Yikes... - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+58If you think that java and VB were the same then you need to try to learn them both again.
- Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29I think this guy is just talking out of his ass. Saying Java and Visual Basic are basically the same thing is like saying chinese characters are the same thing as latin characters. It's stupid. Java is a C syntax language, VB is a... ***** syntax language.

thx to inio - inio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27this is even funnier in context: http://lukewelling.com/2006/08/03/java-programmers-are-the-erotic-furries-of-programming/
- StarCrusher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28I am sooo glad that the submitter took the time and effort to come up with a decent description rather than "title says it all". The insiteful and exhaustative "hilarious" alone sets new standards for submitters.

Go download and install wordpress. Take the "Hello Dolly" plugin (included) and tweak it. Next, pick a more complex plugin, and do it again.
Open source PHP is your friend.
php.net is your friend.
Once the calling grabs you, there's no giving up. Welcome, brother.
P.S. Geeks who pick on guys like this piss me off. We were all L@mer n00bs once....the greatest coders I ever met never wasted time putting other people down. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21ajax != programing language
ajax == technique - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Finally I feel dignified for being disgusted when i have to use the word ajax.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19programmer < developer < system analyst < software engineer < software architect
So be sure to call yourself a software architect, or maybe a l33t haxx0r. - dcbebop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20No, its because Java programmers fall into one of two categories:
1) Can't speak english and can barely write Java, therefore are unable to argue back
2) Write Java and are tired of these stupid comparison arguments and just let the Perl guys live in their egotistic mentalities.
I'm really sick and tired of these conversations. You pick the right language for the job, not pick the job and square-peg the language. You should try and know as many of those as possible. - bede, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I have a feeling that anyone who calls themselves a 'developer' rather than 'programmer' is trying to put themselves a step up the hierarchy
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18So where do the Ojbective C programmers fit into that equation? Im also kinda shocked that Java was so low on the list, I think i can agree with Assembler and Lisp but I think there are some C++ programmers who definately think they are better than C programmers

- Ninjin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Javascript > Java?
Funny, but pointless. - Misanthrope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Weak! VB above Pascal??
Where does it end I ask ya? - Snoopsor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Pretty much the exact same thing? Are you serious? A few more years of programming experience (if you choose to pursue it) will teach you otherwise. Personally I'd put visual basic lower on list - the chart is very funny all the same :) and yeah, the c# developers are going to put themselves above php programmers. After looking at php code for a long enough time, you see it's really the visual basic of the web world - not a bad language by definition, but tends to used by the people who have never done any programming before - the people who never studied software engineering/computer science and think it can't be that hard, and thus the language gets a bad rap.
- spudlyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11My friend Breadbox is in my estimation the world's greatest INTERCAL programmer. He wrote a complete software floating point library in INTERCAL, a language intentionally made to be difficult and as unlike any other programming language as possible. This is basically like implementing all the functionality of the 387 math co-processor, it's a ***** of non-trivial code written in a sadomasochistic programming language. He did this so he could write a Fast Fourier Transform, you know -- for hack value. The point I'm making is that you can write awe inspiring programs in any programming language, even twisted evil ones.

- obrienslalom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Great stuff. I think c# developers would definitely put themselves above php programmers.

- tangledweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So in summary, you are an asm programmer, and think you are superior to everybody (or at least everybody on digg).
The diagram would seem to accurately classify at least one person then. - psygnisfive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8We JS programmers get such a bad rap. You don't even think we're genuine programmers! :(
We are, I tell you, we are! We might not have the greatest programming language, and there are many posers who abuse the easy with which they can write something in it, but we're not all like that! There are REAL JavaScript programmers out there! - kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8And yet dare I say those in the bottom of the chain (java) earn the most $$$ (at least on average)?
And those on top earn the least. Does anyone know anyone making a living writing Lisp? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8whitespace > all

1.1 Origin and Purpose
The INTERCAL programming language was designed the morning of May 26, 1972 by Donald R. Woods and James M. Lyon, at Princeton University. Exactly when in the morning will become apparent in the course of this manual.
1.2 Acronym
The full name of the compiler is "Compiler Language With No Pronounceable Acronym", which is, for obvious reasons, abbreviated "INTERCAL".
Is the ghost of Douglas Adams writing computer manuals? This s*** is hysterical. - VesperDEM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The older generation thanks you for the PDF version. :)
- g000gle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can barely read that mate. Or maybe I'm up too late...
- akersmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While he may be right about Ruby programmers thinking they are superior to everyone but C, Assembler and Lisp hackers, this guy clearly knows very little about Ruby. Look at the note about Ruby at the bottom of the image. Ruby isn't a web language at all, it's gained mindshare recently as a web language thanks to Ruby on Rails (a ruby based framework for web development,) but it's been in use as a general purpose scripting language in the same kind of niches as Python or Perl for over a decade!
Also, I've known some ADA programmers, and they consider themselves superior to everyone :) I doubt that the average Visual Basic programmer even knows what ADA is. - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ragipy

- 1iProd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11LIES! Python is superior to Perl!!!
- pak314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4At the time VB came out, I thought it was a great language for quickly putting together GUI applications. You could do it much more quickly than MFC or a variety of tools at that time. I didn't entirely like the BASIC syntax I must admit. I remember more than a few people having a hard time with MFC once they deviated from the features of the VC++ application wizard.
There days however C# can let you put together an application as quick as Visual Basic with C# have a syntax closer to C++ and Java. - RockMyMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11What about people who really wish they were PHP programmers, but can't seem to wrap their head around it (like me)? Seriously, the only people I think I am above are the ones who call HTML a programming language. I feel really pathetic now. :( (Dugg)
- Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes...
The title was... hilarious...
I wanted to advice people to read the rest as well... but my eyes hurt from the bad quality, so I won't. - sergsamohin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Java is the best OO language!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man, gwbasic that shipped with MS-DOS was TEH programming language and development environment. It doesn't appears at the chart 'cause it is in heaven.
- Nachoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is a Firefox extension for that called "Image Zoom". If i remember correctly Opera can do it out of box.
The problem however is, none of the above will actually help since the author did not use an appropriate font for such low pixels. Zooming in will make it even more unreadable (at least thats what happened to me on my machine). - downlo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9No way, Python is where it belongs, below Perl.
