- rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Yeah Flash video is really the most universal web video format. I'm not a fan of all flash sites, but using it for embedding video clips is a good use of it.
- scottwills, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Very useful, but a multiple dupe:

http://digg.com/design/Free_video_tutorial_on_Flash_Sound_Design - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Flash 8. No Digg. No flash 8 available for linux yet.
- farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't agree that the net should be about free content without advertisment... that's just not feesable. What is wrong with Google ads?! Good for these guys, the don't seem to need them, but I would have absolutly NO problem if they did. I would probaably even check out a few to support them.
- GotGoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here's what happened to the videos from the creator of the site.
http://theflashblog.com/?p=165 - gollo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Maybe but when it lets me watch youtube and google videos in my web browser on linux because there is no 64bit wmv support as of yet then I think it's a darn good thing
- jimb0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Man, this sounds like Slashdot. Lot of Flash haters here too. As a Flash developer for 8 or so years now, there's a lot that can be done with Flash that go beyond websites. This guy's videos are good, watched a few, and are very professional.
- usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Use wine, install firefox and flash in wine and there you go a working flash player in wine.
and here is a open source flash development environment
http://f4l.sourceforge.net/ - basvd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Apparently the author was oblivious to the fact that Flash 8 isn't available for Linux yet. So unfortunately I am unable to view the page.
- nickgs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This site is great! I like how he has beginner and fairly complex actionscripting. I find it funny that many of you diss Flash .... my question is how many of you who relentlessly point out the current and persistent flaws in Flash in terms of standards and accessibility actually know the technology? Like with everything in life.... everything in moderation. For those of you who just do CSS/HTML stuff think about what is happening with Myspace.... 10 year olds are writing CSS and HTML which will eventually impede on our bread and butter. For ANY developer Flash is a valuable asset in the toolbox and this site is a great starting point!
- CygnusTM, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6No adds? That's a bummer. I was hoping there would be more later. Hopefully there are no subtracts, also.
- usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://f4l.sourceforge.net/
flash 4 linux
F4L is an open source development environment for Macromedia Flash, a multi-platform format(swf/svg) widely used for web applications and vector animation. Basically, you can make interactive eye candy for your web site or any other purpose while maintai........... - GotGoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Digg effect now I think because the videos aren't loading.
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Haha, with NoScript on, all I get on the site is
"// Provide alternate content for browsers that do not support scripting // or for those that have scripting disabled. Alternate HTML content should be placed here." - NtroP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No flash-8 for Linux - trying to use a proprietary format for delivery will bite many of your customers in the ass every time. Remember, not everyone runs Windows.
- geofffox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Excellent. The more video tutorials, the better.
- C00001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, well, he doesn't work for stanford anymore, he moved to frog design. i hope stanford will keep hosting the tutorials and forum anyways, but it does eat a lot of bandwidth, so i guess we'll see.
- TheWorkz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was just about to write the same thing. I always click on someones ad the second I am done reading the article if they are independant. I just do it to help them out and others should do the same thing. :)
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"and all FREE & no adds!"
So when someone has a popular site that gets a lot of traffic, you just expect them to pay for the monthly server bill out of their pocket? Ads can be annoying, but they're necessary. - transeunte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What pisses me off is that sometimes you don't get the same content in pure HTML format.
- aforonda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah yeah so I know all the standards argument etc.. but just for the sake of it, what if I wanted to create a site in all flash, has anyone seen any tutorials on how to create an entire website with flash? I've googled and googled and I cant find a How to create a WEBSITE with flash demo anywhere, especially of the Free variety.
- zakharm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i think it has become even more popular lately now that companies like Google, YouTube, etc are using Flash to stream their video.
yes there is a lot of hype about AJAX, but flash is still as popular as ever. - transeunte, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I think that's a good thing, actually.
Some sites are just so overloaded with useless flash animation that they become unbearable. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not only the videos aren't loading, now the whole page aren't loading. Damn!
- adrock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So can some one explain what makes Ajax so much better than Flash for creating applications and "navigation"? Because so far I have not seen anything that I haven’t been able to make in Flash for years. I think that Flash def. gets a bad rap because the majority of sites that use it abuse it (that's right I rhymed), but when used "correctly" I believe it is the best ways to create not only amazing interactive experiences, but very rich and dynamic cross platform, browser independent, web applications.
With that said I think the whole "Web 2.0" movement is great, and I think that Ajax is helping to create a more seamless and pleasant browsing experience. Just don’t count Flash out as a technology that can deliver the same results, but with a few more perks. Action Script 2.0 is a VERY powerful language, and I would challenge anyone that thinks otherwise to read up a bit more before judging it. - timf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By customize I mean for example if a site has very small text size, I just Press Strg and + and it gets better. For some visually impaired people this is an essential feature, for many others it's a really nice comfort feature. Same goes for bad background/text-color combinations. I can change both things easily here in my firefox, not so if it's flash.
Another annoying thing that just occured to me:
If you happen to press a key combination and a flash animation just happens to have the focus it won't work. Same for scrolling with the mouse wheel. - spudnik187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Lee is very good and know what he's talking about. He is also a forum moderator at creativecow.net, so if you ever have any questions drop by the message boards and, most likely, he'll be there to help.
- TheWorkz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with many of you about the benefits of Flash Video. I chose to publish 50 independant short films from my short film competition in flash video just because of Cross platform/browser compatibility. I just opened up access to the all the short films for all digg users today. (Normally registered only.)
-Luke
PS. I use Riva FLV Encoder as the FLV converter.
http://www.filmerica.com and choose "2005 Streaming Films" - timf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So true.
People really should think more about the technology they use to distribute content. - vamapaull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love Flash!!
...I love Lee's tutorials ....I think gotoAndLearn is the best!!! and grate community on the forums - rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I came across this site a while ago when looking for a flv playlist player. This guy is extremely helpful.
- timf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Why I don't like flash:
In general:
- It breaks the browser navigation.
- It breaks the interaction with links (e.g. I can't open a link in a new tab)
- You can't customize it (Text color, size etc.)
Linux specific:
- It grabs the sound device and no other software is able to play sound when flash is running.
- There is no Flash 8 and I can't watch the videos this article is about. - toad3k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You guys above make it sound like you have no problems with flash movies in linux. On every linux system I've tried there is always a sound delay in any flash app I view. It is the most irritating thing I have ever seen, and I've never seen a workaround to it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why on Earth would they require Flash 8 for tutorial videos???
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is there an open source tool for creating flash files? i'm trying not to go the pirate bay route
- aforonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is openlazlo totally free now? Last time I checked there was some crazy license fee somewhere.
- xGrill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1acually it is possible for ppl to tab in flash. you use the externalInterface method.
It communicated with javascript - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2AWESOME, Awesome to the max...

