- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Pffft man you guys are all tools, if someone one is willing to teach me something for free I say more power to them!
- rowlando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm gonna attempt this on-line course. Currently I idly surf in a unstructured manner reading lots about stuff but not ever really learning anything in detail. It's about time I knuckled down to some study again and if someone is going to teach it for free, then that's only more reason to take part.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There is no Java in Ajax, there is Javascript which is completely different.
Also Ajax is not written as "AJAX," it's written as "Ajax." - wizgha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Care to provide a better alternative?
- wizgha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Exactly.
It's true that there's so much information out there nowadays, but it comes at a "price": making ends meet on your own is a bit difficult, at least for the basics and a good overview of the subject.
So thumbs up for such an initiative. - giantAppleCore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4jesus christ, so many comments here about "I don't like Java","I wouldn't touch Java" guess what? Ajax doesn't use Java. It uses Javascript (though, I suppose it could use it, but it would be crap. But though the names are similar, Javascript and Java are NOT the same thing. Sun developed Java, Netscape developed javascript. Look them up on wikipedia.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Offering this free course is completely "spare time" activities on the part of myself (Sang Shin) and other volunteers."
Reported as inaccurate. This course is not affiliated with Sun Microsystems. - BitwiseMcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+410 WEEKS? Jebus, I'll teach you ajax in 10 minutes.
Step 1: Setup xmlHttpRequest
Step 2: Setup function to call when request is done
Step 3: Use request to GET / POST data
Step 4: function is called when request is done
Step 5: ???
Step 6: Profit!
There! now everybody append to their email sig: "AJAX Certfied (BitwiseMcgee's school for the gifted)" - obeattie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I'd give it a shot. Way to go if you want to give up your time to help others.
"AJAX IS OLD, GET OVER IT" - and you are? You obviously are a complete idiot if you bash others in this way. I don't see you offering any help to people. - Foxman2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Day late and a dollar short... but from the first (non-title) slide.

• Even though Sang Shin is a full-time employee of

I'd still be interested in reading something once a week in a (hopefully) organized fashion. - Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I don't see how this is from Sun Microsystems either. The only thing I see is the guy giving the course is a Sun employee.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is set up just like any other school that offers online classes. They want to make sure that your keeping up with everyone else. And if you have any problems and don't understand something, you get help with it early and don't get so far behind that your cramming at the last second to get it all done.
- rowlando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AJAX indeed hinders accessibility though through continued education, web developers can choose to inform themselves about AJAX best practices and how nifty rich web applications impact users who don't care for them. Check out http://www.maxkiesler.com/index.php/weblog/comments/how_to_make_your_ajax_applications_accessible/ for a list of 40 AJAX accessibility tutorials.
An alternative technology to the loosely coupled set of technologies that AJAX brings together is Flex by Adobe, who on the surface seem to take accessibility seriously. See http://www.adobe.com/macromedia/accessibility/features/flex/best_practices.html for more info. - CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I love Java. It's so bad.
- DrMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note: This is NOT an official Sun Microsystems course from what I can tell. I worked as a course developer in SunEd for four years (and developed a few of the Java courses). The quality I see in this story is WELL below Sun's standards. The learning objectives I see on this site are simply awful. Remember: You get what you pay for. Check out Sun's official training site: http://www.sun.com/training/catalog/
The "Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language (SL-110)" course was my baby and I'm pretty proud of it (if they haven't changed it). You learn how to program using Java via a REAL real-world project. It's fun! - giancydni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2FREE!!! dugged!
- sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey if someone is going to teach me something for free....more power to them!!!! Just registered!
- gopal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With so much fuss about AJAX, it has an accessibility issue that we need to understand. People are trying to find solutions for overcoming this problem. Despite its rich user experience, I have seen many web sites making overuse of AJAX, which is really a pain in the butt.
- cdlavalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to muddy the waters, but google does have a nifty tool ( http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/ ) that converts a Java app (not Javascript, Java) into and AJAX app. So for those of you out there who know and love Java, it can come in handy. :)
- joemama82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm seeing an awful lot of negative comments towards a class that someone has obviously spent a significant amount of their own time to set up. Yes, it will probably be a little rough around the edges. No, it won't be perfect. It may be too slow or fast paced for some people. Luckily, it is FREE.
So, a) you don't even have to visit the page if you think Java sucks/Ajax is ezmode/This is stupid and b) If you DO visit the page and sign up for the course, and you don't like it, guess what? All you've wasted is some of your time.
I think that people that spend their time and effort to teach other people should be commended, especially if they are not being compensated. To me, this looks like a pretty complete and well-organized course for the super low price of $0. - Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Correction: looking at the PDF documents there is a Sun logo/header. Not sure if this rogue Sun employee hijacked their ***** or not but still not sure if this is "sanctioned" by Sun.
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"AJAX IS OLD, GET OVER IT"
Of course. No big company such as lets say Google would ever use Ajax. Oh, wait....
Eric Wilson - VegaObscura3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't a clothes style or a model of cars, it is a programming language which we have found to work quite well. We don't stop using something that works just because its "old". If something better comes along we probably will switch to it, but until then we will use Ajax.
- jasonsbytes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They now have a wiki and message board:
http://TheAjaxWorkShop.com
http://TheAjaxWorkShop.com/forums/ - harrisbradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1newbie says "huh?"
- Herzasche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sounds fun
- Smoov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"AJAX IS OLD. GET OVER IT."
THE AUTOMOBILE IS OLD. GET OVER IT.
YOU ARE A FREAKIN' MORON. GET OVER IT. - MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow, perfect. I'm going to give this a shot even though Java's just about the only language I have NOT touched. I have a web project going on where AJAX could beautifully perform my faceted menus.
Check out his other courses that he does around the year:
http://www.javapassion.com/#courses - sqlserver2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great. I've just registered.
- Sacrifice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't like how you have to follow a specific schedule and that it is only one class a week. Release the whole course and let people take it at their own pace, like Lynda.com courses.
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1There's a "J" for a reason.
- angler8890, on 10/12/2007, -13/+0A free 10-week "AJAX Programming" http://qqof.info/sitemap.htm online course is about to start from August 4th, 2006.
Good!!!! - verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -24/+1AJAX IS OLD. GET OVER IT.
- n0sferatu, on 10/12/2007, -26/+1Ick, Java.
