- ZigZags, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28I hope they incorporate mic technology so I can yell "You sunk my battleship!"
I am looking forward to yelling that phrase after 15 long years.
I lose on purpose just so I can yell that. - sobriquet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I think i'd have more luck hitting a ship just firing a rifle aimlessly towards the coast from my backyard.
- Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Actually, using an open API for such an interesting system in a way that would be useful or fun for thousands of people sounds like a pretty good idea to me.
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9No, I will not pay to cross your bridge, troll.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Potential to be AWESOME! ...cept I think maybe the boats should have to be in water. Just a thought. BTW... I want to be able to carpet bomb cities via google.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Not everyone who Diggs Reddits.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What I have to go outside to play?
I have not been outside for over ten years, not going to start now! - mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3how about Risk instead of Battleship? =)
- Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Shall we play a game?"
"Love to. How about Global Thermonuclear War?"
"Wouldn't you prefer a good game of chess?" - blast_flame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Their was a google earth risk but it got too populer and got a cease and desist from hasbro.
- xploited, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, yes they did. I played the risk game until it was shut down, and it was great fun. I imagine battleship would be put to the same fate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd rather say, "Oh no! You shanked my jengaship!"
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Battleship? Or most awesome game of Total Global Domination EVER! Man think about playing that over google maps...
- danjal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You sunk my battle ship....
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh, battleships on land?
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They can't be over water, because you have to WALK to the location you are "bombing".
Not many people are good enough at swimming to cover that much area looking for an invisible battleship, and I doubt the GPS was waterproof. - stupor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To carpet bomb you would need an automated drop call. Try cingular, they've been doing this for me since the early 90's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bush "Global Thermonuclear War that's what I like to play"
Can I go first? - CedEx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Once they figure out Battleship, I hope they eventually figure out how to make RISK with Google Earth. At least then, no one can flip the board when they are about to lose.
"The Ukraine is weak." - HisLordUberdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haven't you guys heard of Google Earth War? It's sort've like Risk, but a bit more into the economical and technological side of things rather than the strategic.
www.gewar.net
It was on Digg some months ago. It's not very shiny, but it's still got around 6000 registered users. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Maybe that's how Bush does it...or maybe he plays the Risk/Google Earth game instead.
- kalbzayn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Didn't somebody get in trouble for making a Risk/ Google Earth game and have to take it down?
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Kim Jong Il will be the first to download thinking he'll be attacking real US ships....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I understand that looking at a satellite photo of water is boring, but wouldn't it still make sense to be playing Google Earth Battleship over some body of water? I mean, it would be hard for me to find your submarine if you, say, parked it on top of some row houses in a residential area of Newark.
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does your person have a mustache?"
http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/fugitives/fugitives.htm - blast_flame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They made it but they got a cease and desist from hasbro
- antisthenex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that would actually make the submarine VERY apparent and easy to find.
- ashleyjoyce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about using Google Earth to play Chess? Check out http://www.gechess.org . The site was launched over 3 months ago and already has over 600 registered players. Seeing the chess pieces move is optional. You can still play the game without google earth if you like. Also has a chat feature. The game has the potential to evolve into different chess board themes. You could also have a world series played in different countries etc.
- demonicume, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i thought George Bush and Tony Blaire were already playing that game?
- pbarnes7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0SOMEBODY needs to get a life! :-)
- imyayo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sounds pretty cool no doubt, will definitely look into it!
- procdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I'd rather play real-time Guess Who :/
- monstershp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Glad to see this guy trying things, but this is kind of lame.
We've already seen mobile games like http://www.undercover2.com and a bunch of games incorporating data from companies like Navteq (the mapping power behind Google Earth) into their games. A crude battleship add-in to Google Earth just doesn't compare with some of the racing or strategy games with real world data. - hagrin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+0On a slightly off topic comment, when did Digg become the recycling ground of Reddit front page stories? It's almost like deja vu from yesterday's RSS feeds I read yesterday here at Digg. This is a trend that didn't really exist before the new topic sections of Digg, but now is in full fledged effect.
I remember seeing a site that tracked the time differences between Slashdot and Digg posts - does one exist for comparing Reddit and Digg? - tehpoutine, on 10/12/2007, -34/+0How about posting the articles when they actually accomplish something, this article is lame and using google earth for something as simple as battleship is retarded.

What is Digg?
