- yellowbkpk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Also check out my http://www.mapki.com/ and the Google-Maps-API group on Google.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a very good tutorial. I've been dragging my feet in learning the API, so this looks like a great place to start. Thanks for posting.
- MetalliMyers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought this was old because the Google Maps API has been out for a long time, but this is pretty cool.
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't you need a "key no." from google (it's free but still) to uniquely id your site before you can display the maps within your page?
- andyhunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Pragmatic Programmers sell an excellent guide to the google maps API as well: http://www.pragmaticprogrammer.com/titles/sdgmapi/index.html
Scott Davis, the author, is working on a full-length book on geographic information systems; should be out sometime this year. Really cool stuff. - Joshuarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, you need to register with google and get a key. "But still..." what? They are providing a service. What is wrong with requiring a key?
- Joshuarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GMapEZ is not better... At least it wasn't for me. The info marker implementation in GMapEZ is seriously lacking (no directions links, and the display breaks in several common browsers without serious hacks), and the js is totally bloated. Yes, it is an easy way to get basic map working, but it is not "much better" than learning how to use the api. This link helped me get going, but really the google docs are the best way to go.
Seriously you shouldn't say its much better without backing up your opinion. - silhouette88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a very well written document. Even if you aren't an experienced programmer (like myself), you should still be able to follow it.
But what's up with the 1990's style web page? Haven't we evolved beyond these FortuneCity-lookin sites by now? I appreciate the content, but what would have been cool is if he wrote the entire tutorial *within* a google map. You "start" at part 1, and then when you click on a new marker along the way it opens up an info window with the contents of that part. Maybe as you progress through it you get to use different features (like initially the contents of part 5 are super tiny, but as you zoom in closer you can read it).
/me shrugs Just a thought. After reading this tutorial, I can practice what I'm preaching now. - scrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ simplesimon18

- millhouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a great tutorial. I am currently working on a google maps/wardrive project. Even though I already have maps created with points on them, the tutorial provided me with more efficient ways for creating my maps. I am currently using Perl, but due to the nature of Perl CGI, these tutorials have provided more efficient way of doing what I currently have. This is also a good tutorial for creating the sidebars. I had a hard time finding any good instructions on doing so prior to this.

Good digg. - p010ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Needs to be enhanced with references to creating modules for use in personalized home page on google (http://www.google.com/ig/directory)!

- HeyBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'd like to know how to do google maps WITHOUT using the google API. Specifically scroll the images while loading/dumping new ones offscreen. This is for an open ended slideshow.
- rahman15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is great recourse if anyone interest to use Google map with their website%u2026I found really useful and helped me a lot to create my following websites%u2026%u2026.
