- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+70i'm tempted to convert a screenshot of a website, just for the irony
- Vltava, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17DeGraeve's image to ASCII generator is much more creative, in my opinion.
http://www.degraeve.com/img2txt.php - bubut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Welcome to planet Earth. Hard to believe, but it is more than just America you dolt.
(and yes, I'm an American) - Zenithan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Buried for using non-American spelling? Wow, bigotry at its finest.
- inkyblue2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12it's so clever! it's like the opposite of compression.
- bscene, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10sure it's color if you speak bastardized english
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10And I thought round corners with HTML was cool
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10welcome to the internet ...
- haski, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11It's not useful at all.
- diagonalfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6As if that helps when we're talking about an online app that runs on the server. Mirrors ain't gonna work, buddy.
- DeathBorn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Please check to see if the site is running on a tiny little server before posting it on Digg.
- sonofa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4What about for posting images in forums that allow html, but do not allow images?
- Dwonis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The site seems to be down. If you already have it in your browser window, please take a screenshot and post it here
... converted to HTML, preferably. - MrMighty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Hmm, made something similar some time ago: http://www.chchchanges.com/htmlimage/
- trippinlikegod, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I could waste more if the site wasn't down ;)
- WhiteIce89, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7i'm starting to think that this is how that whole "drawing with HTML" front page article was made. i feel defrauded :
- astyanax, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6If by 'Probably how the "Crazy guy can draw using HTML!!!"' you mean does it use the same capability of HTML, then yes. If you mean the guy took this shortcut you are dead wrong. The video clearly shows him copying and pasting many, many lines of HTML to create the image row by row. It was quite impressive, and this shortcut should not take anything away from his creation, in fact it should make you appreciate that work even more.
- Disjunto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yeah, you come across those every day
- manatee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://neil.fraser.name/scripts/img2html.pl?img=i12.tinypic.com%2F6geb1ap.gif&cmd=Convert
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Or you can just load the image in gimp, select save, and pick "HTML Table" as the file type. It's been in there for a long time.

OS X app for converting pics to html - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4i tried, but it doesnt really handle images much larger than 100x100
- smex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Neil is a smart guy. Have you seen his other software? http://neil.fraser.name/software/
- selkie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I wonder how long till the spammers catch on...

call me when it's W3C compliant. - rspeed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3useless!
- Grumps, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Didnt we create image to get rid of codes? Why are we going backwards?
- petercooper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It probably won't make a /significant/ difference if it only does RLE (rather than doing entire 2 dimensional 'blocks', say).
- eporra, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, I think there is more to it than that. I am thinking this could be another way of preventing hotlinking, i.e. people linking directly to images hosted in your server sucking your bandwidth without giving you any credit.
- Sagags, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4http://neil.fraser.name/scripts/img2html.pl?img=http%3A%2F%2Ftech.cybernetnews.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2006%2F07%2FDiggLogo.jpg&cmd=Convert
- GeneralSun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I love innovators like this, taking small steps that could potentially open doors.
- evancalkins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's kind of cool if you view the page with no styling: your image is converted into a giant black and white version made with broken images.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+3Damn it.. Digg killed it before I could do an image of Scarlett Johansson to show everyone how well it worked.
- dragonlink2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5http://neil.fraser.name/scripts/img2html.pl?img=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.digg.com%2Fimg%2Flittle-digg.gif&cmd=Convert
doesn't handle .pngs with transparenty too well, but that's probably expected - dacheetah, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Well, "British English" was born in England, hence being called English. It was then mutilated, and given an adjective, "American English".
Imagine Sony took the iPod, changed it a bit, but kept it similar enough that a normal iPod user could still use it without any major re-learning, and then called it the Sony iPod. How many current iPod owners would consider the Sony iPod just as proper? - Nadinengland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Isn't the little-digg.gif a .gif? I mean i'm not trying to be sarcastic but still...
- pezholio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Clever, but I'm not sure how comfortable I am with the use of tables for non-tabular data
- mr040, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The script has been shot dead. Try downloading the source and running it for yourself instead :)
- woogley, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2it is pretty clever, it's even using RLE.
though, I doubt it would display very quickly if the image being converted didn't have any "flat" color patterns like the tux image does - Taorluath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1giving us a link won't work. It uses 'post' which means you can just put it in the URL
- joshaidan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Definately a feature of Web 3.0.
- dAbReAkA, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2http://neil.fraser.name/scripts/img2html.pl?img=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hollywood-celebrity-pictures.com%2FCelebrities%2FJessica-Alba%2FJessica-Alba-226.JPG&cmd=Convert
lol :) it's scaling it down :( - ferggo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This guy also has a lot of very useful tools on his site.
For anyone who is into MOO's, he has a MOO database browser that is really awesome.
If you don't know what a MOO is, you should really find out. They are awesome
I'll save you the 15 seconds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOO - philippbock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Doesn’t matter, Duggmirror caught it ;)
- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ooh, I like yours better.
Anyone with a bit of programming knowledge can make this, really.
You just need creative ideas. - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1...also, the video shows him making good use of row- and colspans to cut down on the amount of code for large blocks of colour, so even if he *was* using some automated process, it sure wasn't this one.
- mr040, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sounds like an even better solution ;) Especially as I fend off the DDoS that is digg!
- keyo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Validation for the tux image....
Result: Failed validation, 17470 errors
File: img2html.htm - Jellybob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0It is tabular data - it just so happens that the data that needs to be stored is a collection of colour values, rather then pieces of text.
Although lets face it, I think as abuses of HTML go, this is one of the more horrific (but ingenious) ones I've seen :P -
