Creating Google Custom Search Engines
onlamp.com — A custom search engine (CSE) tells Google which sites to search and which to avoid when dealing with a search query. This makes it much easier to get specific, guided answers to questions about a specific subject area. If you create a CSE you can use your expertise in a subject to control where Google looks for information about that topic.

- thailand1972, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Why is this on the front page of Digg? CSE is not new and there was a more interesting post about CSE already today : http://www.digg.com/software/Google_Custom_Search_Setting_The_Bar_For_Vertical_Search_Engines. Also, 68 diggs and just 2 comments now?
- SanTe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because digg is not a news site, hence it doesn't have to be "new," just "interesting," so people can "digg" it.
- Jleagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well said. Obviously not everyone saw it first time roud as they are still digging it.
- sark666, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The article says which sites to search and which to avoid, but I only see the ability to whitelist sites. Is there some way to blacklist domains? Do any of the seach api's (yahoo's msn) provide blacklisting capabilities?
- svivian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Um, what's wrong with the site: operator? For example,
chicken recipe site:about.com
or for multiple sites:
chicken recipe site:about.com OR allrecipes.com
Much quicker than opening a bookmark, logging into some interface and searching...- Jleagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Using a custom search engine is much quicker if you want to search all your 20 gaming etc sites all in one go.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2How sophisticated of a search engine do you need to lookup "boobies" ??
- Jleagle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Even MSN can handle that one :P
- kcornwell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2check this custom search engine...
http://www.googleitbitch.com - chadell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Google api and CSE can be fun if you can come up with practical and useful apps, e.g. http://richlist.googlemashups.com
- PURPLEDRINK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1this is retarded...
1. How is whitelisting websites going to help me find webpages if I already know the website-- doesn't find anything I couldn't already find. Nothing to do with searching.
2. This 'customization' needs to be able to have more features than this. I can just go to the websites and hit 'search site'... plus I need to take all the time to customize by finding and adding each website.... of which I could only possibly use this search a few times (since it will be VERY static)....
3. And finally, like I'm going to create a CSE about recipe ideas... you know, in case I need to find a recipe very quick and probably won't remember to use this crap?
Basically I can create a search engine for stuff I already know how to find. - targ8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Targ8.com in top 10 'all-in-one' search engines
'All in one' search engines often called 'meta' search engines have been available to use online for many years but have never been more popular than single search engines like Google, Yahoo and Microsofts' live search. However, one new entrant might change that.
Rather than merge all search results into one results page like most meta-search engines, Targ8 simply offers its customers the choice of 8 different search engines to search from, on the Targ8 homepage. But that's not all, Targ8 offers 8 of everything; - news sites, shopping sites, video and image searches, social networking sites and free-ad searches, all in one place.
Its proving popular as Targ8 has moved into the 9th most popular 'all-in-one' search engine category and is now in the top 10,000 most popular worldwide websites.*
Neil Bant, the founder of Targ8.com said, "Our aim was to make searching popular sites from one place quick and simple for everyone. Its great to be listed alongside established sites like Dogpile, Mamma and Metacrawler, but simply giving customers the ability to search the site of their choice was our aim."
"We would like to thank our customers on the social network sites for using and providing feedback on Targ8.com. We will continue to improve Targ8 with your feedback, to make Targ8 a great starting page for people to use. And remember our slogan: Don't Google it, Targ8 it."
Targ8 was built in the UK and has both US and UK sites. As the British public love an underdog, it would be great to see a UK developed site, dominate in the search market.
