- guillem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hi. I'm the BOFH for meneame.net. I'd like to clarify some points:
1.- The main issue is _not_ the language. The first version (meneame.net) is in Spanish mainly because it's the mother tongue for Ricardo Galli, the Developer, and because we live in Spain. The next version (moume.net) will be in Catalan because everybody here (Balearic Islands) speaks Catalan. Translation is easy, everything is ready, just look at the code. The _code_ (and i do mean the _code_) is in English. You will probably have versions in other languages soon.
2.- The main issue _is_ the license. We have a code base inspired on Digg... but it's Open Source, it's Free Software. We will release versions under the Affero GPL until GPL v3 comes out. With GPL v2 web users don't have the right to get the source code of the services they use, just because they don't receive binaries. We're trying to fix this in advance.
3.- The style you can see in http://meneame.net/ is provisional. The real, and mostly original, CSSs are being developed by our Designer (Benjami Villoslada) and you can see a preview in http://dev.meneame.net/ (keep in mind: that's the pure development version).
4.- Anyway, the style and our particular implementation at meneame.net don't matter. The source code that makes it work (PHP, etc.) does. The site (meneame.net) has AdSense advertisements, but we're not planning to make a huge pile of money, the ads are there just to pay the hosting bills. The real purpose of meneame.net is to develop, test and improve our _free_ source code for an original, _free_ Digg clone. Everybody can use it. We will be glad to see our code used in the Swahili Digg some day :-P - erossetto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think its a good initiative.
1) This doesn't compete with digg at all, its in spanish for god's sake
2) They've openly admit they used digg as inspiration
http://meneame.net/faq-es.php
3) Its open source.
So whats the problem?
I dig it - Marcelo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The code is under GPL...you make your own CSS so you can make it look like whatever you want. This link is for the code only. Long live open source.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You americans assume that all the hundreds of millions of spanish people in the world are the peasent mexicans that mow your lawns. Spanish is spoken in over 40 countries is one of the worlds dominant langauge. As a proud bilingual Ill have to agree with psilvestri, iBRENT.
- benjami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hello everybody out there using digg. I'm Benjamin and I've working in the new graphic design for meneame.net and the near catalan version: moume.net (we are from Majorca island and my first language is catalan, I'm sorry for my english).
We're doing a (free) news website that combines social bookmarking, blogging, RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like digg) for Internet.
This has been brewing since november, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in non-hierarchical editorial control, as our web resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the design (due to practical reasons) among other things).
We've currently ported "digg for stories" and "submit a new story", and things seem to work. This implies that we'll get something practical within a few days, and we'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise we'll implement them :-)
PS. Yes - it's free of any proprietary digg code, and it has a multi-language site. It is protable (uses PHP, MySQL etc), and it probably never will support anything other than web, as that's all we have :-(.
;)) - Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Does anyone care about digg clones?"
Yes, because it's a good idea and not much else. Digg is only unique because it's the first of it's kind, other than that its not much more than another web 2.0 dot comm bubble .2 startup that has a decent idea and not much else. - rocjoe71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Note the duplication is only cosmetic, the gold in this website would be the algorithm that selects the front page stories, you can't get that by copying the site layout.
- Sharky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's cool because it's released under the GPL.
- dukem72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Number of native speakers by language (data from 1999).
1. Chinese* (937,132,000)
2. Spanish (332,000,000)
3. English (322,000,000)
4. Bengali (189,000,000)
5. Hindi/Urdu (182,000,000)
6. Arabic* (174,950,000)
7. Portuguese (170,000,000)
8. Russian (170,000,000)
9. Japanese (125,000,000)
10. German (98,000,000)
11. French* (79,572,000)
So unless Kevin and Co. decide to cater to other languages then Menealo makes sense. Perhaps a bit more troubleshooting and exposure will make Menealo rise to the levels of Digg for people that speaks español.
Pura vida! - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Digg algorithm isn't all that complicated. Its not a search engine algorithm or anything.
- squeeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2from http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/xx.html
Chinese, Mandarin 13.69%
Spanish 5.05%
English 4.84%
Hindi 2.82%
Portuguese 2.77%
Bengali 2.68%
Russian 2.27%
Japanese 1.99%
German, Standard 1.49%
Chinese, Wu 1.21%
(2004 est.)
but I would guess (don't quote me on this) aren't there less native Spanish speakers on the Internet, seeing as big Spanish speaking countries have very bad economies, therefore less people would have access to computers as opposed to those of English speaking countries. If I'm wrong, tell me. - gallir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guys, anonymous votes are now disabled until you learn to read Spanish and stop senseless voting :-)
- datter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I downloaded it and tried it out, seems to work fine though you'd need to create the CSS for it and translate various bits into English. Not sure what the point would be, but it's feasible.
- isilex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think this is great! :)
- torrentado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is there an open source code of the digg comments?
- JackTripper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice. Open source is a good thing.
- Yankidank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The community has developed a site dedicated to adding and improving the code. The code is now known as "Pligg" and can be found at:
http://www.pligg.com/
We are offering support and additional development at http://www.pligg.com/forum - Marcelo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here is a direct link to the source code in case any of you are interested:
http://meneame.net/archives/meneame-src.tgz - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Anyone that praises open source is a hypocrite if they are against other sites using the digg code. Just because digg is the first doesnt mean its the only one, either way meneame isnt competing with digg, as it is geard toward and entirely different audience[those that speak spanish and not english]
THEY EVEN ***** GIVE DIGG CREDIT:
This is translated from the FAQ, and they themselves admit that they are using diggs layout because it is simple and effective. - psilvestri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just one quick note that I noticed on the 'cloned digg' which has not yet shown up here.... del.icio.us has been having serious problems since yahoo aquired it.... has anyone else noticed this?

