- Veritas77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You people are missing the point. Where the hell is the rest of the very first demo image?!?!!11 :D

Working on it. Have the basic class implemented and am working on the load procedure (procedure as in process by which it happens, not as in a type of function).
So far, 1) the images are displayed if JS is not enabled, 2) the images are just img tags inside a properly classed div tag
I intend to exactly implement Jon's design (with a caveat or two; images classed 'rightnav' and 'leftnav' will be the navigation buttons, and an image classed 'background' will be the background of the heads-up display) This way, you can skin it easily. - riklomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4According to The Counter's sample of 22 million, 6% have Javascript turned off.
http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2006/September/javas.php - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What are the metrics on % of users without js running these days? Anyone know?
- starheinz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice to see development based on the moo libraries - these are shaping up to be a nice, usable and really lightweight alternatives to the heavyweight stuff like scriptaculous.

225k is with all the docs and example images... Most of it is used by images in the slideshow.
JS, CSS and images of the slideshow interface take at most 22Kb (in the heaviest case: moo.fx with showcase mode). - jon1012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's why it's set as hidden in the css when the script is not launched. This way you can present user with another content. Just look at how it's used on http://www.universzik.com/
: when you don't have javascript enabled, you have a totally correct website since all the news are shown anyway (same is true for http://foresightlinux.org/screenshots/ and http://www.holdiland.com/ ).
I think the core information layout work shouldn't be made by this script.
This script library is primarily meant as another way of accessing content, not to be the only one. - dkarlson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@rino --
Point taken. However, you could just as easily write a randomizing script (using PHP, for example) and wrap it in noscript tags. Sure, you won't have the captioning, but you'd still have random images every page load. - L0t3k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
And in many ways it looks alot like slideshowpro... which has always turned clients' heads. - kevincannon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's not really. The main reason to use Javascript over flash is to allow nice fallback for people without Flash. However, if you disable Javascript the slideshow just doesn't show.
A properly implemented Flash slideshow using SWFObject to embed it will show the user alternative content (static images) if Flash isn't installed or Javascript isn't enabled.
Javascript slideshows can be great, but they need to follow the principles of progressive enhancement and unobtrusive scripting.
The images in the slideshow should be in the HTML itself, and be shown even when JS is disabled. - rino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This script is nice looking but it's a disaster. Worse than flash IMO, why? It doesn't degrade at all. Try turning off javascript, reload the page. Guess what? Nothing.
Can't have everything I know... but at least one image linking to a grid of thumbnails or something would be best. - cryptonight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great code. I wrote something similar to this a while back where I faded out an image and then faded a new image in. I didn't do the images stacked on top of one another. IE6 screws up the effect though because although an image may be loaded into memory (which can be checked by the image.complete property) when you change an image object's src to the new image IE6 still takes a second or two to load it so the new image doesn't fade all the way in - it may just appear or appear half way through the fade.
- tinus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Good alternative to most flash slideshows.. Easy to manage without the use of Flash!
- kirwoodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Two points:
1) all the images have to be the same size? no auto-resizing?
2) when you click on a picture it opens in the same browsers, can you add target="_blank" ? - bsummersett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Robots for search engines don't have javascript enabled... There are more too, like screen readers, paranoid people...
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5The website gave me eye cancer.
- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1why the hell are people digging down fordi for contributing more code?! that's just f'ing ridiculous!
- jon1012, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Seems that there is an error in the url ;)
The good url is http://foresightlinux.org/screenshots/ - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@podgey22:
Don't worry. I took a look at the code (and boy is it messy). I'm going to rewrite the thing without (the obfuscated) mootools and using a somewhat more simple approach to the end-designer's implementation (someone who just wants a slideshow shouldn't have to beat all that js) - podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Its quite heavy though...
225K (for images, css and js)
Sure most of that is cached, but still... Something that should be taken into consideration before forcing your users to download. - rotkappchen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok, not bad. But it seems such a waste to have to reserve a piece of your page just for the slideshow. I find this "overlay" idea much better: http://slideshow.triptracker.net/
- kenvandine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1SmoothSlideshow is used for displaying screenshots on http://foresightlinux.org/screenshots, it is very nice!
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wrote something similar to CaeserBlue but I managed to get it double, plus, extra right.
- CaesarBlue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wrote something similar to cryptonight but I managed to get it right.
- kirwoodd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1a quick google search shows:
http://www.barelyfitz.com/projects/slideshow/
which does both resizing and target defintion (and a few other things).
no disrespect to the original poster, I just needed a bit more. - MikeUnwired, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It works and that, to quote Martha, "Is a good thing". I'm going to integrate it into my site as soon as I get the time just because I can.
- Anogar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Meh. Flash is so much better. The fact this this crappy little slideshow is 'news' just proves that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1gee, you think?
