- t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9While at work I write every email and IM with the assumption that I am being watched. o_O
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ok... with the government reading my e-mail and the company I work for reading my e-mail, is it any wonder I don't read my e-mail?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm actually shocked this number isn't higher. Having been the person designated to spy on employees (aka, look for porn), I really see the importance of catching the slackers.
A typical day in the life of a spy...
Uncover some porn on a person's browser cache, and examine photos to ensure it wasn't just a popup or something. Meanwhile, someone walks into your cubicle...
Hey man, how's it.... uh... I'll come back later...
WAIT! IT'S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE! THAT'S NOT MY GAY PORN! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2004/20041029h.jpg
Not really. Normal employees just play games and find other ways to slack off. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I had a coworker that ***** used P2P at work to download music, the admin (and others I'm sure) knew about it but turned a blind eye to it. Then there was also another person that got fired just for browsing the web during lunch. I never dared to use email or internet access for anything except work and they were definitely snooping around for any little excuse...
Gotta love selective enforcement, eh? - moylan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3easy to solve, i had my bosses account set up as the postmaster for our domain. 6000 emails a day keeps him busy! its great when he comes back from holidays and spends days trying to catch up.
- daub815, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I understand reading email that is being sent with a company's email account because its the company's. As for web based mail, I hope not at my company. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am the porno company... if I stopped looking at porn during work hours, nothing would get done! :D
- simp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No problem. I encode my emails and post them on Craigslist.

- rfid4dna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are they looking for slackers or people trying to defraud the company?
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just use web mail
- Tyrekicker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ssh tunnels anyone?
http://digg.com/technology/Employers_crackdown_on_surfing_at_work.#c1766087 - darkclarity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never send personal email via company addresses/systems - not just because they might be spying on it, I simply don't want friends to learn an email address for a place I may leave in the future. In the case of my last place the standard practice was to forward all emails sent to former employees to the company owner.
- OptimismPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is 3 little letters to prevent the company from reading your mail....well, more like 2 letters, in 2 different combinations of 3 letter acronyms.
PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), or the 100% open source and compatible alternative GPG => Gnu PG => Gnu Privacy Guard.
Just go for a max 4096 bit key, and encrypt your Mail..... - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's nice being the only one who (knows how/has access to) to use the mail server....
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gotta love working at home.
- elamr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DoD employees are not worried about that.
- Trueblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It all depends what's being monitoring _for_.
We monitor all of our outbound traffic, but we're only looking for known viruses/worms/etc. I guess, strictly speaking, we "read" employee email in the same sense we monitor IM traffic, via an automated system looking for really specific patterns. - DasAmigo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah it's true I was fired one time for sending mail back and forth with a good friend crcking jokes. At one point he said somthing I forget what, but my reply was somthing along the lines of "don't make me hack your email" etc and 2 days later Iwas in hot water and they told me they were reading my emails.
- judsond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And ssl encrypted web mail should protect you there unless someone is very determined.
- cecil_t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except that if YOU have PGP you can only digitally sign your message, not encrypt it. The person you're sending mail to must also have PGP to encrypt it. (or S/MIME which is my preference).
- ikiryou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The fact that 33% of American employers can read at all is surprising enough....
- dvdd127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am not all that surprised about this... but I sure do hope that they at least tell their employees that they will read their email.... because else they can get im BIG trouble
- iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ha ha .. this is so great.. it always amazes me how fast people actually work around here where i work when i put the key words in my mails that trigger the flags.. lol
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1exactly, I saw this headline and thought "wow...only 33%!?!"
- Nir0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love people who think they can get around this somehow...those are actually the people that end up getting in to the most trouble.
- G33k0ft3chz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This I think should be higher..Since many companies pretty much take everything you do.. You clicked on that 3 times..You went to ______ 5 times..Stuff like that. No since the Nsa is Listening to our Phone calls and our companies Looking at your Email and Im's Whats next? The FBI looking at your every move?
Eh...When I wasn't Self Employed My Emails were looked at..But You know what? I only got like 3 a day! HAHAHa
I just wasn't worried Because I knew I didn't Get any bad emails... - zdriver69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok. I am a little new at this but what about the recent comment above. Is it 'safe' to use web mail and not get 'snooped on'?? Can they keep track of what you type on web mail? I know they can track sites. That isn't an issue with me.
I know about internal company issues and don't ever use company email for personal notes. - pmpc00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The main reason companies do this is because they need to comply with NASD or SEC regulations which means that for example, Stock Brokers are not allowed to say various things to their customers. The company needs to check a specific % of their entire email flow with compliance officers to ensure they are in compliance. Other instances of this would be HR departments doing investigations against all emails sent (internal and external to the company) for explicit content, things that could be a potential sexual harassment suit.
For the most part the company will not tell their employees that people are monitoring the mail flow, as it's not their responsibility to do so, they "own" the mail that travels on their network and mailserver.
...In case you are wondering i work on consulting companies on how to do this in their environment - jfranche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Companies can monitor both their own mail system, as well as webmail reading and posting - down to specific messages.
- Dunadan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wait you mean you get paid to look at pr0n?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Do you get your company to set up a voip account, or do you do that on your own dime?
- pmpc00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, they don't have to tell you, and in most cases they won't tell you. And you can't do anything about it. Remember, they own the network, the computer, the email server, the domain, etc. etc. So they can do whatever they want.
The short answer is to use a gmail account or some other email address for non-work related emails. - pendetim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could the company's E-mail "readers" also take time to do a quick spell check in case I missed anything?
