- mrmorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A few pointers from the ~45 min. interview:
- Java SE (Hotspot VM and JavaC compiler) to be OS'ed under the OpenJDK projekt on java.net
- SE 7.0 to be OS'ed first, SE6 to follow (SE6 is effectlvely in the can for production)
- License GPV2 a la GNU/Linux with a GNU/Classpath exception to allow linking to non-GPL code.
- GPLv2 chosen due to popularity, compatability and protection (non-public fork not legal)
- Possibility of eventual GPLv3 upgrade when the FSF releases it.
- Easier to distribute runtime as well as SDK with Linux etc.
- Commercial licence policies remain in place. - bdruth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is an excellent podcast, from an excellent group of Java developers. If you're a Java developer, Sun's move to Open Source Java has been the big news for 2006 (besides GWT, that's pretty big, too ;-)). High marks for this, check it out!
- Rustbucket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Three of the biggest guys in the Java industry are on this podcast, a much listen! It'll be interesting to see how this affects companies like IBM that have their own flavor of the JVM.
- rajaryan4all, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This podcast is a must for anyone interested in Java OS initiative. This is much more informative than so many duplicate articles out there. Very good podcast and very timely.

IBM has also just open sourced WebSphere JEE application Server, as a "Community Edition". I hope this will get others (e.g. Microsoft) to start contributing to the open source community.
- DFarisPhD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1many thanks of course to the hard-working ppl at sun and the awesome folks at javaposse for participating and making this podcast available to all. any chance of posting patent-free and open-licensed ogg vorbis (http://www.vorbis.com/) files of the "podcast" mp3's .. joke ;-)
sun/james gosling have also made open-letter and two-part q&a available; great reading, especially part-2 of the q&a. have a look .. and lets all wish dr gosling a speedy and healthy recovery and thank him for his tireless efforts.

I think anyone who listens to the podcast will realize that we deal with some questions that none of the "me too" articles out there are talking about, so getting buried as a dupe was a bit of a disappointment. I don't actually know what this means now, but I am guessing that after being buried there is no way to reverse that and make it to the front page. Does anyone know any better.
It's a real shame, I think some of the discussion about what the reaction might be from Apache Harmony, or the details about how to download and build the source, would have been of interest to a tech-heavy crowd like that on Digg. - corporate70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To bad Websphere is awful when compared to Weblogic and JBoss. Maybe the community edition will change this.

What is Digg?
