- InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37Newsflash: People from outside America use the Internet too!
- mpeg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30nobody in america?
I thought the brazilians would care - vramdal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24The greeks won the Euro, not the World Cup.
- kwanbis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29do "united states" people realize that "americans", are all the people that live from alaska to argentina?
- cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I predict Asc and Joe are idiots.
- InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19How is this AI? Just seems like statistical analysis to me.
- sablazo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@ strictnein:
"No, they are North Americans or South Americans, similar to how one would use African, Asian, or European. "Americans" refers to people from the United States of America. How this elludes many people is beyond me."
Actually, it wasn't for quite some time after the USA became independant that we (yeah, I'm an american) took over the label "american." How many people assume American means from the USA elludes me. Originally the word "american" indicated someone was a native of the americas (i.e., a Native American). These days I suspect that many outside of the USA avoid calling themselves Americans because they want little to do with our country, which might be understandable (flame away, or digg me down, whatever).
Oh, and Re: "they are North Americans and South Americans" when (if) you leave the USA do you refer to yourself as a North American? Probably not. Why then should "South Americans" refer to themselves that way? I'm not sure what the first sentence of your comment really even means. - ZergyPoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16yeah... the greek didn't win the world cup. Brazil beat Germany in the final in 2002.
- vramdal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Too bad USAnians don't care about the world cup. They have a very good team this year.
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14if they are so confident they should be placing large bets right about now
too bad AI has no room for calculating things like Luck, the Underdog phenomenon and the like
just because something is statistically "likely" to happen does not in any way mean it WILL happen now - Foulone, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19I am pretty sure that most of the football (soccer) following population could have picked that if being objective. Why did this require AI.
Look at history, and see how many times Brazil & Italy have won the World Cup, or just played in finals.
Damn talk about over thinking a problem - jason7655, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I wish more americans did care. We are the only country where this isn't basically the number one sport.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"It isn't like it's something new, it's just a commonplace technique being applied to something no one in America cares about."
So ***** off and stop whining about it then, yank. - jedeye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They have it all wrong.
England will win the World Cup in a final against Germany.
England 4 : Germany 2
I created an algorithm yesterday to predict this, an fed 1 years worth of World Cup data into it. - bitrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There's nothing magic about AI, it's can refer to any technique that allows a computer to make decisions. Besides, calling it 'Artificial Intelligence' makes a better headline than 'Statistical Analysis'!
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I wonder if their algorithm looked at locations as well? Last time a South American team won in Europe was in 1958.
- InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I dunno, robots and *****?
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8MattL920: AI tends to be much more focused on making decisions, doing planning, reasoning about things, etc. Maybe if they modelled the physics of the ball, and modelled all the decisions each player might make, *then* it would be AI, but that would be even more absurd and overboard than what they already did.
Granted, coming up with statistics on specific head-to-head matchups is a little more in the direction of AI, but it's still pretty much just statistics. - wtweber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I hate U.S. sports for one reason... Time Out. What the *****? Why do you need to stop? Do you need to change your tampon? Is that it? Shut the hell up and play the damn game.
- jedeye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9How will they win, by the hand of God?
- DetroitTigers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They also computed that the Detroit Lions will most likely not win the Super Bowl this year.
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9COME ON ENGLAND !!!
- deeflash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8yeah, guys! this is really dumb! you shouldn't pay any attention to that article!
... ... ...
I gotta call my bookie.. brb - Duncan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Its what Computer Scientists do, run algorithms over data using statistical data to mine out some probability of a given event.
Meanwhile I bet their algorithm doesn't take into account the dark horse Australia >:) Go you good thing ! - ZergyPoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Heaven forbid they should care about a sport that an actually significant number of people in the world care about... unlike American Football or baseball.
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sure but, they are students trying to get a final grade. The whole point of the operation was to over-think it. Besides, they got an "A" so, it worked.
- ziggy101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You have to wonder why they went back 20 years for data to analyse ? Like any sport its about the quality of the current team, teams that were strong 20 (even 10) years ago could be useless today and visa versa. Would have thought it made sense to look back at most 5 years - otherwise the data gets diluted.
Having said that, Brazil , since they are consistently good is probably a pretty good bet.... - sha1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'll see your Lavar Arrington and raise you Jonah Lomu

Quite an interesting article on the effect of padding on athletes. Basically it states that there would not be more deaths in American football if there was no padding, since the athletes would behave entirely different.
I for one look forward to watching some good matches, and I really hope that the World Cup will contain really good football, instead of a lot of defensively oriented teams, with 0-0 and 1-0 matches as a result.
