( Sorry....I've had acquaintances with both languages and I know that joke is insulting. It is like comparing a porsche to a pinto ). - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thith thound like the greatetht idea ever!
- gwking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm a long time Lisper and it's a beautiful language; dive in, you might love it. Oh, as for all those parenthesis -- don't worry about 'em.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lisp has interested me for 2 years, but I have been fearful of not being able to get the hang of it after failing to learn clisp from "ansi common lisp" by P graham. I have toyed with some schemes in the last year, and have now begun to learn some of this seemingly cool language that can apparently make short work of even huge problems. Rock on lispers, and try unbanning me from irc on freenode so I can ask some mroe dumb questions!
- pthierry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a danger in Lisp: you might not want to use any other language anymore! (FWIW, that happened to me)

Although it may appear strange to you if it isn't your first programming language, it is phenomenally simpler than the complex syntax of a language like Java or C++, enabling you to focus on learning the powerful ideas behind the Lisp family of languages. If you think Lisp looks weird, it’s only because you learned something else first, so just give it a little time to become familiar to you.
I highly recommend learning at least some Common Lisp or Scheme to gain a broader perspective on programming. It will make you a better programmer no matter what language you use.
You may also find Dylan interesting (www.opendylan.org). It's another Lisp-family language, but it has an Algol/Pascal/Ada-like syntax that may make it more approachable to people who find they just can’t get past the unfamiliarity of s-expressions.
