- brrrrbrrbrrra, on 02/24/2008, -9/+230Shouldn't the headline read "PeerGuardian blocks anti-virus update"?
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 02/24/2008, -12/+115I would rather get a computer virus than a court subpoena.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -1/+92But look how professional and mature Bluetack are according to this post from ESET:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=1188 ...
"We have reconsidered detection of PeerGuardian and it will be removed in the upcoming update. However, we will actively continue protecting our users from blacklists that contain the IP addresses (ranges) of our update servers and thus preventing our paying or trial users receiving updates and keeping their computers protected. We expected that we would resolve this problem on a professional level instead of the communication attempts of our attorney with Bluetack ISS being refused and their childish unproffesional action of banning access to their forum from ESET's IP." - LANjackal, on 02/24/2008, -22/+101PG isn't malware, but it isn't that useful either. I run NOD32 and if it comes down to running it or PG2, I'm gonna be choosing NOD without a second thought.
- johndi, on 02/24/2008, -11/+74PG2 allows you to white list IP addresses. If you don't want to do that you could close PG2, update NOD, and re-launch PG2. You don't have to choose.
- novask, on 02/24/2008, -7/+55It protects me from 1/3 of the Internet.
- hyaena, on 02/25/2008, -7/+51I don't blame ESET one bit. If a piece of software prevents my AV from updating properly, I'd call it malware too.
- say592, on 02/24/2008, -3/+36Dugg down because you are posting irrelevence.
We all know that the MPAA/RIAA is evil. You dont need to state it in a post that doesnt even mention them. - Gaulven, on 02/25/2008, -1/+34The answer is "yes" depending on how broadly you define "help."
In an attempt to gather evidence and troll for fresh targets for litigation, the __AA or people hired by them will join a torrent, connect to peers and attempt to download pieces of copyright material. If they are successful in downloading from someone, then they note the IP and the time. PeerGuardian blocks all traffic from a lot of popular addresses these companies use. Your risk is never zero because PeerGuardian is inherently out of date -- there's no way for it to be completely accurate. At the same time, it doesn't hurt to run it.
I'm not a lawyer, just an everyday jackass. - fkr3, on 02/24/2008, -9/+42You shouldn't have to do anything at all. The PG2 list should not include update servers for mainstream antivirus packages, regardless of the rhetoric ***** the list maintainers spew about commercial interests in [anything]. While it does it is entirely correct to classify it as malware and assist people in removing it.
- lcmatt, on 02/24/2008, -9/+42Nope NOD32 is the best AV software on the market. PG2 just gives you false security and isn't worth the hassle.
- inobla, on 02/24/2008, -0/+28Tell your brother to stop using Norton.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -2/+30Apparently he did not have NOD32, which is the best anti-virus I have seen so far (yes, it costs a few bucks but it is so damn worth it) (if you are on Windows and need an anti-virus that is).
- Akraz, on 02/25/2008, -2/+26NOD32 is probably one of THE best anti-virus programs out there.
- OverlordXenu, on 02/24/2008, -13/+36People still use PG/think it works?
- LembasBread, on 02/25/2008, -2/+25I'm a NOD32 user and I have been for some time now. After reading this, I don't see how ESET comes out to be the bad guy (see title of submisson).
ESET notices peer guardian blocking their anti-virus updates (pretty serious problem here)
ESET asks to be removed from black list and Bluetack refuses
To protect the integrity of their customer's machines, ESET blocks PG, allowing thier customers to update their anti-virus.
Where is the problem? They took all the logical steps. - alex7575, on 02/24/2008, -2/+24RTFA - Read The ***** Article
- ers35, on 02/24/2008, -19/+41Why use Peerguardian then? It doesn't protect you from anything.
- cbuddha42, on 02/25/2008, -1/+23Most definitely. PeerGuardian made the first move. Blocking AV updates is just stupid. Fine you saw the IP on a tracker, but figure out why and what else it's used for before you go blocking it. Considering that lots of viruses use similar methods (block AV updates) and that people expect nod32 to keep their system clean and itself up to date, I don't think ESET had much choice.