I truly hope that a player like Ronaldhino will show the world just how amazing a player he is, and win the hearts of those North Americans who think that "soccer" is a horrible sport. - kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe, but Brazil will lose by the Achilles heel.
- sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4except that usually teams don't win the world cup on different continents to where they come from....and home countries usually do particularly well.
hence england vs germany final :O) - nacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Show me the computer that picked the Red Sox and White Sox winning the (Baseball) World Series in consecutive years. If this is AI, then the wise guys in Vegas must be computer super-heroes for the groundbreaking work that they do across all sports.
As for Rugby vs. American Football, I've played both at a college level (Tailback/receiver and Prop[3]/Hooker), and Football doesn't hold a candle to Rugby. Besides the constant physical pounding, the biggest difference that got me between Football and Rugby was the 40min halves. To me, rugby is like a football kickoff that never stops. No football game I have ever played can come close to the exhaustion of one rugby period.
Arrington: 6'3" 250 lbs
Lomu: 6'5" 275 lbs
As for the the real Football (Soccer), I am really excited to see this World Cup. It is the first time it will get decent media coverage in the States. - kanundrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I reversed the algorithm and discovered Trinidad and Tobago will win. Go Trinidad and Tobago!!
- jedeye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If you are modding my comment down because you don't understand it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_of_God_goal - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Why use _artificial_ intelligence when you can use _real_ intelligence in a situation like this?
All you have to do is look at the teams... see who has been doing well, who is most motivated etc... - cybersamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Brazil winning the World Cup..... kinda like the Yankees winning the World Series: not something very difficult to predict.
- iamgnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes we are continuing to improve. No we don't have a chance. If we advance it will probably be behind Italy in which case we will face Brazil. I don't think it's possible to be enough of a Homer to believe we could beat Brazil ;)
So unless really bizzare things happen in our group and/or with Brazil, the best we get is 4 games this year.
Freddy will be the only player we field in '10 and he will be unstoppable ;) (i'm a DC United fan and while he has improved greatly this year, he is no Pele)
-dave - ZergyPoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"You are totatly wrong about Baseball. It's very popular outside the US. It's just not popular in Europe. Some of the best players are from Asian Counrties."
Yes, but there is no country where it even holds a candle to soccer.
You sound like my co-workers who try to convince me that NFL Europe is actually popular. It is... for some Americans living in Europe, but it isn't popular by any stretch of the imagination.
Even basketball is much more popular than baseball worldwide, and even basketball doesn't compare with soccer's popularity. Hell, even Tennis is more popular than baseball. - st00p1d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Mod me down, commented without RTFA.
- Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So this thing is bracketed? And the US has to go against the best team out there in order to advance?
Cripes!
Ok. I will watch this "(mostly)World Cup" and give it another chance. Country-team sports can be interesting regardless of the actual sport involved. I think a good deal of the popularity is due to that, not the sport itself. People love rooting for their country. - ZergyPoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Probably because our kids can afford more equipment to play other sports... soccer and basketball require only a ball, which is why in poorer countries they are very, very popular."
Poorer countries? Like Western Europe? Like Japan?
If you were stating "facts" then American Football, and Baseball would be far more popular in many more affluent countries, when right now nobody cares about them outside the US.
@Alphabet... I don't know what you're smoking, but American Football is tediously boring to watch, as the game stops moving every minute or two. Football, or Soccer, is extremely fun to watch, and is so for most of the people in the world. - sennmen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let's call the weather forecast off too, while we're at it.
- Riotblade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How about the Brazilian Americans or Italian Americans? It's not like they have to devote themselves to America once they become American.
- datastorageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How is this artificial intelligence? Its just an algorithm nothing more. Hardly qualifies as artificial intelligence.
- domr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's what happens when you draw teams out of a hat. You get stronger groups and weaker groups. Live with it.
- cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I honestly dint see an 'American' Football World Cup, Nascar or any other American sport being global in any way. So stop criticizing the FIFA Word Cup. Football (Soccer) is a true sport loved by everyone. Plus we dont commercialize it by having million dollar commercials, half time shows, hot dogs and other crap that separates it from the sport.
- pocketcalc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In this picture, if by the hands of God Germany wins the game against Brazil, Argentina would avenge their latin brothers, aka 'hermanos'.
something like "we came to avenge our masters" - jedeye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't go by the FIFA rankings, Elo rankings are better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_football_rating - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"We are the only country where this isn't basically the number one sport."
So, you are saying we should be like everyone else? A big happy hommogneous world. Lets all go get a BigMac and a Pepsi.
How about we celebrate our differences and diversity. People can enjoy different things. - wqwert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This reminds me of a Numb3rs episode =)
