- photomatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Hey just to clarify, WordPress is an independent project that releases on its own. Automattic is a company which has several employees that contribute a lot to WP, but WordPress is the result of hundreds if not thousands of talented contributors, including several dozen just for this release. That's what makes it "free and priceless at the same time." :)
- inflammable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I'd just like to take this opportunity to say how much WordPress rocks. If you've never used it before, definitely check it out.
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11chrono,
There is a wp-cache plugin that is trivial to setup (you install the plugin and you're one click away from it being enabled... installing the plugin itself is quite literally as easy as downloading it)... and this cache plugin will allow even very "weak" systems to withstand a ridiculously high load (in comparison to what it could normally withstand). People can get it here: http://mnm.uib.es/gallir/wp-cache-2/ - superKduper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Automattic released it's new version..."
Please don't destroy English. - MarkJaquith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Diff, changed files Zip, changed files list -- as predicted. :-)

- dbxz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8me too! its the best blogging platform out there!
oh and heres whats new in 2.0.6
* Security fixes.
* HTML quicktags now work in Safari browsers.
* Comments are filtered to prevent them from messing up your blog layout.
* Compatibility with PHP/FastCGI setups. - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7WordPress seems okay but man whenever a site that is running it gets dugg the site just drops dead. Anyone know if that's a WP issue or what?
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The fact that you can even see the WP error logo shows it's NOT Wordpress. The problem is the underlying DATABASE server, which usually can't take all the connections. Larger blogs hosted on WP (like TechCrunch) usually don't have this problem since they have better database servers
Arguably though, this is a problem with WP (for not optimizing/caching results). It is possible to set up WP to cache database calls using a plugin that ships with the program, but most users don't enable it because they don't need it. - shinda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's almost as if you're holding wordpress in a negative light for being popular. Having used it for some time now and having compared to some of the alternatives I can't see any other blog software staking up against it (keyword being blog). It's blog software first and only recently with the addition of pages has it dipped its toe into the world of CMS's.
But honestly, how can you blame something for being popular or feeling trapped under its weight. No one is making you use it, instead because of its ease of use, you CHOOSE to use it. Just like Linux users feel they are more product in Linux and Windows users feel they're more productive in Windows. End of the day if it gets the job done, and does it right then you set. Unlike windows though you can actually contribute and work on solving the problems that exist around it.
But thats just my take on it. Good day. - photomatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It all depends on the quality of the hosting, mostly the database. Sometimes WordPress.com will get 2-3 front page diggs a day, it doesn't even make a blip.
- lippe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pretty sure that it is just the hosting that they are using. I know that I use WordPress on my private server that has only about 5gb bandwidth for a month. If I got dugg to front page, I imagine it would die pretty fast with everyone viewing it.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Never used it before, but maybe someone can answer a question.
Wordpress has received a bit of a negative image of going down quickly under higher loads. Is this like Plone (which I have used) in that "out of the box" it is not optimized for heavy or even moderate loads (debug vs. production mode).
My question is this: Is Wordpress inherently unable to sustain heavy loads or is it the fault of the admin who failed to set it up properly? - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3one of the key updates is that quicktags now work in Safari
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Excellent, new Wordpress. Does it come with a Digg shield yet?
- kasted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wordpress just totally owns
- MarkJaquith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32.1 is coming out soon, with more than a year's worth of development. Stay tuned.
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's what I set our local radio station up with. I have a WordPress blog running as a CMS that will update their homepage via an rss to html script with the news stories. It works smooth for both the radio station and the visitors.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Is Wordpress inherently unable to sustain heavy loads or is it the fault of the admin who failed to set it up properly?"
WordPress is designed to work for everyone. No matter how lousy their web host is. So it's written for the lowest common denominator. Fortunately it's also designed so that -- in the right hands -- it can be tweaked to increase performance. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can probably resolve this manually if you have problems with the ZIP file/s.
http://neosmart.net/blog/archives/317 - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2emerge wordpress
Oh yeah. - econofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone else have trouble unzipping Mark's zips? I get CRC errors all over the place.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would say you were spamming, but you don't really have anything on your site :D
- MarkJaquith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My take, and a fix in numerous forms (diff, patched file, description of how to manually fix):
http://markjaquith.wordpress.com/2007/01/06/wordpress-206-feedburner-issue-and-fix/ - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wordpress is the shizznick. I have been using it for about 2 years and am still using it to this day. I like it because you can customize it to act as a cms, whilst avoiding the "bloggy" look.
- zmx32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are important security fixes.
The first vulnerability is an XSS (Cross Site Scripting) hole in WordPress's own CSRF protection.
And the second vulnerability is a very interesting SQL injection. Very interesting, because it abuses charset conversion support to bypass the database escaping routines. Our demo exploit uses UTF-7.
Both vulnerabilities have the potential to compromise the admin account, which in case of WordPress might allow arbitrary PHP code execution due to WordPress features.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just updated earlier today, I am so glad support for HTML Tagging via the toolbar is supported under Safari.
