- dynein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PDFs suck and Java royally sucks. sounds like a perfect marriage of suckiness
- JNitz36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"PDFs suck" ... hmm... I for one like the idea of a cross-platform file type.
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But... PDFs suck
- o_sam_o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Java in 2001 and Java now are two differnt things

What language do you propose that is open and is usable for layout? latex and post script are nice, but aren't a complete drop in replacement. - idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PDF's are 1337!
- christophla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know what platform Digg is running on? just curious.
- o_sam_o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know if there are any plans to support XFA forms ?
- bdxphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Luckily for us, the PDF format is now open and we don't need to use the Adobe Acrobat, we can use ghostscript or something less large.
As far as Java is concerned, it IS inefficient and it does have memory leaks. BUT you must also recognize that it is still maturing as a language. It is a language that has been very thought out...unlike c. With each reincarnation of java and new VMs it is getting better and better in both regards. At least it takes that power of memory management out of the wrong people hands. Because none of us know of any application with memory leaks that wasn't written in Java. *image of me rolling my eyes*
But this is nice because it allows us to dynamically generate PDFs for people to print without having to worry about typefaces as you do in other forms of inter-network communication. - mitul0520, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Till the users of digg are 30 and sold a company for minimum $9 million. I guess a little help like this tutorial encourages them to understand pros and cons of various technology.
As article suggests usage of Java+PDF "banks generating customer statements for e-mail delivery to readers buying specific book chapters and receiving them in PDF format. The list is endless."
I have used opensource iText for generating orders acknowledgments to customers. Well, wanted some formatting, so look and feel of the email attachment be good. So plain text was ruled out. Generating MS-Word was out of question. Can not ask customer to buy MS-Office to read email attachments. PDF was nice solution. - dynein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You want us all to be script kiddies like you? Oh... this must not be the place for me."
script kiddies like me? heh. im 30. i sold a consulting company that i founded in 1995 for about $9 million in 2001. how you doing, gregcotten? at the time i sold the company, we had just landed a big account to develop an EBPP site for a major telecom company using SilverStream server. (as a "script kiddie," i probably wasnt aware that SilverStream is a complete java development environment. i also probably didnt attend and send almost each of my developers to $2000 a pop java classes put on by sun. and i probably didnt spend about 80 hours a week writing EJB's b/c they were the big hip thing.) in 2001 java was the new hip buzzword. it's horribly inefficient and full of memory leaks.
"switching to java because it works on any platform is like switching to anal sex because it can be used on both males and females." --unknown
you're right though- digg is full of newbies and script kiddies, and probably isn't the place for you. everyone "diggs" stories like "look at this useful list of shell commands!" and "omg look google did something!!!!!"
"What language do you propose that is open and is usable for layout? latex and post script are nice, but aren't a complete drop in replacement." you're right. and i agree. my hatred for the ridiculously large bloatware that adobe spills out as acrobat reader spills over into disdain of the format, i guess. - gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"PDFs suck and Java royally sucks. sounds like a perfect marriage of suckiness -dynein"
