maps.google.com — Google Maps just released a new feature that lets you actually look around the street. Seems to only be working in major cities for now.

toasterweasel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+109Not pointless at all. I just move to Saint Louis and looking at a top down map is one thing when trying to find a restaurant but this would be great. I could actually see the street I'll be going to and exactly where the restaurant is. Maybe not useful to everyone but I'll make use of it.

I have to travel a lot for work and sometimes a view like this makes all the difference in the world when you are trying to figure out where you are going. A map and a set of directions can only tell you so much... I plan on using this extensively while planning my next trip to Miami.

inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39It will ALWAYS just be for major cities. Every time there is some new feature, or some extremely hi resolutioon someone suggests that it will eventually be widespread. It won't be. Lots of areas, including decent sized cities don't have ANY resolution yet, let alone street view.

inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24It helps if you're better at spotting landmarks than street signs. Print the directions, but also note the businesses around it so you'll know whether or not your in the general area of your destination.

Also, if you are looking for locations or property, you can actually take a look at the pictures of the surrounding neighborhood before going to see for yourself. When looking for an apartment, a9 saved me lots of time as I was able to simply look up and down the street to see how run down the neighborhood was instead of traveling to the actual building.