- darkfate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not sure if I should have posted this in another topic. I'm assuming that Mark is going to make the changed files like he did for the last two releases. Just give him a while.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The issue would happen with any CMS. Too many SQL queries on a small server = all CPU usage used. Solution: Static content AKA Wp-Cache 2.0
- raianoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3WordPress is the best blogging platform out there! Thanks for yet another great release.
- kelson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If anyone has problems with feeds appearing blank after this upgrade, the solution is here: http://www.hyperborea.org/journal/archives/2007/01/05/feed-problems/
- entity1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The way I've updated my wordpress system:
cd /root
wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz
tar xfz latest.tar.gz
rsync -va /root/wordpress/ /usr/share/wordpress/
rm -rf /root/wordpress
rm latest.tar.gz
Custom layouts (not default and classic) in the themes directory and backups will not be removed. - Viper007Bond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not all that hard to make a very simple blog posting software of your own. But the keyword there is "very simple". To make something as full featured as WordPress would take you _ages_.
And why re-invent the wheel anyway? - MarkJaquith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WordPress is dynamic, so the bottleneck could be MySQL, PHP, RAM or CPU. Properly set up with an output cache like WP-Cache2, WordPress can handle hundreds of page views per second. Most people don't need anything close to that kind of throughput. That being said, Matt and I have both expressed interest in getting some sort of caching moved into WP core for 2.2 or beyond. It'd be swell if even a poorly configured server running stock WordPress could handle the Digg effect.
- zmx32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some more details

- zmx32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Boo. Where is your brain?
- vzxyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm relatively new to the wordpress community but I still absolutely love it. It's easy to setup and even a noob can run it without any problems. There are many other free blogging platforms out there, but owing to popularity and ease of use, I choose wordpress and I do not regret that I did. Wordpress Rocks!!!
Eagerly awaiting the 2.1 release - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The difference between a small security fix and a large one is whether your site gets hacked. Install it. It took 10 minutes, and 9:45 of that time was spent backing up my directories.
- joetan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WordPress is really a great platform, not only for blog sites, but it can also be used for more general non-bloggy websites... and I've done some work in that regard via a series of custom plugins and template modifications. And, I just recently wrote on my blog about some of the mods I did (breadcrumbs, drop down menus, custom sidebars):
http://tantannoodles.com/2006/12/19/customizing-wordpress-templates/ - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My web host doesn't allow shell access (unless I upgrade to "business") so I just backed up my blog directories via FTP, backed up my databases via PHPmyAdmin, disabled my plugins, downloaded and unzipped the new install source, uploaded and overwrote my old files via FTP, ran upgrade.php, and re-enabled my plugins. Easy easy and the backups thankfully were not necessary!
- ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes it's worth it, there are security fixes, and the upgrade process is usually trivial (because the plugin and theme systems keep user changes outside of the core code).
- andy206uk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bastards! I just updated to 2.05 yesterday (I had left it too long to update and thought I should pull my finger out. Now I gotta do it all again!).
Still, Wordpress rocks - it'll be worth the effort! Keep up the good work guys! - kitta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Wordpress since it's first release, 0.70 I think it was, back then MT was king and WP was just learning to swim. It's come a long way since then and I'm eagerly awaiting the release of 2.1.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; Wordpress is sexy. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recently switched from Blogger to WordPress and overall I am very pleased with my decision, even despite the fact that I suddenly have to pay for a web host and domain. Blogger started off good but it has really fallen behind the times.
However, thomasprebble has a very valid point and I dugg him up. There are some weird idiosyncrasies in WordPress that really punish people who know their code. For example, the WYSIWYG editor seems to strip extraneous BR and P tags so that you can make double carriage returns even if you want to. Editing the HTML instead doesn't always solve the problem either, but sometimes it does. Also, it seems to arbitrarily change P to BR so that there is a double space between some paragraphs and a single space between others. A "finished" blog entry often needs double and triple checks to ensure the formatting is correct.
Otherwise, between the interface, features, and extensibility, WordPress is the perfect balance of ease-of-use and power. Blogger has a lot of catching up to do. I'm very disappointed that a company as huge and smart as Google is so slow at innovating this platform. - Yardsale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it worth it to upgrade?
- Dajad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know if this release solves the "Uncategorized" problem. They promised a few months ago that a future release would no longer require at least one category to be checked. This drives me crazy, day in and day out. It's the only thing I want from WordPress. Otherwise I'm happy with my current version.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I have a love-hate relationship with WordPress. I really don't have a choice but to use it. Any plugin/module worth a damn has been written for WP. Any decent theme that's been created, has been created for WP. In a sense, WP has become the Windows of blogging platforms. Better alternatives may exist, but it's impossible to switch.
I write WP plugins myself. Not because I absolutely love WP, but because it's the CMS that everyone is using. And everyone is using it because everyone else is using it. It's just one of those things. If I want to reach the widest audience possible, I have to create my plugins for WordPress. Yep.. sounds exactly like Windows. - LightsOut06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hey php programmers and html developers. How hard is it to design your own blog from scratch? Why does everyone want to use wordpress or blogger? Can someone clear this question up for me? thanks.
- GenericUser2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love Wordpress.
