- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27They'll call it MSDN... No wait.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22In other news, Microsoft still can't construct a website.
- echoic, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15What the ***** are you talking about? MS has one of the most thriving developer communities I've encountered. They host, totally free developer events all over the world on top of MSDN and public newsgroups.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10While being the biggest, they are losing developers to Linux and Mac OS X. I remember an article on digg that discussed why developers were switching platforms. As of right now however, Windows still has the most developers when it comes to desktop platforms.
- Gronkk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's slow though.
I really can't understand those "new" websites that Microsoft have been building lately. They seem to take forever to load. - condorhauck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I expect to see a lot of .NET projects on here. You don't really see that many on Source Forge (by comparison). Code Project has a few, but I think this site could eventually see a lot of use because MS can plug it from the Visual Studio .NET start page and such.
- ozziegt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This isn't open source. It's sharing code. Big difference.
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9so, now, open source is no longer the work of the devil?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Theres a wetpaint one as well, http://www.webcrave.wetpaint.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"MS has some of the smartest people in the world working for them. I guess it's your loss."
I hear people say that all the time, yet they don't create anything that is amazing, and I have yet to meet some one from MS that made me say "wow that guy is smart".
My real world experience doesn't jive with your fantasy - macko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Codeplex has been in beta testing for sometime and being that it's basically gotdotnet version 2, which has been around for a while as well, I wouldn't consider this a new idea for Microsoft. It's a natural progression of things. It's a way for them to share development of different projects with the community, such as Atlas Toolkit and IronPython. Many of you are knocking it, but I've been using it, and am finding it very use-able and useful.
- BrewedInTexas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm pretty sure you mean OSI not OSDL. (http://www.opensource.org)
And for the record Microsoft's shared source license is not OSI approved.
Shared Source != Open Source - seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16Isn't it too cute to see Microsoft trying to be cool like all the other kids. Look they are trying to share. This is truly a sign that Microsoft is trying to change or making a last ditch effort to not completely disenfranchise their developer community.
- jmacdonagh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Judging by the quality of these comments, I see that most people have no idea what this is for. It is a replacement for Gotdotnet, but it's built on top of Team Foundation Server.
So you get to use all the cool features of Team Foundation Server (think subversion with added features), for community projects. They give you all the required client stuff, and you just connect to their servers. - Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is the site, btw: http://www.codeplex.com/
I searched for a couple things and they all just said "This is the future home of Such-and-Such Project." I expected to have categories or something to search in, but there's not... just one search box. - rprouse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And for Windows specific code, a huge repository of code at http://www.codeproject.com
Rather than constantly re-invent the wheel (often poorly, gotta love square wheels :) and make developers hunt through dozens of sites, why not work with the community? Financial support, mirroring, hosting or hardware would go a lot further than another website. - AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2'AJAX technology' LOL oh wait no, it's 'Web 2.0'
- Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ASP.NET. Reigning in the runaway broadband.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How does "Sharing Code" not equal "Open Source"? Are they conditionally sharing it? Sign a lease? Sell your soul?
"Shared Source" is just Microsoft-speak for "Open Source" (because they can't say "Open Source" after repeatedly condeming its practices). It might not fit the OSDL definition of Open Source, but it definitely is. (OSDL has certain guidelines on how the code should be made available, ala "Free Software", whereas Open Source could literally mean just about any situation where the code is open for public viewership).
So no, you probably won't see the GPL on any of the code on Microsoft's site, but you'll still see BSD-like and variants, MIT-like and variants, etc. - pyalot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Look clearly M$ has no clue. codeplex is lame just to browse and look at.
http://trac.edgewall.com is a much better ticketing system, bugtracker, sourcecode browser etc. There's tons of sucessfull projects using it right now. http://sf.net is a very popular sharing site.
None of those has all the hassle codeplex has.
Geeze can't they just admit defeat without putting up pathethic websites? - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Created great programming languages?
C# is a clone of Java on top of a clone of its framework. That's not creation.
I hope you're not going to argue that MS created C, C++, or Java.
Likewise, I hope you're not going to argue that Visual Basic is great... - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5sharing code != open source
This will be a huge benifit to the developer community. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"MS has some of the smartest people in the world working for them. I guess it's your loss."
Pretty sure they lost most of those guys to Google during the great IPO braindrain.