http://www.youtube-ipod.net/youtube-3gp-mobile-pho ... - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FYI most people(general public) don't use linux, so meh. Secondly AJAX will NEVER be able to create the kind of user experiences that Flash does. Check out all of the sites on www.thefwa.com ... Almost all of them would be impossible to recreate with AJAX... They create an immersive *experience* for the user, rather than just being an application, which is what AJAX-type stuff is good for.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with NtroP, F.8 hasn't been released for Lin* yet so consider exporting to F.7 to reach everyone.
- DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finially! a great site to brush up on my Flash 8 skills!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For those who complain that flash breaks browser navigation. Check out the new(beta) maps.yahoo.com. You can play around in the flash movie and when you hit the back and forward buttons, those actions are played again for you.
This proves that if you know your stuff with Flash and care enough not to break browser navigation, you can do it. Now stop dissing flash and learn to embrace it. As with any tool or technology, it is upto the developer to use it or abuse it. Blaming Flash for the developers' faults/carelessness is childish.
And yes, I am a Flash fanboy! - kame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just binary-edit your libflashplayer.so. Search for "Shockwave Flash" and replace 7.0 with 8.0. It's a hack, but it works most of the time.
- s14sh3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nice, clean layout. I personally dislike having an entire site made in flash, but it's good for making small elements like buttons and things if you don't over-use it.
- C00001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1most of the tutorials are about capabilities specific to flash 8, anyways, so they're not really going to do you a lot of good without it...
- Yang1205, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Digg... if you got a really cool site, we'll be sure to crash it"
lol dam the digg effect - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Um... yeah. I'm sure Stanford University is really glad he's hosting these on their site. Must be nice to be a Uni employee with all that free bandwidth.
- prodeveloping, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's becoming less popular for site navigation (in favor of AJAX and all the Web 2.0 buzz) but more popular for video. The On2 codec allows for outstanding quality and loading times.
- C00001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I don't think he was oblivious, I think he probably wasn't really concerned with it. If you're on linux, what good are flash tutorials going to do? There's no linux version of the flash ide right now, so you're either not developing flash, or you're doing it on another box, in which case you can watch then from that machine.

What is Digg?
