- robb.monn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm just guessing here, but I don't think that you went the whole way through why's book. It actually is a pretty sophisticated programming book that completely covers the language. He starts out slow, but so do most programming books: The Pragmatic Programmer's Ruby book is actually paced in a similar way.
Why is an absurdly smart person and everyone should take a few minutes to appreciate that he is giving away this free, wonderful book. - IndianGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6We run the PuneRuby (Ruby User Group based in Pune, India) that has now over 375 members. The growth in the number of jobs and projects in Ruby and Rails has grown exponentially over the months. Almost all software companies here are building something using Rails.
- jopsen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why’s (Poignant) Guide to Ruby is a cool book, definitively fun to read... At least if you have a somewhat crazy humor....
But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's familiar with normal programming terminology, it's simplify too basic, which makes it harder to understand if you HAVE done some programming before...
Anyway for people who has never tried programming before, it's a good start to ruby... And it's a book like no others, that's for sure... - bloodmoney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Chunky bacon!
- redwire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nice timing I started learning Ruby yesterday myself :)
Dugg - harshad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A nice example oriented guide to the Ruby language.
- OhJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Would it have killed the story submitter to spend ten measly seconds on the text blurb instead of blindly copy pasting bits and pieces from the site? It's completely mangled and broken English.
- Eleo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have experience with programming languages such as C, C++, C#, and Java, and am by no means an expert at any of them; I mostly use them to code small apps that do stuff that no other app does.
I purchased the "Programming Ruby" book by Dave Thomas, often referred to by Ruby programmers as "Pickaxe". Maybe I'm a moron but I can't understand a lot of concepts such as blocks. They're unusual, which is part of the problem, but I don't think the book explains these concepts very well. Probably the biggest problem I've had with most programming tutorials is they're not practical; they tell you how to do stuff but don't tell you when you would want to or when you should do that stuff, or sometimes the examples are so obscure that you just can't relate.
So far I have yet to read any tutorial on Ruby that actually clicks. So right now I'm doing Rails stuff and I don't even totally understand how Ruby works.
Maybe I don't have the IQ for it, I dunno. - keitho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@idioticBug
firefox w/ noscript blocks the left nav. i had the same issue. you have to allow netclime.net and you can get around. - IndianGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You should check the TIOBE Index every month. This month's headlines is: Ruby and D are the hot languages of today. See:
http://www.tiobe.com/ - agentVivid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"ruby on rails" sounds like a burnt-out hooker with a coke habit
- IndianGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The left-side menu on this Learning Ruby site, will not load if you have the Google Toolbar installed in your Firefox browser.
- Bonekhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Everything "Modules" and downward says "coming soon". Pssh....
- IndianGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To overcome this, you should add sitekreator.com in your toolbar settings and also add *.netclime.net (not netclime.com) as a zone with allowed access.

Ruby is seeing growing usage in the corporate world, and is a great language to learn programming concepts through. I mean, check Dice:

255 job reqs isn't alot, but it doesn't make Ruby not a worthwhile endeavor. - yogastore, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0http://astore.amazon.com/calphalon.commercial-20

Nope, waste of time. My advice is stick with .NET. Java and PHP. - slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3Durka durka, Mohammed jihad!
