- Paktu, on 10/11/2007, -7/+38I love lamp.
- zombieball, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31I must agree this was quite boring. Seems like some simple thrown together slide show a pair of friend's made to try and become "popular" on digg.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Digg is a series of tubes running dump trucks in parallel.
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Yeah, how to build a website handling probably millions of requests a day without ever really breaking. Gee that's not interesting at all.
Why don't you kids go back to the stupid videos section? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20And the digg fanboys enter to digg down those not fascinated with this article just because its about digg.
- philovivero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Hmm. I would Digg this article (I am one of the co-authors of the presentation), except that site stole Digg's content and put it on their for-profit ad-riddled page, which is annoying to me personally. Hence, I shall bury as "lame." Sorry, submitter. Nothing against you personally. You can get the presentation from a non-ad-riddled site. Find it and submit that story instead.

No, digg is actually pretty quick. What slows to a crawl is your browser. Just open a topic with a lot of comments and watch firefox's CPU usage, or whatever browser you use. Through the roof. It's hard to render that much content."
Neither reddit or slashdot have the problem to the extent that digg has it. In comparison, digg is a mobility mobile and slashdot/reddit are the voyager probe.
Digg is not pretty quick (well, it might be server side if thats what you meant) but once the browser has to deal with the javascript then it slows to a crawl, and this is a result of sloppy coding.. which is a result of whoever coded the comment system at digg.
So it is diggs problem, but they don't seem to care about it because it is client side not server side. Although I guess some of these "new changes" that are coming to digg will hopefully include an optimized comment system equal to that of reddit's. - Suroot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9@jdelsman
I hate you for hating Apache... Hell, even Microsoft likes Apache! They like Apache so much, they're gonna steal the source to make IIS8 - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10@kevin45

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sharding - tacocat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5The coolest thing about this was that it introduced me to the slideshare website. Seems like it could be useful for presentation givers around the world.
- badulescub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4My comments, diggs and posts are the technology that poweres digg. And that's working just fine.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10No one cares...
- emehrkay, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6so do i :)
the snorg girl loves it too - jeffyjones, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I certainly appreciate what they're doing there, but sometimes treating the open source as religion thing bothers me. A lot of the problems they've encountered have been solved by commercial products that cost far less than a (good) single developer's salary.
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nah, digg with empty databases is just as interesting I'm sure. ;o)
- coredump0x01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Most likely Debian. Noted it from the links on those "We'll be back shortly" pages.
- Twango, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Digg hasn't had much power lately, IMO.
- DeathBorn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3No, THIS is the technology that powers Digg!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b8/Deep_Thought%2C_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy.jpg - LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Supposedly microsoft's sql is a bit faster than mysql, I have no idea if it's true, and it came from a software engineer that worked at microsoft. (Not on sql though)
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kevin made digg? I always thought he just had the idea of voting for stories.
- WarMace, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3...and i was hoping for Digg Server Pr0n.
- GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1everybody loves RUBY ON RAILS, nobody ever uses it
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The technology that powers digg: Random old comps thrown into clusters as needed.
- sonicdevo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1he may be curious as to which flavor, BSD, etc.
- GentooFanBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I wonder how it would compare against slashcode.... Pros and Cons and all
- ellisgl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I wish that there were more details. Like "How to make your own digg farm tutorial"... Ok - one could hope....
- livevil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah but what distro is what I was wondering.
- locnguyen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What alternatives do you suggest that are commercial? I'm interested in other options that I could use. Thanks.
- estacado, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My guess is that Kevin's next project will use Ruby on Rails, or maybe Digg will switch to Ruby on Rails in the future. He's digging activity shows his interest in it.
- GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1debian
- crazybugger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Looks like digg is still reeling under master/slave mentality.
- bytefoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yep, a classic case of zealotry. Use the right tool for the job, regardless if its COTS or Open Source.
- xpose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That makes two of us. I wanna see more behind the scenes. :)
- SniperX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1(comment made AFTER the new comment system is in place)
The page ran slow because there was just too much damned content loaded at once, people cried, they change the system so that not all of the content is loaded all at once, people cried. I am not envious of the position they are in. - rasp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I hear ya brother
- MrDaniil, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Somehow this informations feels out of date to me. Can someone from digg talk about it? There was a white-paper about flickr on mySQL site. Would be nice to have the same for digg done by digg. Something that will provide some good stats and actual configs. Not just general info you can find anywhere.
- cruxop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I own a company that gets 29,000,000+ pageviews (not even hits. If I were counting per object hits it'd be in the 100s of thousands) per month.
We have 1 MySQL server, 1 static content server, and 1 application server. The site handles traffic easily even at peak and we're using PHP.
PHP is slow. Slower than C++ for sure, but its comparable to ASP and Ruby. And with a good caching solution and a well designed backend to manage that, you can easily use it.
And to one up ASP, its free and open source so you can compile your own extensions to it if you do need the speed of C. - derekivey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Probably linux...
- flyswat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I work for a company that gets over 9 million hits a month to their website.
We have ONE single MS SQL Server, and 11 2k3 servers behind a load balancer. Our site handle the traffic just fine.
Ever wonder if the Open Source Zealots realize how slow PHP really is. - desmondregan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1hmm
- livevil, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1WHAT OS?
- GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0why would anyone digg this up? it's a generic microsoft attack and it's not funny anymore.
- desmondregan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1dear slideshare,
u r gay
regards, jeremy - Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Perhap Digg should invest in some better technology, so far Digg is slow and almost useless after their recent upgrade.
- rayishu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Lamp is great, although Ruby on Rails is not that bad either i would love to see how Ruby on Rails plays a part in the future
btw the PHP load balancer and the mysql sharing works im a small PHP developer ive never had to deal with such a high compacity project before im curiuos to learn more - GentooFanBoy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0...
- liquidfirex, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6I love Xampp.
- himey, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7I am a DBA and I find it interesting. Hey Kevin, if you guys ever decide to move up to Oracle, let me know. I'll work for ya. ;)
- emehrkay, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1yeah xampp is great. i have it on a thumbdrive, just plug and play.
