- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+58Damn, I was hoping it was Flying Circus Python.
- IEatEmoKids, on 10/11/2007, -3/+54Wouldn't be complete without the bash quote.
someone speak python here?
HHHHHSSSSSHSSS
SSSSS
the programming language - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+50well that was easy. I think I'll master rocket science next in my lunch break.
- opitica, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44"This tutorial will attempt to teach you Python in 10 minutes."
Key word: attempt.
Key outcome: failure. - Obligation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+40Buried as inaccurate, I'm not a master of Python.
- moRGL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2710 years --> 21 days --> 24 hours --> 10 minutes --> Are we getting smarter?
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -2/+28Oh God, now we're reduced from '21 Days' to '10 Minutes'?
- chrisinsocalif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Ha ha I thought it was the Monty Python at first also!
"I don't want to go on the cart!" - iWasHere, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Be sure to read the first comment at the bottom of the page.
- Narwaffle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Title should probably read "Master the Basics of Python in 10 minutes", but it was generally well explained and easy to grasp.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18"So, you want to learn the Python.."
no - kunalthakar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years by Peter Norvig
http://norvig.com/21-days.html - HiddenForce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Perhaps in the future, we can master things in 10 seconds...
"I know Kung Fu!"
"Show me." - captnkurt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10On the plus side, the tutorial was concise and informative.
On the minus side, the jack that jacks directly into the back of my head is really uncomfortable.
Oh, and I also now know Kung Fu. - egrefen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8These "Master X in 24hrs/24minutes/whatever" sites are genuinely *****. Anyone having done any degree of programming knows that it takes between a few days and a few months to get comfy with a new language, depending on how well versed in similar languages one is, and the difficulty of the language. A python expert will take a few days to feel on top of things with Ruby; a C programmer will take a week or two to familiarise themselves with awk; and someone having dabbled in fortran (or new to programming) might take a while (few months, few years?) to get the hang of Java or C++.
When it comes to cramming through the basics of python, I'd highly recommend Mark Pilgrim's "Dive into Python" ( http://diveintopython.org/toc/index.html ), a free (GPL) online ebook which is, I found, most excellent for getting acquainted with Python in the shortest time possible. It has helpful pointers, comparisons and contrasts with other common languages, links to other guides and resources at the end of each section (for further reading), and best of all: it's concise, cogently written, and clear as I like 'em. And, of course, it comes with loads of examples and sample programs.
It only took me a few days to read through it during my free time, check the extra material, and write a few test programs of my own. This is pretty good, given I'm not much of a programmer (being a lowly physicist), so I'm sure most of the tech-proficient digg readers will find it most rewarding.
That said, this article was a pretty good read to refresh my memory aboput some things. - sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+77 minute abs!
- Kelmon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Indeed. It comes to something when a "Master Python" headline makes you think that the article will teach you some killer Silly Walks. Shame...
- IbnDigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Google Cache got it if you still want it :)

- jtb4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6This hour I am mastering Python, C++, .Net, Java, Perl and Assembly. After lunch I think I'll invent a new language and name it .Jymbly ++
- Nutmegan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Actually, I'm rather enjoying this site, your downward digging notwithstanding.
- FlohEinstein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5http://bash.org/?780063
python is pretty easy to learn
you write pseudocode, and you indent it correctly :) - KyleGoetz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Agreed. The beginning of the article says "it will just show you some basic concepts to start you off." This is completely different from "mastering" the language.
- rastakid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6No, our programming skills are getting worse. But I wish you could master anything in 10 minutes. On the other hand, that wouldn't make a certain skill not half as interesting to other people.
- mentol, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7This is for sure Bull.
You can't learn something as big and as complex as Python (not the snake) in only 10 hours. (Bury) - zeblith, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Well I think the key word in the description is "attempt"...
- BrainCoder, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Mastering python takes more than 10 minutes...that tutorial can give you only basics.
Being a c-syntax like scripting language doesn't mean to be easy. Python is powerful. BitTorrent client is written in Python, for example. Google uses Python, Youtube too. And also NASA. Python rocks. - websyndicate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4he must be talking about self gratification because actually learning python takes 11 minutes
- richardiscool, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4What if someone comes up with 6-minute abs?
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Although, Python the language is actually named after the Python of Flying Circus, rather than of the amazon.
- Poromenos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6To be fair, I never said you could master python in 10 minutes. The submitter did. This tutorial serves only to give you a taste of the language so you can quickly begin learning it by writing programs.
- fmorel90, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is for people who already know programming. All it does is explain the syntax.
- cope, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3but some of us prefer girls Yaroslav
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4i swear I had to read the title about 4 times before it stopped saying "monty python in 10 minutes"
- Wahngrok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Or more killer jokes for that matter.
- xSpittyx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Maybe not in 10 hours, but apparently you can in 10 minutes.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2even then they still completely leave out anything related to Introspection, which is one of the key features of the language beyond syntactic sugar.
- bysubmitted, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5NO ONE EXPECTS the Spanish Inquisition!
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Edit: Well, indentation doesn't work on Digg, here's another:
Ash - look: I like python pretty well, but the syntax is kind of annoying.
AaronSw - this from a lisp programmer?!
Ash - AaronSw: One type of brace is much simpler than a bazillion!
AaronSw - to write perhaps, but not to rfead
Ash - Lisp's syntax is simple and efficient.
Ash - With a proper editor, lisp is incredibly easy to read.
look - OK, let's pretend we got past the syntax argument
look - It's now 45 minutes in the future
ook - and we've agreed to disagree
look - Hurray!
AaronSw - I bet look's time machine is programmed in Python. /ducks - QuorumCall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Site's kinda slow, here's a cache,
http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:eTtQMEjM3KgJ:www.poromenos.org/tutorials/python+http://www.poromenos.org/tutorials/python&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=opera - rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8Or you could do yourself a favor and try ruby for 15mins ( in your browser)
http://tryruby.hobix.com/ - KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I definitely saw "Monty Python" before I realized. I believe this is because of the brain's method of recognizing words and phrases by their size and shape rather than their character make-up.
- BrainCoder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/tinyp2p.html
Pseudocode? - bspender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's not rocket surgery.
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Python is usually pretty useful. Never done anything really big with it, but its bountiful libs make doing little one-offs pretty simple.
- wedesoft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The problem is that it already takes 8 minutes to load the site. 2 minutes left now ...
- HairyFotr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This site is great! I think more languages should have this kind of tutorial.
- Poromenos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It took you four tries to copy a print statement? :P
- Isolder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm starting to enjoy all the duped articles these days, if I miss an article one day I'll be sure to see a dupe the next!
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1buried this story as inaccurate. it took me 20 minutes although 7 of those were just getting python installed..
