bittorrent clients support it...
