Not really :| - tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9coding is really not a spectator sport/event.
its ability to entertain (even for other coders) is questionable.
heck, i love programming. but i doubt i'd be very excited watching someone else do it. even with cool lights, sound effects, and a fog machine.
(...ok, the fog machine might win me over. but only if they have lasers too) - mharroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wow they fail to mention the ACM International Collegiate Programming contest.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Communication and language evolves. 99% of people who read that sentence will understand the slang terminology and get his point.
If you want to be a real grammar nazi, then you should probably start speaking old english, since everything we speak today is just a perversion of that, right? - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Latin est where it is at.
- synae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Damn straight.
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Where? India?
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its an idiom, there is nothing wrong with idioms
- DiggLurker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Microsoft made a few episodes of a show like that. The Las Vegas hacking one is pretty good.
http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/The_Code_Room - ZetSabre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I competed once while I was in high school. We came in second to last, and we were proud of it because our school doesn't actually offer any programming courses.
It's really a lot of fun (even if you aren't a great coder). It's a good learning experience for coding on a team. - TheKoopaBros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While coding is cool and all it is pretty boring to watch.
Its good that things like these are being broadcasted at least to the online audience. - Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps something that incorporates the small competitions from shows like The Apprentice would be entertaining. For instance, a competition coming up with the next greatest product, Web 2.0 phenomena, or engineering marvel. This would include all the gory drama of design and marketing but also play up the technical aspects as they progress.
- Maxpower57, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2American idol wasn't cool.

(or whitespace)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitespace_%28programming_language%29 - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd actually watch this. Not because I'm a big coder..the extent of my abilities end are making bb code myspace pages look ugly. I think it would be kind of unique and impressive if they were any good.
- bury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure you could say an Idol, especially among most Americans.
- Dorkbot101, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I could imagine at least a little entertainment value. I mean, watching a highly skilled coder cut through functions like nobody's business is kind of cool... but maybe only on an intellectual level :P
- synae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More challenging isn't better, more expressive is.
The language that lets you do whatever you want, while getting in your way as little as possible -- that is the language you should choose.
Unless you're writing device drivers, in which case you will never truly enjoy the project. Finish it as quickly as possible and move on. - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Hello World in C event:
On your mark... GET SET.... GO!!!!
*hears the sound of rapid keyboard clicking from 100 keyboards* - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, I saved this blog post from one of the Gentoo devs a couple years ago. I forget who now, but damn if it didn't make me piss myself back then.
"So PBS has this show on now called Cooking Under Fire. It's kinda like a
culinary American Idol where these chef wannabes compete for the chance to be
hired at a celebrity chef's restaurant as, one would hope, a cook. It's really
funny because the contestants actually talk trash and stuff like they're
heavyweight boxers or something. But they're chefs. I mean how scary is that?
Well, they do handle big knives I guess. Anyway it's worth a laugh. But while I
was watching the show I was thinking they should bring this format to the open
source world. Like a battle of the coders. Call it Coding Under Fire. Yeah,
that would be cool. I'd love watch trash-talking geeks on the tube. "Yeah, my
loops are so tight they'll have your head spinning." or "I'll have you so
scared you'll be dumping core." They could have cool competitions like seeing
who can reverse engineer a driver for an unknown piece of hardware in 30
minutes. The winner would get a job at Google or OSDL. Instead of getting 86'd
they'd get SIG11'd. It could be hosted by Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox, and Eric S.
Raymond. It'll be a blast!" - Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome, thanks for the link.
- Adoozie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's actually pretty fun, if programming is your thing. I've done three local contests at my university and competed last year in my area's regional ACM ICPC.
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1geminitojanus, you failed. Your code won't compile. Look at it closely.
So I guess it was a challenge after all. - jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If by "it" you mean involuntary virginity, then yes.
- Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If there was a reality TV show based on coding I'd watch it.
Yes, I'm a nerd. - EzraSchwartz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nerds
- wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Granted that watching someone write web pages or encoding algorithms isn't exactly my idea of a night on the town, there are a few examples of where it can be entertaining:

next time try a more challenging language.. like perhaps Erlang, or at least Objective-C. - Spikito, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3bob
- DarkXanthos, on 10/12/2007, -21/+11Dude. Chill Out. Buried for being a douche.
- mofomojo, on 10/12/2007, -50/+4Where WHAT is at? I don't understand. Stop using your words to think for you in pre-made sentences like this.
