Google grants outsider Chrome-coding privileges

news.cnet.com — I guess that Google Chrome really is an open-source project. Thus far, the Web browser has been written largely by Google programmers, though shortly after the software's public release, Google started accepting patches from outsiders. Now, though, an outsider has become an official insider.

inactive, on 12/15/2008, -3/+32I never saw anyone say the contrary, that Chrome wasn't an open source project -- I've been on the dev mailing lists, and there is a lot of openness and interaction going on. This is no surprise, CNet is just trying to attract viewers over nothing.

Chrome might not be good for you but for others it might be perfect and Firefox and Opera are just overkill. Diversity is the key to society.

Have you even tried using Chrome for a few days? It really does reveal itself to be an excellent platform to run Web Apps on.
inactive, on 12/16/2008, -0/+1Odds are very good it's not directly Chrome's fault. Perhaps Chrome is hitting a bug in an already faulty driver. I would never use Windows as my main OS, but when I have tried Chrome for long periods of time, I've never had that sort of trouble.

DefiniteFail, on 12/16/2008, -1/+1I trust Google that they will review all the code that enters this project. A lot of OSS projects are unorganized and accept patchs without reviewing if it's written properly or not, common problem.

stshank, on 12/18/2008, -0/+0Yeah, perhaps I was a bit glib in writing the opening to that story--certainly Chrome was open-source from its public release. But there's a different degree of openness that comes when a company permits outsiders to participate. Often that's pretty hard to do for cultural and technical reasons, even if the company truly does want it open to others' help. I was just noting that Google had made the leap, or at least taken a major step.

That said, no, I wasn't just trying to attract viewers over nothing.

Only problem is that it seems to cause a bluescreens time to time with my windows. So its pretty much unusable. After they fix it ill switch it to my primary browser.

fxu1989, on 12/16/2008, -12/+5I'm currently on Ubuntu 8.10... seems good so far. Been with it for exactly... 31 hours. CS2 on wine runs a bit slow for me, so I might be thinking of dual-booting with xp only to use photoshop and a bit of gaming every now and then. Everything else is great.