- freezervv, on 02/24/2008, -3/+24PG by default blacklists just about everything, but anti-vi update servers going on the list is a bit much.
- spudlyo, on 02/25/2008, -1/+21Software applications shouldn't be fighting on your desktop. This isn't Tron.
- windmillninja, on 02/24/2008, -1/+21RTFA!
- banmaster, on 02/25/2008, -2/+22Would you like fries with that elitism?
- inactive, on 02/25/2008, -2/+21I'm on a PC. Mine cost less and does more. Although, mine didnt come with the inflated sense of self importance.
- pepes, on 02/24/2008, -7/+26set nod32 to allow pg2.exe
- kansai22, on 02/24/2008, -0/+19People found out it was a virus itself.
- inactive, on 02/25/2008, -3/+21"As long as you don't run any exe's that you get from random places online, you'll be fine with just a firewall"
god i hope none of your friends take your security advice - thebellmaster1x, on 02/24/2008, -3/+21I can. It'd be the same as life now.
- scaaven2, on 02/25/2008, -2/+20.exe is just one method of delivery. there are many other ways.
- inactive, on 02/25/2008, -4/+22it does more good than harm. its low on resources and blocks millions of bad IP addresses from you. no reason not to use it, especially for file sharing.
- Celeron, on 02/24/2008, -3/+20"Childish unprofessional action"... ouch.
- xOKxWhy, on 02/24/2008, -6/+23What's next? The government banning tinfoil hats?
- LembasBread, on 02/25/2008, -0/+17But that wouldn't get diggs... *rolls eyes*
- RedHerringHack, on 02/24/2008, -0/+16It sucked itself into another universe.
- D3koy, on 02/24/2008, -10/+25well if a program is keeping another program for doing its job, I'd call it malware...I don't know why PG decided to call NOD32 anti-p2p, but I'm sure they had a reason. Bottom line: set NOD32 to allow PG and quit bitching...
- scabbers, on 02/24/2008, -11/+26For blocking the Chaos Computer Club, the PG/Bluetack boys have just proven they're jackasses who can't be trusted with my computer.
- ashura001, on 02/24/2008, -7/+21Stupid fights are stupid...
- kalel90, on 02/24/2008, -1/+15Some people are just stupid as hell.
- brasso, on 02/24/2008, -10/+23Good! If it stops the antivirus from working it is without any doubt malware.
- hexydes, on 02/25/2008, -0/+13This is the same idea as a bullet-proof vest. Will it guarantee that you can't get shot? No, it only protects the chest and the area immediately around the chest. You could still get hit in the arms, legs, or even the head.
That said, if you are wandering out into a battle zone, would you rather do so with, or without a bullet-proof vest? It isn't about making you bullet-proof, it is about making you a smaller target to the hundreds of bullets whizzing around in the general area. You might still get hit, but certainly, your chances are at least diminished to some degree. And that's the same idea behind PeerGuardian. - shredswithpiks, on 02/25/2008, -3/+16are you some kind of idiot?
- noumuon, on 02/25/2008, -1/+13it's amazing how stupid people like you can really be.
- KnightMareInc, on 02/24/2008, -6/+17it may not be malware but its clearly crapware.
- chaosium, on 02/25/2008, -2/+12They are looking out for their customers, unlike PG which has no such responsibilities.
- N256, on 02/24/2008, -2/+12You do that.
- MillionsLivio, on 02/25/2008, -1/+11Firstly, you are acting very immature and arrogant. Secondly, no one is going to take anything you serious remotely seriously when your name is AppleMacMan and you have Mac icon as your avatar. You are a fanboy, thus nobody cares what you think.
- MillionsLivio, on 02/25/2008, -0/+10And nobody gives a *****.
- OverlordXenu, on 02/25/2008, -5/+15Arrogant Macfag.
- DarkDx, on 02/24/2008, -12/+21Who needs Peerguardian anyway? Just download Heroes.s01e05-xor.avi instead of heroes.s01e05-secret.screener.rar
- Ryan0617, on 02/24/2008, -8/+17I have NOD32, ppl should stop being so trivial and look out for the customers.
