DHTML Color Picker (open source)
colorjack.com — The JavaScript is only 2k with gZip on! (4.5k otherwise) The entire package is nearly 300% smaller than it's nearest competitor, ColourMod. And, unlike it's competitor, the ColorJack Plugin is free to use + modify. It is a very simple + effective widget for your site.

- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4logojack!
- appy77, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2I like the Firefox Extension for "Color Picker" , it's also free plus it allows you to pick colors off of anywhere.
- jesirose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@appy77 - I think you missed the point. This is a picker to put on your site, for visitors to use to pick a color for something, and it gets returned to your site. Not for you to put in your browers. I like Fx's color picker, but this is not the same thing.
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Well, all dhtml apps are open source.
View -> Source -> FREE OPEN-SOURCE APPLICATION! - Lutz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9JacNet: Open Source, yes. Allowed to use on my own projects? not necessarily.
- jutl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Availability of the source does not make something 'open source'. The code has to be licensed in such a way as to permit modification and release of modifications (as well as some other stipulations see the OSI web site).
- JB1984, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Everyone must switch to this new javascript. It has a ton of advantages and is the wave of the future.
- gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3as a coder good php coder but mediocre designer, i find the ability to use this to grab the code for a color helpful. dugg.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2It's well implemented. I guess the next step is to modify the code to only generate web safe colours. Not that that will matter for much longer, but sometimes restriction is a good thing. Makes picking colours easier.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13web safe is hardly relevant anymore.....
- mGee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Screw "web-safe" colors. Those days are done. Colors are going to shift, it's a fact of life for a designer... How many people do you know who still display hundreds of colors.. or even thousands of colors?
I say, if a person hasn't upgraded their monitor in the past 8 years, then let them see colors displayed horribly... or if they are setting their new monitor to hundred or thousands of colors, then they don't care about the look of your site anyway, or anything for that matter.
All modern dispays can easily display millions of colors. - pengu, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3@mGee:
CLEARLY you aren't a graphic/print/film/web designer. colour (yes. there is a u in the word. just because you stupid yanks dont like it, doesnt mean you should change the spelling of it) is everything you jackass. - diggumjonez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The millions of colors claim is true for desktop and laptop systems, but most mobile pc's and phones are still in the thousands of colors.
Not that I care. If you can't see a website the way I designed it, there are plenty of other sites on the net.
- codenexus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems very nice. I can definitely see myself using this. :)
- sodascape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A keeper! Very cool
- condorhauck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I like it in Firefox, but in IE7 it has some issues displaying proper. Still worthy of a digg!
- Conquerist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd definitely appreciate compatability with ie7. After all, ie7 is becoming the primary browser for Windows XP.
(Yes, I know I'll be dugg down for not saying that Firefox is better :-P) - Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with you guys. Anyone making a web application and including this plugin would want it to be cross browser compatible.
- mudx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone have a fix for this? It looks like a simple CSS hack, but do not have IE7 to test it out... You'd think getting it working in IE6 would make it IE7 compatible, but, nooooo! They are always trying to be a little bit different.
- Conquerist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd definitely appreciate compatability with ie7. After all, ie7 is becoming the primary browser for Windows XP.
- addzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is about perfect for a color picker. Clean and simple. Thanks!
The color selection circle is not in the center of the cursor crosshair, and it snaps at the top and left side only for me.
I would be tempted add hue, saturation, value, inputs and lock toggle buttons at the top.. and swatches, and and....- Angoulemmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oops wrong tread ... digg me down
- bryceman111, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2@pengu
Color is spelled "c-o-l-o-r". There is no "u".
Unless of course you are in Britain and were taught "Commonwealth English" as opposed to America where we speak "American English".
"American English...the newer, improved English." ...Wow, I may get Dugg Down just because of my long comment. Ahh well.- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4No, us in ENGLAND speak our language, ENGLISH. You americans just change the spelling. And, i quote this "American English...the newer, improved English.". What? The REAL english is THE english.
You are just acting like some idiotic american 2 year old, grow up and come back to digg. - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@JacNet
For such a language snob, you should know its "We in ENGLAND" not "Us in ENGLAND" - pengu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0its nothing to do with being in England (which im not). its the same English everywhere else in the world, but apparently it's too complicated for you americans.
- Angoulemmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The topic of EnglishEnglish vs AmericanEnglish came up over drinks last night and we came to the conclusion that in England we speak english and Americans speak an early form of Leet.
- riverrunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay can't we just deal with and enjoy different spellings, words and dialects from other parts of the world? How hard is it to read color vs colour and who cares. People treat spelling and grammar like it is some sort of physics equation that is truth and you know what? Its not! Society can and will change language so get over it.
Anyway I very much like this culla picka (gangsta spelling).
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4No, us in ENGLAND speak our language, ENGLISH. You americans just change the spelling. And, i quote this "American English...the newer, improved English.". What? The REAL english is THE english.
- mrniceash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice. This is the first color picker plugin I knew in fact. Cool.
- bean1975, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1farbtastic plugin of jQuery is much better...
- UnConeD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Get it from:
http://acko.net/dev/farbtastic
It also uses HSL space instead of HSV/HSB, and is true WYSIWYG.
- UnConeD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Get it from:
- eurleif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I made something similar to this a while ago: http://ecritters.biz/colorselector/ . Mine isn't quite as small as this one, but it seems to run a bit faster, and it lets you modify the hex value if necessary.
- ddrirc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yours seems to run much faster/smoother for me.
- dbrennan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nice in firefox, but needs to work in ie7
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hm.. If you select black and then click some other place on the colorbar on the right, the color in the window goes white!?
- jferrari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could have done with this yesterday, I ended up buying colourmod (it is only $5), but it does include a lot of other code to manage a dropdown selector, cookies & style modifiers - so saves a lot of time.
- wickedman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2does not work in IE 6 & Opera 9
description is inaccurate - ronnknee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mm interesting. What can this be used for though?
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Description is inaccurate. Although the script itself is about 4k, the whole package needed is actually 24k.
- bogolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would anyone even bother himself with a buggy script while there is a free Pixie for ages?
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, this color picker is horrible.
it conflicts with basically any javascript / css you could possibly have already, and is a terrible choice if you just want something you can plug in. - jcrada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hi! Wonderful Color Picker... I would really like to use it for a commercial application. Is it possible to use for free? if so, providing the license is enough or what should i do in order to use it?
Thanks a lot.
Wonderful Culla Picka... jejeje (lol, riverrunner)... - devaka, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1See also Javascript DHTML Color Picker http://cpicker.com/
