- inactive, on 03/15/2008, -5/+31Newsflash:
NOT EVERY SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE NEEDS THEIR OWN MESSENGER
MySpace failed with it, and so did LiveJournal. Gmail's isn't that great, either (c'mon, people, it's just Jabber). Why anybody would need anything other than the main three (AIM, YIM, MSN) is beyond me. Most people who are remotely tech savvy have accounts on one - if not all - of the main three IM protocols. Why do I need a hundred and one ways to get in touch with somebody who's real name I can't even remember? - skateforjondoe, on 03/15/2008, -5/+30wonder when pidgin will have this service in their app
- insinuate, on 03/15/2008, -1/+22*Pidgin. GAIM no longer exists.
- truspect0r, on 03/15/2008, -3/+21Yay another messenger service. Facebook's becoming net-bloat it seems.
- Kanidia, on 03/15/2008, -0/+17You have been invited to turn into a sexy greek god. Accept or Ignore?
- ramsinks.com, on 03/15/2008, -4/+21As long as GAIM has a plugin .. it's all good.
- diggit23, on 03/15/2008, -10/+26i must be the only one in existence that thinks this is a good idea
- RobotDan, on 03/15/2008, -2/+18clearly sarcasm is not as understood as i once believed.
- mikbor, on 03/15/2008, -4/+17even more ways for facebook to hoard information about you..Sign me up!
- sirsuds, on 03/15/2008, -0/+12I was like, then he was like, and then we were like.....OMG.
- SuperiorKarsch, on 03/15/2008, -1/+12[Instant Messaging Stories] __________ has wrote in ____________'s instant messaging box.

That's all I need beside's getting in pillow-fights with my aunt. - muuhgnoo, on 03/15/2008, -0/+11If not anything else, it will be interoperable with other jabber servers. Jabber is needed, since AIM/ICQ/MSN/YIM are not introperable, so you have to have accounts on all of them if you have friends on different networks. Jabber would end that, since you could communicate with a facebook/gmail/livejournal user without having a facebook/gmail/livejournal account yourself.
To get to this desireable state of global interoperability you _have_ to get an open and unencumbered protocol like Jabber. If everybody just kept using MSN/YIM/AIM/ICQ we would still have a fragmented IM landscape in 10 years. Hell, even AOL realized this and started moving ICQ and AIM to Jabber. Its unstable, its slow, you still need a AIM/ICQ account, but theyre working on it and will eventually get there.
> Why anybody would need anything other than the main three (AIM, YIM, MSN) is beyond me.
Just imagine email weren't standardized and you only had three major email providers and couldnt send a email to a YahooMail user without having an YahooID yourself. Would suck mightily, wouldn't it? - Jholder112233, on 03/15/2008, -0/+10hahahaha and -1 for you!
- GalacticRerun, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1118/f/ny!
- inactive, on 03/15/2008, -2/+12Replying to my own comment because I just noticed that it IS going to be Jabber, which isn't new or innovative in any way. This is completely stupid.
- r3bol, on 03/15/2008, -1/+11The point is not to be innovative here. The point is to allow users to use the same protocol on myspace, gmail, etc... (web based), or the desktop (if working on a machine with restricted web access for example), or mobile phone etc... So Mr. A on MySpace can talk with Mr. B who is checking gmail with Mr. C who is at work or doesn't have a browser open with Mr. D on a mobile phone.
Gmail was a good idea because it offered a handy way of instantly converting anyone with a gmail account (quite popular nowadays) to already have a jabber (XMPP foundation) account and password. GoogleTalk is supported (or can be developed) on most chat clients. - AresDiggs, on 03/15/2008, -1/+10Uhhh...
someone else wanna take this one? - AresDiggs, on 03/15/2008, -1/+10no one does already.. whats the difference ...
- picpak, on 03/15/2008, -0/+9"provided your friends don't go app crazy"
I need new friends. :( - sputnike, on 03/15/2008, -1/+9MySpace IS the MySpace of the 21st Century! Facebook is just, well different in a different annoying kind of way. To be honest, I'm getting sick of both of them.
- ricepudd, on 03/15/2008, -0/+72001? - ICQ first appeared in 1996... and the text based offerings have been around for decades
- codered1322, on 03/15/2008, -0/+7Go back to your Myspace.
- tiuk, on 03/15/2008, -1/+8Becoming?
- opiniastrous, on 03/15/2008, -1/+8I think it's a good idea. I was going to suggest it to Facebook actually.
The wall and mail system are OK, but both make real-time communication difficult. What's more, having a full convo on your wall just looks stupid. The wall should be more for random and fun bits of info. - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6Aside from applications bloating Facebook (which they are improving, you can see here http://www.facebook.com/FacebookPreviews?ref=s) that isn't really true. Their ads are barely noticeable and everything they've introduced has been very clean, provided your friends don't go app crazy. I'm sure this will be integrated just as discretely.
- PoeticExplosion, on 03/15/2008, -4/+10IM is a very useful thing, and bundling it with a website that has a similar focus (interpersonal communication) makes perfect sense. Why do people feel the need to bash useful things just because they are also trendy?
- blinktude, on 03/15/2008, -0/+6epic fail
- heavyd14, on 03/15/2008, -0/+6I don't know, maybe because everyone already has IM.
- kipmartin, on 03/15/2008, -2/+8a social network for people who A.) arent social by nature, and B.) are ***** at networking.
- dugR, on 03/15/2008, -2/+8i think this could actually be cool. the gmail im has been very usefull to me in the past. and this could be good for getting to know people better without taking the bigger step in finding out their aim and then messaging them explaining who you are. i havent done this but, a few people have imed me in the past. so im looking forward to this.
- Jholder112233, on 03/15/2008, -0/+5I don't get it.
- Typhoon2009, on 03/15/2008, -1/+6I wish more people in the US used MSN. So much sexier than AIM.
- theone156, on 03/15/2008, -0/+5I dont think Pownace does a very good job with IM
- inactive, on 03/15/2008, -10/+15No, you're not, because deep down you realize that it's actually pretty stupid, which means that NO ONE believes it's a good idea.
- Rikushix, on 03/15/2008, -0/+5"Emile Morrison and John Patterson are now an item."
I swear, the other day, two friends of mine started dating, made it "official" on facebook, and it said those exact words: "Him and her are now an item". -
