- mtekk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29The title is misleading, it claims a list of 10 open source program, but organizations such as Creative Commons are listed along with OSS titles.
- val8ntin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Can someone please tell me how Azureus is ranked higher than Wikipedia and PHP? How can one even compare Wikipedia and Azureus?
Wikipedia is the holy grail of the internet; it is what the internet was designed for and what it should be about. An ad-less, user-contributed database of all of mankinds' knowledge.
Azureus is a torrent-client, largely no different than utorrent or bitlord, used for - mostly - downloading illegal software and multimedia.
But, ***** that! I get my porn with Azureus. Beat that, wikipedia. - InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11
"Here are 10 random open-sourcey-related things I pulled outta my ass. In order of I dunno .. width." - oslointhesummer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13People, PEOPLE! Don't mod down the drunk! Alcoholics make up more than 76 percent of Digg's userbase. If you modded down every drunk who posted a sexually suggestive comment about your mom, where would be be today? Communist Russia...that's where.
- Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10uTorrent is not Open Source program.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7emule over apache gimme a break....
- shadowmatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Err, where art thou, Apache? Arguably one of the most important, albeit largely unseen for the vast majority of Internet users.
- Virion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Linux is there, it's number 2, no less.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How can you even think of making a top ten ... you'd be foced to remove hundereds of good open source software... its just not feasible.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I completely agree. If they're going to have a BitTorrent client there... why don't just put BitTorrent itself up?!
Article could be much better. - b7illsmith, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I'm with you, the title is misleading. On a broader sense, the story is somewhat accurate (program == specific goals of organizations).
- RBasil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Digg, the website where any blogger can make a "Top 10" list about anything and have it be published on the front page.
- AhmedOmran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'd rather become a communist than support Microsoft
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Laughable list.
- Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's like my little sister created a list of open source things she has heard about. (or heard me talk about)
- skit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Why is this on the front page?
- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Linux (also known as GNU/Linux) "
It's not also known as, Linux is the Kernel. Richard Stallman would beat the ***** out of whoever wrote that. - altosaxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't understand why this is on digg at all, it has no logical order and plenty of open source PROGRAMS are missing, and why on earth have I heard of all of these. I do not consider myself an avid internet user and I have even used all of these programs before. USELESS
(it wasn't just Wikipedia, If you look carefully and read instead of looking at the pretty pictures it is actually referring to all wiki. Wikipedia is just mentioned because it is the only form of wiki that the author knows about.) - Virion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I'm pretty sure uTorrent isn't open source, at least I've never seen it mentioned and the site for it never hinted it was...
- niran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This content-free article is brought to you by the Wisdom of Crowds. When people who don't know what they're talking about pick the articles, things like this happen.
- Bleakvoid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6You know what? I'm tired of Digg users. It's a *collaborative* news site; submit your own damn "Top 10 Open Source Jibbles" if you don't like this one...there's nothing preventing you from finding a nice CSS/XML tutorial on Digg, building your own credible blog from it, and then submitting it. And before anyone makes the comment, no, I can't be assed to do it myself, or contribute any articles. So don't bother with that one.
+ points for whoever can tell me what OSS developer coined the term 'jibble' - Submerge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is a horrible list, I can't see this being anything but a crappy personal favorites.
PHP should be a lot higher on the list. Buried the story. - Reziarfg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wait wait wait, Linux beat out Firefox? I'm sorry, but you would think Linux is more useful than a web browser...Unless they're not in any specific order, in which case I apologize.
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Okay... this list is pretty lame. A couple fit, and are good, but mostly no. Several arn't even programs.
10. Emule - No.
9. Audacity - Very good. Agree.
8. Creative Commons - While very good, it is not a program.
7. OGG - Again, very good, but not a program.
6. PHP - Programming language, not a program.
5. Wiki - I suppose it's a program.
4. Azureus - Very useful, but hardly should be #4.
3. OpenOffice - Ok, that fits.
2. Linux - While I wouldn't call it a program, I guess it fits.
1. Firefox - Great, yes, but #1? I dunno. - rezza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Richard Stallman would beat the ***** out of whoever wrote that."