http://picandopiedras.com/2005/12/14/problemas-con-delicious/ - gallir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> The Spanish Clone = 100% RIP OFF
Urgh??? Only CSS class names are the same, __on purpose__.
Read the code, read the FAQ. The last is in Spanish, but the code is pure PHP "english" code.
BTW, the license is not GPL, but Affero GPL. - zurama, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1I hated the site they are ***** and they sensor you.
- zurama, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1I joined it, because I have two Spanish blogs and I posted just two articles 30 minutes apart and they accused me of spamming. They were both articles criticizing communism and one of them expose Che as a mass murderer, so they just retaliated. They have no idea what freedom of expression means. I think I will stick with digg-people here are way more sophisticated and show way more class even when they are disagreeing with what you wrote.
- sagedude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In all honestly I believe that the only reason digg has become so popular is because of one Kevin Rose of TechTV fame.
1. Get celebrity involved in new site.
2. Find venture capital
3. ??
4. Profit! - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW, I guess I won't have to finish coding http://www.polidiggs.com afterall. It's been sitting there for the past two months after I gave up :-p I would, however, be inclined to shut it down if digg does in fact, like they mentioned to marketwatch, add a politics category to this site.
- zurama, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1I tried and hated it.Meneame-they are *****, they try to discrete you. They suck big time!!!!
- Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1fuimos de diggers a meneadores...
Meneado!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2[Why not just get Google toolbar and have REAL Digg articles automatically translated into any language for you?]
Umm where should I start?
1]translating software sucks
2]translating software sucks
3]translating software sucks - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey at least they freed the code be thankful.
- psilvestri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1menealo muchachos, or for those of you who are mono-lingual - shake it baby! Shake it like a Polaroid picture!
defiantly get a digg AND a menealo! - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're going to rip off a web site, at least make the UI unique. Yeesh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its nice. And good for the spanish speaking community. I'm about 72% sure that Digg is based on drupal cms and SpreadFirefox theme. Its a nice looking and easy to use layout. Looking at the spanish version though, it seems like they started from scratch.
- Yankidank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I completely agree with sagedude. Without a geek celebrity backing up this site it probably wouldn't make it.
I looked through just about every line of code for this thing and it's well written. The instruction links provided in the comment area are pretty useless for anyone who knows basic web scripts and mysql and those who don't know mysql will have a tough time understanding it. I think I will work on a flash tutorial and ask the author for permission to release the code that I edited into an english version. The only problem that I have now are a few settings with link.php since there is no explanation for some of the variables. And by the way, Google is so much better at translating that Babelfish. - dismorfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For me this is good! My first language is Spanish, I read a lot of stuff that I would like to share but I can't do that in Digg. I even sent a e-mail to Digg team to ask them if I can post Spanish article and they don't even bother to contact me saying NO. I'm a Digg fan but this is good for people that don't understand English.
- ignazio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://meneame.net/story.php?id=544
dugg! = meneado! - SubZ3r0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont speak spanish but cause most functions are in english all you have to do is view page find the text you want changed do a search for it and replace it with english translation and use some commen sence its exactly like digg so just use digg as an english reference if you cant figure it out. I am writtin my own script though seems like some work to get it all in english. Personally I dont like dealing with other peoples ploblems just messed with it for a good laugh :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0instructionnnnnnnnssss for installlllllllll
- sinoheR., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet! now i could 'digg' or 'menealo'
- exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0spadin: I have been planning on starting a political site for a long time now which would feature bi monthly columns. I already have some people on board... and I would love to join forces with you.
If you see this, contact me at exoendo@gmail.com, if you are interested.
- Exoendo - snapya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://test.techheaven.net/ < that is what it looks like. BTW i am having problems with seting it up.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@spadin
Don't give up on polidiggs is a cool idea, I blogged it, cheers. - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quit being pansies. I haven't heard any rumors of digg.com trying to dominate the spanish market so there is no conflict by this being made.
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ BTW please contact me snapya @ techheaven . net if you find otu how to do it!
- Binderup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's a great idea. Here in Denmark we have a user centric nerd news site called newz.dk, but it lacks the "Digg" function - I would love for them to copy that function.
Digg.com is nice but it's very US minded, and that's OK as it's a US site - but I could care less about the google features that are only available in the US, AOL, Tivo and so on.
A digg.dk would be use full (at least here in Denmark), so an open source rip off is welcomed. - invoker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0English installation instructions here http://digg.com/programming/How_to_install_open_Source_Digg_code_(Meneame)_
- elfhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha, they even have this article posted on the front page in english
- Gringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This site looks interesting. I agree with the responses that the Spanish speakers need something like this site so they can have access to the information that us English speakers have.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are trying to make a Spanish version of digg so why recode everything when they can use publicly available code? I have not heard any complaints from representatives of digg. For all we know they contacted digg before developing and asked if they could use their code. I see no reason why digg would have a problem with this so if digg isn't complaining why are you?
- mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kevin should really patent the idea- but he didn't say "much" about it on dltv.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works just fine, only took about two minutes to get it up and running. Some nice clean code.

What is Digg?
