- stachesnmullets, on 09/18/2008, -0/+126That's over $20k in free tuition - hop on it!
- bigonthepigdan, on 09/19/2008, -2/+56because that piece of paper, unfortunately, still makes people believe you're smart.
and because walking to class in the rain, suffering from a beer pong induced hangover, on your way to a computer architecture class about big-endian vs. little-endian... it's a right of passage - etunkO, on 09/18/2008, -0/+50I see in the list of lectures that they had to edit out some parts due to copyright restrictions. That just shows how the current copyright paradigm can be a damper on eductation. But i'm absolutely going to look into the robotics lectures.
- TheGreatBelow, on 09/19/2008, -2/+52All work and no degree makes Jack a dull boy.
- EmailAddress, on 09/18/2008, -3/+50This info seems for a small group.. the masses will not hop on because of a lack of motivation for it. Those people do however have motivation for myspace/facebook/WoW......
"The world is full of willing people, some willing to work, the rest willing to let them." - Robert Frost
"There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there." - Indira Gandhi - jjaime213, on 09/19/2008, -1/+46This is awesome! Who cares about the degree ...the knowledge is the most important thing!
- CobaltBlue, on 09/19/2008, -1/+41For a piece of paper.
- Intrusionv2, on 09/19/2008, -1/+36Dugg for torrent-download option.
- minorgods, on 09/19/2008, -0/+31Now if it only came with that much course credit as well...
- Aleman360, on 09/19/2008, -1/+30There's a big difference between coding and computer science. A lot of problems aren't solved by library functions.
- Aleman360, on 09/19/2008, -3/+25Because college is just as much about social development as intellectual.
A degree is not just a piece of paper... it shows that you can handle tremendous pressure, learn stuff, survive on your own, and still have a good time while doing it. - BedPost, on 09/19/2008, -0/+20I am Jack's stressed lumbar region.
- ibeattetris, on 09/19/2008, -2/+21you sir did not go to georgia tech
"where 50% graduate with engineering degrees and 100% graduate with drinking disorders." - Shiftyeyedgoat, on 09/19/2008, -0/+18Aww.... no credit. But at least it's free educational materials compacted into course form somewhere.
Note: SEE courses cannot be taken for credit and do not include access to Stanford-restricted computers, libraries, or services. Content may not include all the material used in the campus offering and cannot be used for commercial purposes. - LuxFX, on 09/19/2008, -1/+18You're not too big on the value of knowledge, are you?
- bagboyrebel, on 09/19/2008, -5/+22But Bill Gates and Steve Jobs didn't finish college. By undeniable logic that means that nobody needs college.
- jd33, on 09/19/2008, -2/+17it's a structured course organized by one of the best universities in the States. Good luck with that google search.
- rlinse, on 09/19/2008, -0/+15You can find many free online courses from great universities here:
http://www.oculture.com/2007/07/freeonlinecourses. ... - CobaltBlue, on 09/19/2008, -0/+14Yes. You will be way ahead in your classes and have more time to study for other classes.
- kevinmotel, on 09/19/2008, -1/+14wut?
- rockinrimmer, on 09/19/2008, -1/+14hmm makes me wonder why I'm starting my computer science degree next week
- species, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12no, you're not enrolling in the school they're just offering taped lectures and other material.
- TheMagician2007, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12MIT is offering over 1800 (that's not a typo) courses for free online including all the course materials, homeworks, exams, lecture notes, basically everything, but the books: http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/courses/courses/inde ...
And many of them are uploaded to YT: http://uk.youtube.com/profile_play_list?user=MIT
Very cool! - septicmadman, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12How could it not be helpful?
- Aleman360, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11Well yea, if you have a good idea or are exceptionally charismatic you will likely be successful no matter what. But by undeniable logic, not everyone can have a kick ass idea or be exceptionally charismatic.
- hfactor, on 09/19/2008, -0/+10*rite
- MacBookForMe, on 09/18/2008, -2/+12I am ON and you?
- jollyroger814, on 09/19/2008, -0/+9Sorry to say, but ITT Tech is not a better education.
- santaliqueur, on 09/19/2008, -4/+13Try to get a job without the degree. Sadly, the paper is more important.
- MtheoryX, on 09/19/2008, -0/+8You two fine sirs, or madams, seem to be having a rational conversation.
Please excuse me as I question the accuracy of my eyesight. - uceboyx, on 09/19/2008, -0/+83+7 courses sound great already!
- honemasterT, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7google MIT opencourseware
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7Yes, I had to search around for that one a bit. Edited my comment as such to reflect my findings. But thank you for the confirmation.
- stutimandal, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7Berkeley offers the same thing. Check out webcast.berkeley.edu
I do admit that Stanford's user interface is better. - forchilli, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7This is awesome. Will download!!
- connieLingus, on 09/19/2008, -1/+8odd that Stanford U would use MS Silverlight for their default video player. figured they would use something a little more open.
- tomarocco, on 09/19/2008, -1/+8@MtheoryX - Argue for your limitations and sure enough they're yours.
- CKR600, on 09/19/2008, -4/+10OK, insane costs of attending schools like these aside. Even my school (BCIT) has digital projectors and whiteboards. What's up with MIT and Stanford using cheapo, dirty & hard to read chalkboards.
- dakdak900, on 09/19/2008, -1/+7A lot of top flight schools are starting to do this, MIT offers a lot of class materials online. The big picture with this is that teens in India and other developing countries will be able to learn from the best schools in the world for no cost. They'll be able to bring US innovation to the 3rd world and build up their economies.
- Hortinstein, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6wish they had this a few years back when I started my Comp Sci degree...really cool though
- antigravit42, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6Are there other Universities offering Intro to Computer Science lectures online?
- binarysemaphore, on 09/19/2008, -1/+7huh..big deal..IITs already offer many courses on youtube..http://www.youtube.com/iit
- nemesisrobot, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6*sigh* I wish I could attend Stanford...
- nj10ii, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6Stick with it. Its not really that hard.
Understand branching and looping and you've passed the intro class. - 808ethan, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6Learning for free has been around for a while. Getting CREDIT is what you really pay for. Look at any schools graduation requirements and you will see tons of info about how many classes you need to take (i.e. pay for) at their university to get that magic paper.
- anubis2night, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6Ahhh man I'm so on this thanks Stanford you got my digg!
- mugicha, on 09/19/2008, -1/+7No, you should spend your time playing Guitar Hero and watching Battlestar Galactica reruns. That would be way more helpful than getting a head start on the material you will be studying in college.
- MtheoryX, on 09/19/2008, -3/+8You're not too big on the currently, unfortunate state of employment, are you?
- ry4nsm1th, on 09/19/2008, -2/+7Wait you had a whole class on little endian and big endian? This was covered in less than a minute in my class yesterday.
- MtheoryX, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5@bagboyrebel:
"By undeniable logic"...
