- cgranade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Remember: we developers are a diverse group. Not all of us appriciate AJAX+CSS as much as others. In fact, CSS is hardly a "developer" topic, as much as it is a "designer" topic. That said, I do appriciate both the gritty kind of system programming and the high-level web development sides of things.
- wrinkles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Need to fix display for portables. I see a 1 inch margin on my 2 inch screen. Basically unreadable. Slashdot had same problem until their recent makeover. Don't neglect us mobile readers!
- Ensnared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"In fact, CSS is hardly a "developer" topic, as much as it is a "designer" topic."
No. CSS is used to implement a design, not to create it. It's a lot more of a developer topic than it is a designer topic. A pure designer would have little or no knowledge of CSS - he/she would use a graphics editor, and possibly a WYWIWYG editor, to create the design, and then hand it over to a developer for the actual implementation of that design. The developer would then use HTML and CSS (as well as any client- and server-side scripting, obviously) to get that job done. - CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think you've missed the point IKean. Digg has come up with a new format for creating a community. This is an homage to Digg, and doesn't try to compete with or erase them. It serves a more focused developer base than Digg tries to, but completely acknowledges who came first.
- succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks rickross. It looks much better now. And it is a tool I would use. I know you will lose some clicks but long-term goals usability vs. short-term financial I think you made the right decision.

Seems like a really good idea, but it also seems far to Java and .NET oriented. There's nothing wrong with either of those languages/platforms, but I think all the exciting stuff is happening elsewhere. - rickross, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sorry it seems too Java and .NET oriented at this time - it is largely coincidence and partly heritage. We definitely do not have any intention to have it be biased to ANY technology, but our ability to get the word out (just started yesterday, really) is definitely heavy in the Java space.
We welcome developers in all areas, and we hope people will help broaden the coverage by submitting stories and voting to promote stories on all developer topics. Please bring it on - more is better. Thanks! - succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You are interested in creating a site to make money from developers. Don't show the ads right in the middle of the content list, it is so damn annoying. I can understand in regular content articles but not in the damn list you want people to view. Google doesn't Shove their sponsored links on the left hand side in the middle of all the search results.... Neither does any other large search engine. Users first, ads second.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks like it will be a great resource. Developer posts are my favorite things on Digg, but people here get tired of AJAX and CSS articles. So it will be nice to have a website dedicated to developers.
- rickross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent question, merz, and the answer is a qualified "yes." It is totally possible, but the interface we had created to provide access to this was poor. We will prioritize getting this feature redeployed because it is really nice to have a feed that mixes together your favorite tags. BTW, we are "OR'ing" those tags right now, so you get a combined feed. I don't know whether we have an "AND" mode in there. I guess we'll have to factor that into the interface.
- rickross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, those text ads on tthe left were nasty (reminiscent of "we interrupt this program to bring you an important message").
We have moved them to the right side, and they feel less intrusive, but I bet they will get fewer clicks, too.
Thanks for the suggestion. - merz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I see that you can browse stories by a single tag, but is there any way to generate a feed/page for several tags? For example, I'm interested in all stories tagged unix-linux, database, and security.
- rickross, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks for helping to tell people about dzone.com, bonlebon. We've been working hard to build a new system to support this, and we hope other developers share our interest in a social bookmarking site specifically for developers.
Now that the foundation of the web application is functional, we have some nice ideas for enhancing it. Also there will be a complete developer's api and SDK, so other developers can build their own clients for the dzone.com service on any platform they wish. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3make your own dzone here http://pligg.com
- sand13w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1congrats on the launch of dzone
- PeterST, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Congrats! dzone is great!
Don't just check it out but also contribute to it.
Share you interesting DZ links! - Tijmen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hehe, those pluses look awfully familiar... Let me think...
Right! Those are the ones I also stole from CNN.com a few weeks ago! :)
Pity the poor icon-makers, always getting ripped off.. - maseone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@kevincupp
If your phone is capable, you can download Opera Mini. It views digg properly and allows digging from your mobile.
That's just a current solution I found happens to work on my phone.
Though, a full text wap compatible page would be cool too. =) - sbraford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Ensnared - when was the last time you worked with a web designer?
Any web designer worth their weight in salt better darn well know CSS inside and out.
Though, I don't care whether you call it "development" or "design" -- you just have to know CSS, on *both* sides of the coin. - rickross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it's just a total screwup on our part. JavaBlackBelt.com is another service in the DeveloperZone network, and our membership system is incorrectly sending new members a validation mail from JavaBlackBelt rather than from dzone.com. Thanks for letting us know about this, and we apologize for the confusion. It will be fixed right away.
BTW - Sun is not affiliated with DeveloperZone in any way and has NO ROLE WHATSOEVER in establishing our policies or offerings. We have been active in the Java world for many years, but we have always been absolutely independent, and that won't change. Just because we have Java-related origins does not mean that somehow Sun is a "behind the scenes" conspirator. - kevincupp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. Speaking of which, I'd like to see a mobile version of Digg that allows us to digg stories instead of just reading them. Is there one out there that I missed?
- rickross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We've filed support for mobile form factors as a high priority enhancement. We'll try to get that in there ASAP. Thanks!
- BillyG123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1minutes later, I get this email:

Is this Sun's idea of going OpenSource? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, so I got theplugg for entertainment and this for programming...soon I won't need snooty digg.
- BillyG123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're not biased, why is every subscription offer (who wants that crap anyway?) Java-based?
- Pashimito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dzone is really great! It'll be even greater when there'll be API available :)
- mikeurbandz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, we didn't use pligg to build this. It's software we wrote entirely in house. There were a lot of things we do, and want to be able to do in the future, that pligg is not capable of doing.
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool , all my programing questions in one place
I can relax more. - realjenius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm psyched to see the direction that dzone takes - I'm looking forward to digging in to the APIs that are in the works.
- sbraford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@BillyG - Yes.
- rickross, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2We expect to have a rough cut of the api ready for courageous testers sometime in the next week or so, realjenius. Keep an eye on the site for news.
- Ikean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For a developer site, it's beautifully unoriginal. In writing the in-house software you must have spent a lot of time going back to look at digg for the transcription. I think it's far from coincidence that it's been thought and mentioned so frequently in these few comments already. I wish you'd have used a bit more creativity.
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It looks like Google.
- RBasil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Looks like a rip of Pligg which is a rip of Digg.
- zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Man this isn't a blatant ripoff of any site I've seen before. [/scarcasm]

What is Digg?
