- somas1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That was cool till mt session crashed
- dlehman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For Dirtycash and others, you can easily try Ruby out on your local system. There is a one-click installer for Ruby available at:
http://rubyinstaller.rubyforge.org/wiki/wiki.pl
Also highly recommended is an on-line book/tutorial written by the same guy (_why) who made this interactive demo site. The book is an extremely entertaining read (hint: chunky bacon) even if you're not that interested in Ruby. Seriously.
http://www.poignantguide.net/ruby/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it crashed whilst performing the terribly complex task of adding 2 + 3 .....
- rsanheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very cool
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoa. Cool!
- Vortech89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been meaning to learn some of this Web 2.0 stuff. This is a nice, easy, and non-time-consuming way to learn some Ruby.
digg - DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1_why has updated the code base for the demo. Each session now consumes much less memory which means the incredible digg influx should be (if not perfectly) better handled.
If it was too slow for you before, give it a shot now. - cyberfelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1darb: Thanks to the wonders of the earth's rotation, different parts of the world have different times. Amazing!
- hollywoodcole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well its not just 2+6
its (2+6)^digg - iSharQ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+123904829385 diggers, actually.
- murph2481, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ruby is pretty powerful! nice to see the MVC model and no java!
- Shafik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Work very slow
- DirtyCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Groansville.
Is there some kinda OpenSource compiler i can get a hold of? The website is a cool idea but not workin very well atm. - Nathaner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was really loathesome when it came to all this web 2.0 stuff, but now it seems a little more soft and fluffy
- cyberfelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is pretty cool. It doesn't work in Opera, though, so I had to dust off IE to get it to work.
- GaryKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is probably the BEST Ruby tutorial I have seen on Digg (so far). I saw quite a few go by, but this one really gives the power to the user and walks them through the language, while letting them type themselves, as well.
Wow, now I am starting to think that Ruby > PHP (at least for certain things, of course.) - BubbleBobble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>> 4*10
Your session has been closed, either due to inactivity or a bit of code which ra
n too long. Refresh the page and you can begin a new session. - bohnsack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Type an empty array to move beyond the boys are different than girls part: []
- GaryKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jadix, just type in whatever has the gray background. So in your case, type in:
[] - dewey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a java programmer, and haven't had the time to investigate all this ruby hype, but from this quick demo I seem to be loving it, not just for rails, but it seems to be a great OOP language for desktop use.
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, this is BEAUTIFUL. can't say much else since i haven't gone through it / i don't have the time, but it's loookin pretty damn slick at first glance.
- Llan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a really cool tutorial. I had only a vague idea what Ruby does, and as usual you only learn about programming languages by trying them out. This is the way to demonstrate something, beautifully done, thank you.
It's quite slow now, probably digg effect :) - darb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Runs extremely slow for me.
1:50 AM Posted: 2+6
1:53 AM Returned: =>8
1:54 AM Posted: "brad".reverse
1:58 AM Returned: =>"darb"
Anyone else have this problem? Or is it just receiving a lot of traffic at 2 AM. - bvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sometimes the demo will time out and ignore your input. Follow the instructions to the letter, and you will do fine. This site is awesome.
- cosmok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kinda slow, but looks great! digg++
- strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It may be slow, but after reading so many Slashdot comments that herald Ruby as the replacement for Perl, Python, Javascript, and others, I wanted to see what it was all about.
- leehord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very slow, but great tutorial.
- npiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats awesome,
2+6 and the thing crashes :// - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very slow, but Ruby looks awesome :)
But, Why doesn't this work with Opera? - rmendis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a nice way to introduce the Ruby language.
Ruby on Rails is the next evolution in web development. - riggzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice! I keep getting Internal Server Errors when doing the simple commands (like "Riggzy".reverse), but I'll check back later.
Very intuitive! +digg - telegon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the waffles comment. Nice. It'll be even nicer when the sites back up.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crash and Burn!
- kanenas.net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is a MUST digg !
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool indeed. I had resisted learning Ruby because I was unsure of practical applications. It appears that the practicality of ruby will lead to practical applications instead of the other way around (as it has been for all other languages).
- DirtyCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks dlehman.
For teh Link that is.. - Jadix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when it gets to typing your name, you have to type "yourname".reverse to move on. But now im stuck at the arrays. Did anyone figure out what to enter to move on from the "Boys are different from Girls" part?
- eaddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't quite work for me.... got to my name and didn't do squat.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1indeed
- mgorbsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the site:
"Hi. Things are down for a bit. After 100,000 lines of Ruby code running through it's veins in a day's time... resources went thin.
I'm going to have a waffle, mull things over, and get this back up in the next hour or so. Thanks for the interest. Sorry things got so crashy there at the end."
So why would I want to use Ruby when the demo highlighting it either crashes or takes forever? - celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0worked for me, nice digg
- Werdock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It didn't go too far for me. After the first step it stopped.
- franksands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a great tutorial, and the demo is great, but I found the language a bit confusing, using the [] in very different contexts...
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this thing doesn't work sometimes if you screw up.
- kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's fast for me. nice.
- mgorbsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Site is back up and I retract my comment about not wanting to use Ruby. I am impressed.
- ptknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's way cool! Dugg!
- .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0id: 54076
- clouder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool, not slow at all when I used it after seeing the link in an irc channel. There was only about 50 diggs for it at that time though.
