- saggygrandma, on 10/11/2007, -9/+76AN SERVER ON AN USB?
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44This guy apparently dropped English for Computer Programming in high school.
- jackpot, on 10/11/2007, -7/+47Preceding an acronym starting with a "U", it sounds better to use "a" instead of "an", but is it right? or does it even matter?
- DeathJux, on 10/11/2007, -10/+48It's not the letter, it's the sound. The "U" in "USB" is pronounced "yoo," making the "an" inappropriate.
- PsychoticClown, on 10/11/2007, -5/+42Not to nitpick, but whether using the full word or just the USB acronym, it should be "a USB" not "an".
- emmanuelsotelo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35Nice, but XAMPP has been around for longer and has more features.
http://www.portableapps.com/apps/development/xampp - fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31Aren't the "here's a mirror" jokes pointing to a photo/drawing/whatever of a mirror getting old yet?
http://portableapps.com/ has lots of stuff you can stick on a USB stick. - nipuL, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31I agree with deathjux.
I go by the sound when using a/an

... - ocauTMM, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Now i can host my own dodgy porn site where ever i go, brilliant!
- atbnet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Seems like this server is being hosted on a USB stick...
- dcmjzero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16"a" is right, like "a union"
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/esl/esliart.html - expert01, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14If you're saying umbrella, then you should say "an umbrella". If you're saying yak, you should say "a yak".
- stephenwq, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11PortableApps is a great site, however XAMPP isn't actually hosted there - that page just links to the official one.
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html#641 - JoshuaH, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I don't know about the being in someones ass part, but this has been done before.
- anagoge, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Now there's an idea.
- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yep, XAMPP has been there, as a matter of fact about 5 USB-stick XAMPP servers should have recently returned from extended duty serving up elearning on a ship in the Gulf of Mexico. I'm waiting to hear how my babies did.
- drewjoh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I wonder if his server is running on a stick....
- jubilee123, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8A USB stick, not AN
- catfive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dumbest comment ever.
- LosingTheFight, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@Yarnage
WTF are you talking about? XAMPP charges nothing.... ever.
I've used them for years, both for development and live hosting, both personal and professionally, and have NEVER paid a dime...
Sounds like someone is ripping you off. - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6@ricola
You agree with deathjux and nipuL! - zeno60, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7@jdwtc
Its even funnier the 80th time someone does it!!! - expert01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Well... Apache or Lightty, PHP, MySQL... this is not a hard thing to make. Hell, I have An Apache/PHP/MySQL at a 3.5MB download (12MB unpacked), and Lighty/PHP/MySQL at a 7MB download (24.5MB unpacked). And that's with all the necessary extensions. Works out of the box, just have to extract it.
- bryceman111, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Looks like someone pulled out the flash drive this site is being run from.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The article must be running off of one...

- Radionesiac, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5....an??
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3All the guys at Best Buy told me its "UBS," which I think stands for "Universal Bus for Stuff."
- spankaccount, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's a USB stick. An USB stick is wrong and sounds bad to boot.
- DiggCommando, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Useful for guerrilla web propaganda in places like China? Just a thought.
- Eggman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@Erectile (#7239872)
an hero - neoform, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6Firs thought that comes to mind is.. "How amazingly useful!"
- pgoowy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For just sharing files HFS is much better: http://rejetto.com/hfs/
- nipuL, on 10/11/2007, -8/+9im in ur usbz, serving ur webz
- dafragsta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Is it just me or is the rule of "a" and "an" more attached to the phonetic sound of the first syllable rather than the actual first letter? To me, saying "an USB" sounds so wrong compared to saying "a USB" because the U is pronounced as the literal letter which has that sometimes-Y-except-not-this-time sound?
- thinman1189, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Looks great. Portable Apps is great too, so hard to decide...
- h0dg3s, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Too bad they don't mention that it's completely useless unless you have access to open ports on someone else's network.
- g3r4, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yeah, digg's already covered this. A LONG time ago. Hell, I didn't even search digg to find that out, I searched google for "Portable Web Server". It was the second result...

Nice of you to actually make sure that this was news. - jzurawski, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Here are a couple of more links to similar packages for web servers on USB's.

(click the No,take me to the download button.)

Also, awhile back I wrote a blog entry on how to set up a home web server using these packages and dynamic dns services for a class I was taking.
If you want to take a look.....
http://jzurawski.blogspot.com/ - Torv, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Put Squeak on a stick, same thing
- Erectile, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3An what?
- Aciid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1You should learn English as indeedz.

- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1an USB?
- unruled, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1this is a great Http server: http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/
and it requires no installation either, its just a single .exe file. Has quite advanced, yet simple options too. - jlebrech, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I have XAMPP on my stick! works perfectly well.
But end of the day nothing can beat ftp access to my home server.
Handy for doing consultation work, tho to have it on a stick. - leo_schrauwen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0you can find the digg story for the program jzurawski is referring to on
http://digg.com/mods/Apache_Mobile_-_A_web_server_on_your_USB_drive
maybe we should digg that story (is from 9/23/2005 already) - joll200x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Hmm, i seem to remember this not being that great (feel free to correct me, was a while ago i used it)
I prefer HFS webserver. much simpler and runs really quickly. I use it for performing tests through firewalls -
