- kris33, on 08/06/2008, -2/+47Great!
And what's even greater:
The toolbar notified me about this. - tutfire, on 08/07/2008, -3/+42Aren't all firefox extensions open source technically? Like I'm pretty sure if you just find the extension as an .xpi you just rename it to .zip and all the files will be inside.
- looksliketrent, on 08/07/2008, -0/+23Open Source licensing is not the same as just being able to look at the source.
- sputza, on 08/06/2008, -5/+25Thats awesome! Open Source FTW
- joestump, on 08/06/2008, -0/+13It works fine if you go to:
http://code.google.com/p/diggtoolbar/source/browse ... - sfrench, on 08/07/2008, -2/+8The wording is a bit weird. You are checking out the files, and are able to edit, compile, and use the plugins locally to your heart's content. You just need an account to contribute back into the svn repository.
- Forever-Zero, on 08/07/2008, -2/+7This is the most obvious case of "I'm going to insult someone over the internet because I can" I've ever seen. You're trying too hard.
- LazerPotatoe, on 08/07/2008, -1/+6Darn, my toolbar is only 30% open source :(
- tama00, on 08/07/2008, -1/+5as im reading this there are 316 diggs. Are there seriously 316 people on digg who want to read an open source firefox extension or are you guys just digging this because you think its cool.
Sometimes i dont get this community. - Nobiting, on 08/07/2008, -2/+6Is it just me or does the toolbar freeze Firefox every time it fetches information?
- Forever-Zero, on 08/07/2008, -4/+8Isn't any Firefox extension open source? All you need to do is open the .xpi file. It's pretty much Javascript and some XUL, both of which are open source.
EDIT: tutfire beat me to it :) - inactive, on 08/07/2008, -6/+9This toolbar thing is annoying.
- joestump, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3Being able to see the source code and having the liberty to do what you wish with said source code are two distinct things. I pushed pretty hard to have this code (and all of the code we release at Digg, which is a lot considering we have 6 PEAR maintainers on staff) licensed as liberally as possible, which is why it's licensed under the New BSD License (arguably more liberal than the MPL). I figured the Digg community would appreciate the added transparency.
You're now free to take this code and use it in your own projects if it so pleases you (just give us a little love as specified by the license). You can even re-release this toolbar under your own project name with features you added. Or, better yet, submit a patch and your code just might be in the next release.
Keep your eyes peeled as we're going to be releasing a lot more code over the coming months. NOTE: The code currently says MPL, which is a mistake. We'll be modifying that ASAP. - toe_head2001, on 08/07/2008, -2/+5What's more awesome is that all Firefox extensions are open source.
- outreach417, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3yeah, yeah, ok already, so is firefox Open Source, so its nice of digg to follow suit, but the point is - who needs yet another toolbar, OSF or not?
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 08/07/2008, -1/+4> "Aren't all firefox extensions open source technically? Like I'm pretty sure if you just find the extension as an .xpi you just rename it to .zip and all the files will be inside."
As far as I've always been aware, Firefox extensions are just JavaScript, XUL, CSS, and images packed into an archive.
Although... it looks like newer extensions aren't even archived anymore. In my case, Firebug 1.2 and FireGestures 1.1.2 are both unpacked.
Unless I'm missing something, this is a non-story... - quidpro, on 08/07/2008, -1/+3Buried for mentioning "toolbar"
- m3mn0n, on 08/07/2008, -1/+3Good stuff.
Keep up the good work, joe and everyone at digg. - beatphys, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2How do you download it? There is no code/tool to download. How do you get the code? I went to the source tab at the Google site, and I tried to follow their explanation--it was no good.
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -1/+3The last thing I need is another toolbar. I have none, and I like it thst way. Screen realestate is priceless!
- OneLess, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2"Unbiased editors," how many seconds do you think it would take for people to start whining about them being biased and overstepping their bounds?
- clsslc, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2That's awesome! Another toolbar! Just what we needed!
- toe_head2001, on 08/07/2008, -2/+3All Firefox extensions are open source.
- kahrn, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1Ok. You live in your world without any toolbars.
Either *think* about what you write before you post it, or leave the tech section to those that do. - m3mn0n, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Don't do that. A few months ago digg decided to basically whipe all of our history besides the most recent stuff.
Made me mad because I had yet to delicious some really good links.
That said, I'd use delicious in combination with digg. - ReRunx5, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I use http://www.instapaper.com to bookmark pages that I want to read later.
- RHollister, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Is it just me or would it be nice to be able to import(or is it export) your dugg stores to your bookmarks folder on your computer? I almost use digg as a way to bookmark something, I would like to be able to have my diggs local.
maybe if I get some time ill look into this, since as the title says, its open source ;) - loconet, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Dammit people, just because you can see the source code for something does not mean it's "Open source".
- Tvrtko999, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1.. or install it, or at least know how to compile it. good point
- machej, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1It would be nice if you could download it!
- OneLess, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1They give you the command to get it, you just need subversion.
- Z_Man, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Why the hell is this a story?
- Mediaright, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I love it. Digg's trying to be nice here and service the community, and the lion's share of the comments are pretty much bagging on them. I guess you can't win here. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
- smoothmann, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Someone edit this code to pull new content from redtube.com and you've got yourself a WINNER
- neFariou5, on 08/07/2008, -4/+4I think this would be bigger news if it was a closed source addon.
Pretty shameless spamming for publicity. Sorry, but it's an unnecessary article. - Tvrtko999, on 08/20/2008, -0/+0del.icio.us is great for bookmarking
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Someone make a straight porn version for the love of open source and gaping holes!
- smoothmann, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0I do concur sir
- Frozenball, on 08/07/2008, -2/+2Sorry, but I don't care.
- phenom2k7, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0digging to bookmark most likely
- brixtonasias, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Go OpenSource
- euro22, on 12/17/2008, -0/+0A tech article on what should be a tech site? What are you complaining about? Atleast its not the regular 4chan crap.
- phenom2k7, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Are you on my 15" cigarette yellow CRT @ 800x600?
- bharless3329, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0What's wrong with digging something because you think it's cool?
- kahrn, on 08/17/2008, -1/+1Then why did you take the time to make a comment?
- beatphys, on 08/11/2008, -1/+1I don't even know how to download it, as much as get the code. I personally think this is a premature announcement. I am very frustrated with all of this hype. There is just NO substance to any of this. It is very agravating. I think you should just stick to reporting the mundane instead of talking about overly hyped toolbars.
- mangoman, on 04/11/2009, -0/+0Thanks - this might come in handy for a future project of mine!
