- myrmidon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here's the catch: you don't put tags around something that's already italicized -- you put tags around something to make it italicized.
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Of course those are deprecated.
- yonas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That tag is deprecated.
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Umm...yeah, that is lame.
- ohhsnap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Geek....or basic knowledge of the Internet?
- gnomeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't understand. Why are letters than lean called italic? What does the Leaning Tower of Pizza-Land have to do with the origin of italics?
- LosingTheFight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, not to "ruin" the joke, but shouldn't it be < em > ?
- geordiedan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3He wasn't explaining the joke. He was trying to make another joke ie. italic is named after Italy where the Leaning Tower of Pisa resides.
- fatbobsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not particularly silly, is it.
- csfreakazoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1original content is here

It looks like the page is driven by WordPress. That requires a lot of database queries just to display a single page. WordPress can't survive a digg without caching. Looks like he uses caching now, so he probably found it out. :-) - obrienslalom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1although you would normally see the same results using emphasis, it isn't always the case. Look into how you can change the meaning of this tag and you'll see that sometimes you can make it appear a different size, underlined, etc. Italics should always mean just that, italics.
- smokinguns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if the structure is bent, then the italic tag is already applied to it ( supposing the structure is already in correct state).
So why add another & ? . Grr !!. Got ya - MissCellania, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It wasn't this item that hosed the site, it was another: http://digg.com/search?section=news&s=Photographs+that+changed+the+world Neatorama often has several digg bursts in one day. And < em > wouldn't be Italian enough. < i > may be deprecated, but it works on most platforms.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0how does that happen? these are just plain html and images.
my website, running off a crappy 300mhz with 256MB of RAM survived being slashdotted, dugg to the front page, posted on reddit, and featured on engadget in the _same day_. and it only had problems in the first 10 minutes of slashdotting and was fine after that. - 47knight, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5For those who don't know, the tags are used to italicize text.
