- Sparragus, on 10/10/2007, -11/+192Gimp better than Photoshop? My ass.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+39Why is this on a dating site?
- joshjoneswas, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39You mean I can purchase a web browser?!
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3194 Free Software Applications that are Better than Purchased Ones.
It doesn't say GIMP is better than any other free program, the title says better than puchased programs too. - Nick22, on 10/10/2007, -6/+31Main thing IMO that photoshop has over gimp - the interface. The entire UI is soooo much better than GIMP. Besides, as long as you dont have any issues with pirating, photoshop is free :)
- BrokenCircle, on 10/10/2007, -7/+31If Gimp is on this list I swear to God I am going to bury it.
- maxadim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25Google cache got it:
http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:dD0-mf_3bOsJ:www.notablinddate.com/member/7/blog/page2/index165.html - mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -5/+29This is more like a list of Windows based freeware with "best" added before them ..
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -5/+25.. and inaccurate.
For example, while Filezilla and SmartFTP (GUI hell) are both okay neither of them are as good as FlashFXP, same with GIMP and Photoshop, and than for some others are there even comparable apps you have to pay for like the GMail one? But there were some good finds like dBpoweramp. - jiub, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Open Office is great for simple word processing/spread sheets but isn't even in the same league as MSOffice (especially the Powerpoint program).
- ddxChrist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16And that's where we lose the mainstream. We argue terms and semantics whereas the general public associates "free" with a product free of charge. Very few people care about "free as in freedom"; just look at modern politics. Rights are easily eroded, but people certainly take notice of prices.
I'm all for Free Software in its proper sense, but I definitely know that's not how the term will actually be perceived. The fact that people have to be informed of what it actually means is rather telling. - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18It's only "usually" used that way among F/LOSS people. Most others equate "free" to "...of charge".
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11"Main thing IMO that photoshop has over gimp - the interface."
...and text handling...and layer handling...and styles...and resizable brushes...and easy to install and use plugins...and prepress support...and custom shapes and basic vector support...and...and...and... - DarkDx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10You're are using an "browser" that is basically layer in top of internet explorer. Congratulations
- electrichead, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17A similar list, but with way better descriptions and reasons why they are better can be found at http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm . He also has a further list if you sign up for the newsletter. Well worth the visit, I think.
- alacrity2005, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Only someone who doesn't REALLY understand everything that Photoshop does would ever say that Gimp or any alternate image editor is better than photoshop. Cheaper, easier for a novice, quicker on slow machines... I'll give you those. But not better at what it's designed to do which is edit images. I've had this argument dozens of times with wanna be photographers who are coasting by on a cheaper/free editor, and it never fails... the second they get serious, they move to Photoshop. It's just far and away the best there is.
- freehunter, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17It didn't say "open source", it said free. Free used to have a very different meaning, see, when I was a kid, free software/games/most anything meant "you don't have to pay for it". My software is not a prisoner in my computer, it couldn't care less if it is open source, and I don't care one bit about altering the source. Free is free, it doesn't always have to be more than that.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11There's also the question of what counts as "free" - quite a few of these *can* cost you money (if you really want to), and likewise, quite a few of them exist in categories where *all* software is free... Both kind of make the whole "better than purchased" slant of it either highly fudgable or completely redundant.
It's by no means a bad list, but the description is quite inaccurate. - Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -10/+19GIMP is not better than Photoshop, although it is just as good in many ways. GIMP will do just everything you need it to do unless you need to send stuff to a printshop for printing. I don't believe that GIMP does CMYK, but I haven't kept up. It's entirely possible that it does now.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13great list,
although i'd have listed comodo firewall as well as zone alarm :) - danomagnum, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10What? No 3dmailbox in the mail apps?
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9No kidding. This list pretty much puts years of me poking around the internet on one page.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I had pretty low expectations when I followed the link, and when the title bar lit up with "find singles in your area" I thought it was a done deal... But it turned out to be a really neat collection of software. Dugg. Definitely dugg.
- tavisjohn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9There is a flaw on the list. Getright is NOT free...
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Until you disable skins.
- lfernandez91, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Guess you buried it then...
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9It takes no effort to leave a comment. Don't blow it out of proportion.
- Fraff5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Quit while you're behind.
- heavyd14, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8And what about Avast AV?
- tropican8, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8K-lite is not a codec pack you want to be installing. It can cause many serious system problems. Here's more information:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/chrisl/archive/2004/07/04/9546.aspx
If you want some statistics, it adds 1330 keys and 805 values to the registry. - eean, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13Buried for misusing the term "Free Software". At least lowercase the free if you only mean it in the beer usage...
- cfuse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Since when does uglier mean better?
I'm so sick of GIMP apologists - the UI for your application turns an OK program into a steaming pile of turd. Stop telling us that it's better and fix that wreck. - mikewhite314, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6you might like Gaim for your PC, it's what Adium is based on.
- xpose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Link didnt work when I went to it. Here is the google cached page.
http://tinyurl.com/35pecb - refreshthis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8If Shareaza was truly "multi-platform," wouldn't it be available on multiple platforms?
- colto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Were resizeable brushes ever implemented? That's a huge feature that I couldn't believe wasn't in there when I first tried it.
- PRlME, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7yep classic Linux fan boy. Nice.
- buryyourhead, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I haven't had a problem with it
- Vizin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6"Free Software" doesn't have to mean OSS; by definition it means free of charge. It was capitalized because it was part of the article title.
I support OSS as much as the next Digger, but we can be a little nutty about this sometimes. - mysticpain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5freeware lists are getting very very old.
- Nick22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Agreed. Seriously "Best AIM Virus Remover"? What kind of category is that?
- FuzzyC, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You do realize that "freeware" is a contraction of "free software" ... right?
Oh but that's not important, because everyone knows that "free _______" is about the purity of _______ and not the financial status associated with it.
Jesus Christ. - Theipolicy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Never bothered my computer. In fact, I like it.
- eean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4videolan
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -14/+17Why is everyone hammering zenlunatic? He is right. You are the ones in the wrong.
The title clearly states "Free Software". When the term "Free Software" is used in that way it usually means Free as in freedom, not price.
Software that is not free as in freedom, but in price is called FREEWARE, not "Free Software" (Free Software is a term, damnit!). If you can't comprehend it from me, perhaps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software will help you. Then again, by the sounds of it most of you are to ignorant to understand why Free Software exists. - bradleyland, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Piss off. The FSF has no more right to highjack the term "free software" than Microsoft or any other nemesis of choice.
You want free as in freedom? Call it freedom software. - MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Some of these are very useful.
- arcooke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I still have an old Netscape Navigator box in my closet from the 90's. Its fun to read. They hype up the fact that you can view pictures on websites. I think the minimum requirements included a 386 processor.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The title implies that it is. It is saying that Gimp is a free software application that is better than any purchased program. Photoshop falls under the "must pay for" category, so therefore, that is why Sparragus said makes sense.
- ibuprofane, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Who actually pays for a Bittorrent client??
