- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+156Wrong, he never tells you how to make cool midi music for your keygen.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Well, most software just use an executable packer that is fairly generic and can usually be unwrapped fairly easily by someone (more skilled than me).
The most fun I ever had deprotecting was with a dongle protection (for a highly-specialized graphics application worth $50,000 ) back in the mid-90s. The company bought the software legitimately, but had to use it in a few different locations around the city throughout the day, and didn't want to spend the time (or risk the hardware) transporting dongles around (and the software was never in use at two locations at once, so I figured it wasn't a big issue).
Simply reversing one assembly jump command deprotected the software (and had the fun added bonus of preventing the software from running IF the dongle was plugged in - which was a fun ironic twist I put in, rather than just taking the routine out completely). Of course, if they had written the routine properly, it would've taken some dongle emulation code to do the same thing, but they didn't, so... - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20i believe most keygen music is in MOD or XM format and rarely midi.

- Rmplstltskn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Do you mind if I forward you all my spam?
- project2501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14No, but...
0x0 + 0x31 + 0x60 + 0x93 = 0x0124 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Here is a mirror to Fravia's stuff, http://woodmann.com/fravia/index.htm
I liked reading his stuff, still do in fact. He has a new site now http://www.searchlores.org/ which can also be reached at http://www.fravia.com/.
For anyone interested. - Rmplstltskn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14So don't dig it.
- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14props for the phrozen crew post though. old school.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I went to college with a member of the phrozen crew, he was like 50 years old and used to stare at all the college chicks all day, but he could crack anything and anytime I asked for software he'd have a CD for me the next day... does anyone know what happened to the phrozen crew?
- flake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It seems to be a well written tutorial
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10While he does sound angry, he isn't exactly wrong. If you understand asm & using a disassembler effectively enough to understand this site, you would already know how to do this, in which case you wouldn't be reading this. Almost a classic catch 22.
- scheper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The tutorial is somewhat out of date though. Most software now use encrypted executables and advanced debugger detection.
- illt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9if it's a small program, and you use it often and find worthwhile, why not pay the small fee.
- dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i disagree. i think that information like this, especially since it's quite outdated, is more useful as general information. most people that digg this and read it aren't going to run out and try to make a keygen, instead they are going to scan it and see what they can learn from it.
for example, if i was a programmer with some software that i was selling, i would gain a good understanding of how people could crack my code. this information would allow me to code a better, more secure program. yes, it could be used for evil - but it could be used to protect just as well.
i think it's a great article, perfect for digg. - heff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11i bet digging this story violates the DMCA. I can almost hear the footsteps of the s.w.a.t. teams now...
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6PWNd
- flake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4True enough, but there's still plenty out there that are de-protected rather trivialy, even the ones that use dongles
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There used to be a _great_ site (Fravia's) that had lots and lots of tutorials for assembly programming and analyzing protections. It's gone now (aside from a few mirrors that seem to survive), but it was a great read and I learned a ton from it. Worth looking for if such things interest you.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thanks, I've always wondered how the things work. Of course, the article seems to be extremely technical but I've gotten a better idea.
I always figured that serials were created by a proprietary and guarded generation algorithm and keygen makers were reverse-engineering it. How many crackers do you think actually work for Adobe or whatever, the producer of the software they're cracking? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@Metabolife: Keygen music is generally XM or MOD, like DigeratiPrime said. Plus, they have special people who create the music.
You want some music? head over to www.pouet.net
its got loads of oldskool stuff. :) - ShaDoWwork, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5you can learn what ever you i want i have lerant heaps over the years and still have much to learn.
reserch is all you need and some time and effort.
as stated this is a dated tut but still if you are interested worth the read. - bdr529, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yeah that artical is a little outdated. key algorithm are hidden a lot better now and programmers are getting smarter. this is the kinda stuff that got me real interested in reverse engineering back in the day. tought myself assembly and everything. i remember when i cracked snood and made my own no-cd crack for quake 2, i thought i was so 1337.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just for an extra measure of tedium lets port the key gen alogrithm to brainf*ck.
- UberFuzzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not nearly as many as you think.

- solvable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3'reserch is all you need and some time and effort.'
Agreed fully. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hmm, publishing the disassembled code from WinZip could get their asses sued. Well-written article though. Shows that you're better off using public key cryptography. It doesn't save you from having a jump patched over but it does allow you to embedd the user's name in the key somewhere and know that nobody will be creating a new key without your private key. Thus only a patch will suffice, and expect to get a trojan/mallware installed after running that as well.
- leohart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not only so, it is THE BEST reason why one should take Assembly Language in college.
- bdr529, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 fravia's site was amazing. it seemed like this huge subculture that i was missing out on. i found it a little late in its life though. the fraviamb was the first forum i ever used.
- elcaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree, Fravia's site was the best.. I learned a LOT of basic cracking stuff from that site, thanks to which I was able to create my own dongle crack for a structural eng gsoftware which i wanted to use "for educational purposes" only. ;)
- solvable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'Training session 34: Keygen Creation #2'
Could you provide a link to #1 aswell? - SEThofMONROVIA, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1ME NEITHER!!!!
- SP534, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1:O So rather than paying the people that worked hard to MAKE the program, you'd pay someone else to write a keygen for it?
Just....no. - matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lawl
- LtngStlkr, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Dead link, Bury!
- Bleakvoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having coded ASM before (System 370/390, though, not x86), this was actually interesting to me...made me remember the time in class I made the prof look like an ass when he couldn't figure out an encryption scheme I was using. Heh...good times.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think something similar was already mentioned on digg.com
Oh well! Newer news is always better!
+digg for our naughty needs - aabenraa, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1deadlink .Bury
- BlackHatFerret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Allright first thing first. CORE is the best damn keygen team ever they released ton of stuff im talking 10,000 of releases yearly! Plus they got the most kick ass chiptunes or as you call it "keygen music" you can actually make your own if your good chiptunes used to be made from the tunes the chip made like on a Amiga 64 use a compiler like Milkyway or search google w/e works for you...
- Bigheadbud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that I basically understand how the internet works. If you guys want some software with hacks just ask.
- slavik19, on 02/13/2008, -0/+0how do you read it nothing to read. what do you have to clikc?
- dilhangeeth, on 03/31/2009, -0/+0me too where is it????
- hbkshow, on 10/26/2008, -0/+0how to open this link or how to digg it if i click digg it says already dugg
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@bluephoenix:
That guy sounds like the epitome of a 1337 hax0r. Knows what he's doing with a computer, can get anything he wants from the internet, can't get a girl (then again, being younger than 50 would probably help with that a bit). - dr4gunz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0where's the link to the tutorial?
- shabuj2002, on 01/18/2008, -0/+0very good lesson
- georgepowell, on 12/13/2008, -0/+0HA! That made me laugh! I'm not bothered about pirating software, but if it has not been cracked yet, then just buy it mate!
It must be an expensive program for you to be willing to pay for a cracked version. What program is it? - euro22, on 12/17/2008, -1/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
- destroyer6589, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey can anyone link or tell me a program or some sort of idea on how to make keygen type music as explained earlier that guy said the tut dosent say thanks!
and i folowed the link to check again and it didnt seem to have anything it just had a bunch of ads -
