- silentvirus, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Installing them all seperatly is more secure. So if you are just running a test server, then Xampp or Wamp is a whole lot easier to install and use, but, for anything else, install them all seperately.
- jhowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It would probably be a little easier using something like xampp or wamp. Or maybe I just am not getting the benefit of installing them separately.

or just use linux ;) - zone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always used that tut. it's made things a lot easier.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Windows is way more suited for business and high volume sites, while Linux is suited for everything else. :)
As much as I hate the Nix culture, I must say they make a fine server product. ;D - Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@The guy that quoted "WinLAMP".
The 'L' in LAMP stands for Linux. A Windows stack is simply referred to as a 'WAMP stack', not a 'WinLAMP stack'

@The "IIS is better more secure..blah blah" guy:
You can run Perl and asp (including aspx/.NET) on Apache just fine and just as fast. I can only assume your comments on security and performance were stated for no other purpose than to troll, so I'll just leave at that.
With all that said, xampp is a great solution. Lighttpd is an excellent alternative to Apache/IIS as well. - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would anyone want to run Apache on Windows. IIS is the far better platform, runs Perl, PHP, ASP, and .NET, MySQL, and has better performance and security.
I always like to say, 'to each their own'... but that's a joke right? - dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed, I got XAMPP set up in under 5 minutes.
- winAMPED, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I second and third... Digg should have a how-to section!
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://digg.com/software/Install_Apache,_MySQL_and_PHP,_easy,_fast_and_clean
- mattclare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't install all these services on your desktop.
Find an old PC, make sure it has a network card and CD ROM, and run a Linux Live CD or if you can erase the data install something like Fedora, SuSE or Unbutu.
Attach your keyboard screen and mouse and a network cable attached to your home-router (you need one, buy it) to the old computer. Use the GUI to start Apache MySQL and Samba.
Unplug your keyboard screen and mouse and plug them back into your Windows PC. Find the server in your network neighborhood and connect to the web folder and point your web browser at the same address. You could even mount the share as a network drive.
That's a faster more stable setup than this kludge. It will also make you more aware of the security issues you'll need to know about if you're going to put your MySQL/PHP stuff on the interweb. - atomant411, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would argue that if you are learning PHP and/or MySQL for the first time you should install each separately just because you will have a better understanding of each part's role and configuration.
However, if you've done it once, switching to a packaged installer saves alot of time. - T-Bird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These how-to guides that frequently show up on Digg area great thing. I call for a specific section to be set up to highlight how-to articles...anyone second?
- alphanerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recently changed jobs from a *nix enviroment to a windows environment. In my previous job I had to manipulate firewall/proxy log files and generate custome reports on *nix. When I changed jobs there was not a *nix box in site so I wanted to have the same tools in windows. I found this tutorial excellent.
- jaydub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, xampp is the way to go.
- ahrefd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why is apache/tomcat not the way to go and why not windows? redundent question, but i'd like a reference point regardless. thanks
- yourmomsbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. I was using Yellow tip, which I like, but it looks like XAMPP has way more stuff in it.
Very cool. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MUCH better: http://digg.com/programming/Apache,_MySQL,_PHP_and_PhpMyAdmin_all_rolled_into_one
- SinisterBunni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will give you the fact that IIS/SQL Server/Windows is a good performance solution. However, if you are running PHP, I have had catastrophic applicatoin malfunctions after service packs for Windoze. The WinLAMP/XAMP solutions for PHP are much better.
- McNamron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, wampserver has sure been good to me. Bam, install, and it's up and running. XAMPP looks nice, tho. I'd be keen to try the Linux or Mac OS X versions...
- Rayke8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is nice to use if you are developing locally. I host on a FreeBSD server but I do my initial development locally under XP using NuSphere PhpEd. I works wonderfully. I have them set up so that I just have to upload my files to the server without change except for the MySQL login information. It is secure as long as you your ports closed to the outside world. However, using it for a production site is at best reckless.
- lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I saw the title I thought "This better be about XAMPP."
- oohBattman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0xamp, quick and easy
- mizidymizark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have been using WAMP for awhile now after previously having installed all three separately. The ease of the single installer by itself made WAMP the easy solution. Throw in PHPMyAdmin already configured and I was a happy camper.
- agentgray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ApacheTriad
- mascix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use xampp and happy :) in windows 2003
- Sassanix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used XAMPP on windows... I tried manually but never worked. So thanks for the TUT
- vagabond0101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So.. which is better? Windows+IIS+ASP/PHP or Linux+Apache+PHP or some other combination?
- krynsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use WAMP (www.wampserver.com/en as mentioned by the first post) Quick, no brainer install and provides access to all admin tools and allows restarts of all services from a tray icon. Excellent stuff.
- Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@sithlrd:
More mature? No. Better? Than .jsp, sure. - stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No one ever figured out what the hell .Net was supposed to be. An early symptom of Microsoft being totally lost and well-nigh moribund.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.apachefriends.org/
Much easier..
- Ben - pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On debian you can download and install all of this with a single 'apt-get' command.
- Paradox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have an easier way, download easyPHP, install, done.

Or follow guide and maybe have something working after a few hours of frustration.
No digg. - Sithlrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0.Net is clearly a better, more mature solution.

Step 2: Install XAMPP for Linux

Done. - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Step 1: Install Linux...
- dimwell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Want to run Apache, PERL, MySQL, and PHP?
Step 1: Install Linux.
Step 2: RTFM.
Installing those services on a Windows machine requires, more often than not, a massive kluge of instability and insecurity. - DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"Step 1: Install Linux..."
Why not install Windows 95? - wazoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0why would you even consider using windows for a web server. asp is no excuse, learn a better language.
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Yep, clearly a troll... and thats all Digg has these days.
- Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why would anyone want to run Apache on Windows. IIS is the far better platform, runs Perl, PHP, ASP, and .NET, MySQL, and has better performance and security.
