- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It doesn't get much press, but I think the Developer Works series of articles on IBM's website does a lot to help drive the adoption and use of open-source software, much like the O'Reilly books. I like how low-profile IBM's FOSS efforts are.
- sc0tt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You can quite easily serve an XML file via a .php extension file. All you'd need to do is change the content type header. Telling Apache to handle all .xml files will make it force any .xml file through php, which would cause a slow down if you serve enough .xml files :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6RSS Ubiquitous? I don't think so!
From recent Nielsen survey.
66% No idea what RSS is
23% Know what it is but don't use it
11% (At most) use RSS and not all of them regularly.
Now this was also a survey of BLOG READERS... who technically you would guess are more internet savvy than the vast majority of web users who 'Just check their mail and a couple of news/hobby sites'
Seriously RSS is the technology that never was. It's a dead duck - sc0tt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree with that, I think they've gone about it the right way, and it's an extremely handy reference point.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For parsing RSS feeds you should be using an existing library like Simplepie or Magpie. Generating RSS should be done the same way. Don't reinvent the wheel if you have a project that needs this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So get the word out. I use RSS regularly and seeing how many sites continue to add it, I feel justified in making that the only way I interface with the Internet.
No I would not guess that blog readers are more tech savvy. After all, you have people that read MySpace in that mix. - suckrpnch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't be surprised if some of the 80% who don't know what RSS is, are actually using it and just don't realize the technology behind it.
But you are right in the sense that this doesn't have to be the defacto technology, some people don't like it, but have just decided that it is too late to change, when it doesn't have to be. - SilverRocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not unlike the whole "push" content hype of 96/97 when that was supposed to revolutionize the internet... http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/5.03/ff_push_pr.html
- Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm afraid you are wrong. RSS Syndication is actually an unnecessary redundant tautology which had needless repetition of the same sense in different words.
- amikael9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good article, digged!

- myrmidon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The phrase "RSS Syndication" is redundant, because guess what the final 'S' in the acronym stands for....
And no, you did not plug your ethernet cable into a "NIC card" to connect to the Internet, either. - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Thats some lame ass way.
I just wrote my page in php, made a .htaccess to tell Apache to handle .xml as .php, and then bob's your uncle, instant pheed.