He'd have to get his cluestick untangled from his beard first. - ddales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just what I was thinking. Who's top 10, the writer? by downloads? by installations?
Makes no sense - rustyryan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3paul mutton
- timf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Exept that the software is called MediaWiki.
Wikipedia is just one website using it. - Pokelicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This article is a bit dull. I'd prefer reasons as to why each program makes the top 10 instead of descriptions of what they do.
- amire80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gimp, anyone?
- tehmoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, wacky, no Gimp, no Gaim, no Wine and crappy MySQL but no PostgreSQL, what a horrible list.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree Creative Commons isn't exacty a program, the WIki thing however is refering to the Wikimedia code/software, NOT Wikipedia.com (just the software it runs on)
As for eMule, on http://sourceforge.net/ it's the most downloaded program, not quite sure why, but it is..
- Ben - kierskoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lets start burying the trash....
i wikied this post have a looksee
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/***** - somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Other way round; Richard Stallman gets angry with the GNU/Linux operating system being referred to as "Linux." Linux is just the kernel.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Wikipedia is web-based software. Sounds like a program to me.
- egbert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6What about perl, gcc, linux, ...
- hackershandbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No emacs. no perl, no gawk .... I guess they just bundled them into LINUX forgetting that they are Gnu Copyleft ..... and heavily downloaded - even before the days of LINUX I remember installing all of these - and more - on Sun workstations circa 1990 - and then updating regularly.
But of course - we had to get the tarball, extract it and run make config and make - sometimes it broke and we had to fix it ... which reminds me - where is gmake, gcc and gcc++ on this list?
We forget that Linus was standing on the shoulders of giants - the GNU project had been running for a long time before Linux and without the huge range of free and easily ported GNU tools - Linux would have taken a LOT LONGER to become popular.
Of course when I migrated from academia to business I took all this knowledge with me - along with many tar-formatted tapes of GNU tools - which saved me trying to download them.
Which would have been hard - because in the UK, DEMON had only just started up .... - tmcc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Actually, Wikipedia IS a program. Not in the executable sense, more like a plan: a series of steps to be carried out or goals to be accomplished; "they drew up a six-step plan"; "they discussed plans for a new bond issue" (google define is great).
PHP is most definately a program, in the traditional sense. - ezran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3THIS ARTICLE IS MISLEADING...
There are a lot of other open source projects that are not sexy but extrimely important. Consider Bind, which run internet naming services.
Creative Commons is an open source LICENSE not a project!!
Mediawiki is an open source project that creates the software for wikipedia. Wikipedia, the site, is an open effort but it's not an open source project! - unitedkronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seems like an half-arsed effort to me, just because a program is open source doesn't mean it's better then the closed sourced equivalent, like how uTorrent is more efficient then Azureus. Ideally, a list like this needs to include other options for different usages, like adding Freenet and Frostwire alongside eMule; they have the right idea listing Audacity in it though.
- Burgerman851, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey! Where's BZFlag? http://www.bzflag.org/
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Richard Stallman would beat the ***** out of whoever wrote that."
No he wouldn't because he's a hippy. - inactive, on 06/07/2008, -0/+1Looks like he forgot to digg you up. Oh well, you get my point.
- DarkZen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Im wondering where openSSH is??? I use that ALL the time working on my servers and i know my university as well as just about everyone else i know that connects remotly to work on a system uses it as well.... I would think that should be on the list. =) Correct me if im wrong of if its not really "oss?"
HB - solidcube, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Azureus allows numerous things the vanilla torrent client doesn't, including encrypted transfer and piecemeal downloading-- you can pick and choose parts of torrents that you want to download. Very nice. It blows all other torrent software out of the water.
- nbuet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Mostly idiotic and controversial. Totally useless.
- Kailash.Nadh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Azureus in the list? Apache/MySQL "worth mentioning" ?

that list is a mess... Unless it's a top10 OpenSource apps for the masses (windows users...). It has to be.. it includes P2P apps... - AhmedOmran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Vim for president =)
