Despite your best efforts, you may still become a victim. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Shield your card. Think how many people these days carry around camera phones -- and think how easy it would be to snap a picture of your card if it were left in plain view.

That's odd, because Visa's Webpage says EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE.
http://usa.visa.com/business/accepting_visa/ops_risk_management/card_present.html
We have to remind our stores to enforce this all the time.
Unsigned cards cannot be accepted under any circumstances. Period. If the card says "See ID" or similar, then it is UNSIGNED. According to our contractual obligations, we must verify the identity of the person with the card and then watch them SIGN THE CARD. Refusal to sign the card means we can not accept it.
And yes, Visa/Mastercard does do tests of things like that. If we are found to not be in compliance, we get a fine or lose the ability to accept Visa/MC credit cards.
See ID is not valid and anybody who accepts it is breaking their contracts. - Ravi_Mishra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get help if you need it. Resources like the Identity Theft Resource Center offer tools and advice for dealing with persistent credit card fraud problems.
- jcall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm rarely asked for my ID as well - - I've even had the experience of a clerk noting that writing "see photo id" was a good idea. She then handed me my card, without having asked for my ID.
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am with micromause, a signature is worthless, and even the bank says that it doesnt void the card. And I agree with his personality assessment of brandonhines as well... :P
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thank God they didn't put "Write See ID". That pretty much voids the card. Go ahead, read the back. "Not Valid Unless Signed". I turn down a lot of people because their cards are like that.
- 5had0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have signed the back with a pen and the wrote Please ask for ID over the signature. That way its still valid. When my wallet was lost and then found i was only missing some cash and the one card that didnt have please ask for id.
- blindfaith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good read, i think everyone with a credit card should read this ... makes some good points

- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reason #1: Don't get a credit card.
- Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good common sense opinions. Nothing ground-breaking.
Also, if your card is signed, the cashier typically won't ask for id. If you write something else there, then they think twice and ask for it.
Without lying to yourself, how many times has a cashier asked you for your id? Probably not enough to be confident. Maybe it depends on where you live.. - RubyJewelStone, on 03/10/2009, -0/+0So true, which is why I like my Bank of America card. And it is effective since the majority of theives are really just looking for the quick way.
- Solsa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WRITE "ASK FOR ID" on the back after you sign it, so both are readable. I sign my name in Red ink and write over it in black. I have a long last name, the best way to do it though is side by side. As for merchants turning down a card signed like that, buy your stuff somewhere else and call the card company, they'll get in trouble for turning it down. In college and after I rang up sales and became manager so I know there is nothing wrong with a costumer that wants to protect their credit.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What kind of crap is this? The most effective method I have ever seen is to simply include a small picture of the cardholder ON the card.
In these cases it is very easy to see that this person is not the cardholder.
"Mam, is this your husband (on the card)?" Yes. "I'll need him to sign."
A picture credit card, with signature on back, is the best I've seen in wide usage as a method for proventing unotherized use. I would guess it would make it worth less to the theif too, because they (might) have to print out a sticker of their mug to replace yours (more work). - thehig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>Incidentally, what do you do if they have BOTH "see photo id" AND their >>signature?
Which is what I do. But it is a rare clerk that asks for my id. But I always thank them politely when they do. - jcall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@brandonhines:

Incidentally, what do you do if they have BOTH "see photo id" AND their signature? - wolf530, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please. This is all so obvious, if you don't know 90% of this out of good common sense, you really shouldn't be using the internet because you've probably already been duped.
- andrew_m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not coming up for me, damn digg effect.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I feel sorry for people whose identities are stolen. But I couldn't care less if those people are too dumb to realize how to guard their personal info :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a set of software pirates called Carders, dedicated to steal credit card information, and use it to purchase softwares.
>>>> - aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any mark made by you can be your signature. Therefore "See ID" is my signature.
Anyway, as someone who has worked in a retail location that has approximately 10 to 20 $2,000 and up sales a day (plus a bunch of smaller ones), I check ID for everyone. Your credit card company may only require a signature as a valid form of ID, but the store I worked at did not. Some customers would get upset, but they were in the very small minority. Most people were happy to show ID to complete their purchase.
And after 3 years, only 1 case of a stolen credit card, and with the security cameras we determined it was a fake ID presented with the stolen credit card. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a set of pirates called Carders, dedicated to steal credit card information, and use it to purchase softwares.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To protect yourself review your bill every month.
As for the credit card companys ***** them.
There not here to help you there here to take your cash. - Whomever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@brandonhines: Some financial institutions recommend writing "Check ID" NEXT to your signature. If you don't sign the card, you give up your protection rights from the CC processor.

- Duston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is why I don't use Credit Cards, debit cards are the way to go.
- 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zbeast has it.
Review your bill. Keep an eye on your card activity.
All this stuff about asking for ID and stuff.. if my card is used fraudulently, that's between the merchant and Visa, NOT me. My contract with the card clearly says so, and in fact, the reason I use it in the first place is because it provides me with a level of protection.
If you can't prove I authorized the transaction, I don't pay.. period. - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Thank God they didn't put 'Write See ID'"
What if my name IS Write Seeid? I guess I won't go through your check-out line.
Just out of curiosity, why bother to repeat some of the points in comments? How is that better than just clicking on the link and reading? - Ravi_Mishra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0arrogant replies micromause
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0some people will never comply, and besides sometimes clerks don't check for ID anyways