Microsoft does have some very intellegent people working for them, but the problem overall is they can't express any of that intellegence due to poor management on Microsoft's behalf, which is overwhelmingly apparent in Vista. Great ideas all around, but none of them coming to full fruition simply because developers can't finish what they're working on, either because they're being moved and juggled around so much, or because they're being fired and hired and nobody can read the previous guy's code. It's a crying shame MONAD and WinFS aren't going to be in Vista, as in my own opinion these would have been the saving grace of innovation for Microsoft. Instead they're releasing a half-baked remake of Project Looking Glass that uses twice the GPU power. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They're not sharing their source code. They're setting up a community so that developers can share their source code...did you even read the article?
- macko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's because most of the projects are from the community.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3sharing code does not means its open source.
- SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Paranoid conspiracy theorist says:
That's just a typo...
What the article means to say is that Microsoft is launching a site where YOU share YOUR source code with them. Then Microsoft will use it's army of TEMPS to stitch together some kind of program from all the snippets of submitted code, and sell it's new program at stores for $200 for the Home Edition, and $500 for the Enterprise Edition. And then secretly patent the source code for the new program, and SUE anyone who uses the code they submitted. - MonTemplar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*Chuckle*
- coastie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yes but it's still sharing source code.
- remiprev, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4And http://krugle.com
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And the upstart code wiki: http://www.codecodex.com/
- mercano, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5A launch-code sharing site? Is this so smaller nations that don't normally have access to nuclear arms can borrow ours? Doesn't seem like the best idea, what with the big deal everyone is making over Iran and North Korea.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i don't like it when people bring up the "steal other's ideas" argument....why? Because it shows a lack of intelligence when I was actually expecting some...i hate disappointment.
MS created great programming languages that are very powerful and widely used. There are several websites out there that allow developers to share code and ideas and now finally Microsoft is going to create one.
I supposed people are going to bring up the topic of "open source" and will compare Microsoft to trying to be like Linux. This is nothing like them trying to be open source. This is Microsoft trying to produce innovation between developers through a programming community. - fishhits, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Who knows maybe Microsoft will also create a digg look alike. Hint "Windows Digg".
- echoic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5no, just communists.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7seanmc303 is just another kid who has no clue...
- YouKnowHim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I recently have began learning to program (somewhat) with Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition which is FREE, YES FREE, and you know what else you MS flamers the whole Visual Studio is literally free now http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/ , so we all can stop complaining about ANY software and just go and make our own programs.
- Trumpi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Microsoft release a code stealing^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hsharing site...
- amirjpl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1microsoft can't and never will be able to make a good website. but they are microsoft so the .NET people flock to them.
- amirjpl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am hearing things about a website that will blow all these code sharing sites out of the water, and will create a new way for developers to program. I am not supposed to go into detail.
- mukund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Another group of Microsoft haters. Lolz. I feel like laughing. Come on guys. Do something productive rather then just hating them. I know they are to be hated... but why repeat it on every digg thread. OK that Microsoft is evil. So lets move on guys. :) Leave them alone. Lets not waste time laughing and hating the. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, they'll call it ThePirateBay.
At least, that's where everyone I know goes to share their "Microsoft code". - treak007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1good to see M$ finally catching up to the rest of the net
- coastie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why is it that Microsoft is last in line to get with the sharing of source code. Unfortunately I am forced to use Windows XP at work, I would feel much more comfortable if I could be using Linux. Is there a bigger monopoly than M.S., why would non-M.S. developers want to play with M.S. on an open source thing when that source will more than likely end up in something that is proprietary?
- webtweakers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hm, look but don't touch?! :|
- biiscit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6@echoic: i was thinking the same thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5The code will come with a new license too, it simply says:
Microsoft 8=> ( | ) You
(Kidding) - pedrotuga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lo, that's true... Microsoft now is trying to put its feet on the open source community... who said they are welcome.
Like somebody said... new Microsoft code stealing site.
The site looks great and much more advanced practical than sourceforge, but despite that windows platform sux, so let them have a great site, i am not developing anything on it because their platform is simply not reliable.
Also, open source means open source... not... well-you-code-and-share-we-take-the-profit-if-any. No thanks... afterbeing so closed and trying to put down all opponents using the lowest strategies and no ethical principles now they want to be recognized as good fellows that help sort-of-open-source-projects... I myself prefer to code for the devil in that case. - johnnykelley, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I don't think it would be a healthy thing to borrow any code from Microsoft...
Just isn't something I'd see as necessary or safe... -
