- larssg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, they aren't asking for donations "in order to go on". They are asking for donations to help accelerate the development of a new system for releasing contributions to Drupal. This system will be built and maintained no matter what the outcome of this "fundraiser" is.
So, Drupal development will only stop if all current and future contributors stop working on it, which is extremely unlikely given the size of the community. And even then you would still be able to work on it for you self as it is Open Source... - antinomia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Maybe if they charged $5 per download it wouldn't be open-source.

"Maybe if they charged $5 per download it wouldn't be open-source."
I get it that the term open-source for some implies free cost, but actually it has nothing to do with the cost of aquiring the software. The movement was started to "Free" the software from DRM and to mitigate issues with trapping sensitive data. Read up before you speak up. - dev65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In contrast to many other open source projects there is no donate button and no advertising or whatever on all pages of drupal.org. Anyone can use the software for free. But many people actually run their business with open source and earn money with it. So why is asking for donations condemnable? I think it is not, if you don't want you don't need to pay.
- dgtlmoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome! i hope we get some input into that structure too
- levavie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Drupal is now the best CMS in the world. It became flooded with great modules. This offer will greatly ease modules management chores.
- AliaK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah drupal is great. I'm happy to support new developments there. I've been using drupal for free for many years (my sites don't make $ though). it's only fair to help support them when they need it.
- hadi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i am developer of FA translation. drupal is awesome
- EricCosky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Drupal is a fantastic CMS. As a programmer myself (for 27 years now), I can appreciate the 'plumbing' of their system and in fact it is very much like something I was trying to do before I discovered Drupal - only much better, due almost certainly to the fact they have had smart people evolving it and the ideas behind it for some time now. It's not just some hack someone slammed together, not by a long shot. This kind of quality only comes through refined efforts over time. I've installed and experimented with every major CMS I could find and while Drupal doesn't necessarily have the coolest in eye candy yet, it has the infrastructure that will let it grow into the future. As it stands now, it's pretty darn nice. I use it on my own site http://www.cosky.com and while I'm not much of a blogger, it's nice that Drupal sites are so easy to maintain when I do have the time for that sort of thing.
- crazyhorse79, on 09/09/2009, -0/+0I wish I was in a position to contribute more, drupal is in my opinion the best cms out there and hopefully more theme sites like http://www.drupalthemesonly.com pop up. There is so much you can do with it and with the help of mustard seed and drupal.org its easy to learn
- clouseau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guess what that money was used for? (Hint: exactly that.)
- WellnessCorps, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The "new system for releasing Drupal contributions" is a very worthy cause and I've contributed to it financially in the hope that others will do so as well. Every dollar, yen, Euro, peso, etc. is needed so please ante up and let's get this project funded!

www.wellnesscorps.com - Markus123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I'm sure a person who's never coded before wouldn't find it "easier and quicker" to write there own website.
Plus, most CMS's are multi-language and can be themed quite easily and I highly doubt you could write a website quicker then somebody could upload a cms, add some modules and change a few configuration options too.
That said though... I don't see anything special about drupal, I've seen free cms's that in my opinion are better then Drupal AND they're not asking for new donations (in the thousands) every couple of months. - mookstah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1A little bit off-topic, but as a programmer, i really never got the point of CMS.
From what I've seen you end up spending more time on porting it to your needs than code the whole website from scratch.
Did I miss anything? - Markus123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1...This project is always asking for money, it was only a few months back they got ~12,000$ in donations for a "new server"
- freebit50, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0@connick007
Thank you!
@antinomia
Ha ha connick007 totaly owned you on that one. :) - mookstah, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Either way I wouldn't trust an application who is asking for donations in order to go on.
All of the CMS systems have security issues discovered every now and then.
Suppose they are out of money and stop the development, are we in trouble?
Building your own application is not necessarily more secure, but it's less of a target for hackers.
I have never seen any CMS that supports Hebrew well (or other LTR languages). Maybe it is a good sulotion if you don't need such support. - freebit50, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Maybe if they charged a 5 bucks a download they wouldnt need donations. Open source has issues.
