- dope2003, on 04/27/2009, -1/+24Not to rain on anyone's parade but if you don't know how to unzip xampp and unzip wordpress into the htdocs folder of xampp, do you really think you should be trying to do anything with web development?
- JKAL, on 04/27/2009, -0/+8oh, I'm sorry for digging this?
I did NOT know YOU had already seen this type of article.
Can you please let the rest of us know which type of articles you have already seen, we would not want to duplicate stuff YOU already know about, forget the rest of us who are new to this or don't live in front of Digg or the Net 24/7. - NoBSMan, on 04/27/2009, -1/+7You can also use WAMP http://www.wampserver.com/en/
- eagles7977, on 04/26/2009, -3/+7This is a very thorough tutorial, I can honestly say that I was too intimidated with xampp before this, but using it just makes sense especially when you're working with server-side scripts.
- Metalcard, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Same for WAMP
- Archon810, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Exactly what I was thinking. Buried for superfluous.
- illuminea, on 04/27/2009, -1/+5We prefer WAMP. It's so easy to install and use. Here's a tutorial on how to install it and get going: http://wordpressgarage.com/good-blogging-practice/ ...
- xCIone, on 04/26/2009, -3/+7Nice tutorial. Really useful article.thanks for the share
- stef686, on 04/26/2009, -1/+4Nice tutorial, I use xampp its so easy to install and you're away developing locally :D
- garionw, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4I like the PHP Designer/WAMP combo for me
- woofers07, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4XAMPP + Aptana = pure open source web development win
- keyo, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2Can anyone recommend me a cross platform IDE that works well for PHP. I've herad of zend and komodo, neither are free though. I'm using a text editor, debug statements and Drupal's coder module at the moment. Sometimes I think break points and stepping would help productivity .
- designmadz, on 04/26/2009, -6/+8As great as Sixrevisions' usual posts are, I have to bury this as duplicate. Oh please, haven't we had enough XAMP/MAMP tutorials? I learnt to set them up 2 years ago using tutorials found with a Google search :)
- MattBD, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2I like XAMPP, but I've been tinkering with a few web apps such as WordPress, Joomla! and Laconi.ca lately and I found I prefer to set up a virtual machine using Virtualbox and run a Linux server in that. Ubuntu Server makes it really easy to set up a full LAMP stack in under an hour. If you attach the VM to the host interface you can set it up so you can access it via ssh, or you can just use the command line on the VM. Once Apache is running it's easy to view the web page in a browser on the host.
Yes, it is arguably a bit more hassle but I find it works better for me as I like working in a Linux environment anyway, and I guess it's probably closer to a production environment in many ways. I also find it more flexible. However, I'm not a web developer by profession (yet!) so I don't know if other people use this approach. - lee1060, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2XAMPP is excellent, although I did recently try it on Vista and ran into troubles enabling the Apache service. Still, works great on XP!
- maajake, on 04/27/2009, -1/+3I much prefer a ubuntu server setup. Things simply aren't the same without that good old ssh linux command prompt interface... plus possible extensions you might need.
- NeoNevermore, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Nobody here likes Netbeans IDE for PHP development?
- markstory, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Aptana and PDT are both free and eclipse based. Both support step debugging with either the Zend Debugger or Xdebug.
- ChrisTek, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1I use a similar approach, but rather than running it under VirtualBox I installed a copy of (the free version of) VMWare Infrastructure that runs in the background, and then installed CentOS 5.2 which I also installed on my production server. I found its actually much easier to get VMWare configured, because its made for servers and I didn't have to hack around in VirtualBox trying to get it to connect to the host interface and share an IP.
- paidhima, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1I haven't messed with kplaylist, but I do use netjukebox quite frequently. I may have to check that out. Thanks!
- NeoNevermore, on 04/27/2009, -2/+2Netbeans and XAMPP FTW
- gafitescu, on 05/09/2009, -0/+0I like WAMP too.
- jhecht, on 04/28/2009, -0/+0... Is it just me, or is this common knowledge if you know what the hell you're doing?
- BebopBlues, on 04/27/2009, -0/+0Been doing this for a few years now. XAMPP has gotten much easier to install and configure. Wordpress used to be a joke, but now it is quite possibly the best way to build a database driven website for people with little to no coding experience like me. It has so many themes and plugins, you can build a very nice looking and rich site. Some other things to try after you get your own webserver with XAMPP:
kplaylist.net for streaming music from your computer.
gallery.menalto.com for your own web gallery
drupal.org for content managment - muszek, on 04/27/2009, -1/+1Here's a shorter Linux (Debian-based distros) version for you:
sudo apt-get install apache2 php5 mysql-server php5-mysql wordpress - factotum218, on 05/09/2009, -0/+0So has anyone seen the movie Groundhog Day?
- keyo, on 04/27/2009, -1/+1And under windows file permissions are a pain in the ass!
- nukeleearr, on 04/27/2009, -2/+1dugg for xampp
- phenom2k7, on 04/27/2009, -2/+1I much prefer WAMP. XAMPP is just bloated.
- jaygeeze, on 04/26/2009, -3/+2xampp is great for web application development its easy to install and comes with a lot of goodies out of the box. With that said, I'm more keen with phpdev which has all of the things xampp has plus PHP-GTK. It's also easier to install and seems to be less of a system hog vs. xampp. If you're interested, check out phpdev's SorceForge page:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpdev5
If you have Dreamweaver CS4 I've heard good things about Live View as well (though I'd have to hit up torrents to have it so I wouldn't know first-hand). - itecharena, on 04/27/2009, -2/+1XAMPP is best, thanks for the share, good article :)
- Popcorned23, on 04/26/2009, -3/+1Agreed
- AngelaQ, on 04/27/2009, -3/+1So did I, but I'm hoping the theme development tutorials are good. The one I did was a little out of date.
- fwertz, on 04/27/2009, -7/+2U NOOBS SHULD USE IIS
