Uh, that's actually 10 words.
Nonetheless I'm glad to see Smooth Gallery getting updated. It looks much better than the way it did a few months ago. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18"16kb is not lightweight"
It is when you consider that the Scriptaculous/Prototype/Lightbox combo weighs in at something like 300kb+.
I mean come on, 16kb is nothing unless you're on dial-up. And even on dial up, that's a one-time delay of ~4 seconds (the js files are cached after that). And on dial-up that's not even going to be noticeable. :D - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17It's called the "Russian Reversal", I've yet to see a single person on Digg perform the joke properly.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Uh, that 16KB can be loaded by a 56k user in under 3 seconds. That 16KB is cached and not fetched on every page request.
I used to write all of my own JavaScript effects because of the fact that there were NO lightweight effects or AJAX classes out there. As soon as I heard about Moo.fx, I gave it a try and never looked back. Since Mootools, I've now switched because it gives me almost everything I need in an incredibly lightweight package. Hell, Mootools' special download system allows you to select what scripts you want to download and give them a varying level of compression. The full package with everything included is under 40KB! Tell me that is not lightweight, considering you get classes and extensions for everything from strings and arrays to JSON and AJAX.
Now, as for the topic at hand, it looks like a pretty cool, basic gallery. However, it is SURPRISINGLY well-written. Most of the time, these so-called web developers thinking using some AJAX framework makes them godlike coders.
This guy actually uses classes efficiently and leaves little inline scripting on the page. It seems like it should be very easy to use, even for the novice.
This gallery can definitely go places, considering this is only the first release. - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@cinnix: yeah, you need a slashdotter to use the joke properly...and even then, it's stupid.
- CoolGoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is great. You should try it. Good job Jon.
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"16kb is not lightweight".
Yes it is. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Loads for me.
- livejamie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4gotta love mootools
- hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Well, yes, it's not one word.
Do I get a GOLD STAR? - sgarrity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4An example of this gallery in use: http://www.foresightlinux.com/screenshots/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I mirrored the download file.
http://www.alex-marchuk.com/digg/SmoothGallery-1.0.zip - Mutiny32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would love it if this could work with Gallery2.
- agoodm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://savegamehosting.com/pics/smooth/SmoothGallery-1.0/demo.html A mirror, if that low capacity server gets overwhelmed then I will move it to a better server :-)
- ToxicGas, on 08/11/2008, -1/+4overall ... nice job.
but ... "Would you want to restrict it only to the users who have Flash enabled ?" this shouldn't be an essential reason to use it based on the stats http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer/ - mikepanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice, love that it is free, I've used High Slide in the past, similar idea: http://vikjavev.no/highslide/

- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"I've yet to see a single person on Digg perform the joke properly."
I've seen a couple of good "But will it blend"s, but that was before everyone started doing it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yup. It works fine for me - Opera 9.10 on debian linux.
- podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The server is a bit hit and miss. The demos are more miss than hit but it is a pretty cool bit of coding. Mootools FTW.
http://www.duggmirror.com/programming/Impressive_javascript_Smooth_Gallery_v1_0_released
That does help for the front page but the demo's pages aren't cached. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Refresh it.
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2combining this and lightbox would be great
*off to mess around with the code* - wschamps04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is the original mootools not downloading for anyone else?
http://mootools.net/download/release - jon1012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey nelsom, funny that you found this solution because it's exactly the same fix I've included on 1.0.1 I released yesterday :-)
- hexaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i`ve got it..it was a bug..now in the 1.0.1 version it has been fixed.. :)
- jon1012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For those interested, and if the server is down, here is a demo of the full mode (gallery) on flat pages, and on another server...
http://smoothslideshow.jondesign.net/SmoothGallery-1.0/demo.html - Kmarie1980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For anyone who has actually gotten this to load - how does the picture gallery compare to lightbox?
- madmac66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2real nice, thanks for sharing
- cbmeeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, I really liked it! I am going to add it to my collection of gallery software. Plus, building the pages are easy from a DB.
http://www.codershangout.com - sonofagunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if it's just a really slow server or what, but it looks and peforms terrible for me in Opera. It's not very usable either, IMO.
The effects are pretty neat, but it could be better with more traditional controls. - CosmicBlend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After trying a few times I managed to at least download the files
- bigrodey77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"In one word: worth checking out"
Anyone else see something wrong with that? - jon1012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well... Normally it's not slow at all :-) Just the digg effect, bigger than I thought...
- AnfiniL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice javascript
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow a talented /b/tard. Who knew.
- ogre2112, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It should be less artsy and more usable.
- david2112, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know how to enable automatic generation of thumbnails?
It's described on the SmothGallery page, but I can't make it work.
Supposedly you have to use "useThumbGenerator: true" and make "cache" subdir..
I did all that, but the thumbnails are not generated .. I'm using apache on WinXP
Thank you - ralucarer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Did anyone manage to build multiple carousels?
I want to make the first carousel.
After clicking on a image, the first carousel minimizes and a second carousel opens.
After clicking on a picture from the second carousel a third carousel opens.
Finally, after clicking on a image from the third carousel i open (instead of the big picture) a flash video.
Any clues?
- agoodm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well that quickly overwhelmed my 1mbit uplink, offloaded the images to one of my gigabit servers - should be faster now.

- smoothdzion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is the bomb tool. Why go thru the complication of using flash when you don't have to. This tool completely helps not have to use that flash shiz. Thanks Jon. You are the bomb.com.
- nelsonm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On my version of PHP at least, I had to add a notfound() function and put strtolower in the following line so it would work with uppercase extensions...
$ext = strtolower(substr(strrchr($image, '.'), 1)); // get the file extension - hexaust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey..did anyone encountered an error..like..if you put more than 8 images..the thumbs from the carousel start shivering?....:| it`s very odd..
- marc26uk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Not working for me, I just get grey/black striped bar (image loading, I presume). Just me ?
Opera 9 - nicnic77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. - UMDWei, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I get it too on my IE 6. I think it's just slow... due to the server load.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1"In one word: worth checking out, and a must have in your toolbox."
Thats 10 words you *****. - blackbrrr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1not enough apple rumors to publish today. must find more javascript widgets. lame.
- rauchg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Too simple for 16kb in my view, and definitely not lightweight, it's almost as heavy as the whole (packed) library
