- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I don't blame him. His nick is "firecrotch". I'd be that way too..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is awesome! I use .htaccess for certain things, but I can't for the life of me remember the syntax for custom rewrite rules. I usually just end up copying them over from other sites I've designed.
*dugg*! - MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Check this out, it's quite handy: http://www.ilovejackdaniels.com/apache/mod_rewrite-cheat-sheet/
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Geeze firecrotch. Thanks for pointing out how digg works so deftly. I guess I should cut and paste your quote into every story you have submitted too.
- MrMuskrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6".htaccess is the file extension." Wrong! The author knows nothing about *nix based OSes and hidden or "dot" files.
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You do realize that digg is for sharing stuff like this, right? If applied your logic then digg shouldn't even exist and everyone would just use Google. People can post whatever they want here. If it has merit it will rise to the top. That's all that matters. You comment was and still is useless.
- westwind429, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dugg for quality and to spite all the "Way to Google" *****.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4also check these out http://cooletips.de/htaccess/ - htaccess generator
and apache's own document http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/htaccess.html - eddieroger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice. Something actually useful shows up on digg, and someone has to come and weigh down on those who are actually glad that this came along.
- dynacrylic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very nice! Bookmarked and saved for further use. Excellent dig!
- alx359, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm, it seems still at a wannabe level yet. The one below says production and it's free
http://www.troxo.com/products/iispassword/ - hurfydurfur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good section on preventing hot-linking (including forwarding to a "stop it" image). I'm certain it is elsewhere but +digg for reference.
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks for this Gregd. I was just about to brush up on a few things regarding .htaccess files. Good find.
- zefiris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Very interesting read.
- joshwalderbach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very nice little tutorial. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
- sirsteveh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice, but some of us are sick of Apache. I use lighttpd whenever I can; it's far less bulky, and almost as featureful (they still lack .htaccess). Not entirely relevant to the article, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
- m1k372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In the password protection page, they suggest to use a "handy-dandy tool" to encrypt a password. There's no way I'd give these guys a password. Just use the htpasswd utility that comes with Apache.
- Teo76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3A project for using .htaccess under IIS is underway at http://www.micronovae.com/IISRewrite.html
- samec123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0http://www.aroup.com/en/
- TrevorBramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's neat and I don't mean to take away from their efforts, but there's been a great IIS-compatible URL rewriting solution available for some time.

It's not free, but if you're running everything on Microsoft already, I doubt you'd expect it to be. - Raistlfiren, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Great Digg GregD!
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Oh and uh, by the way:
"There are similar capabilities for NT servers, though in my professional experience and personal opinion, NT's ability in these areas is severely handicapped. But that's not what we're here for."
Just to make you and the author are on the same page.
... - sixdays, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Seriously, who gives a *****? MS products are useless.
- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3thank you!!!!11!1!onee!!1e1evn!!1
- mechaboy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1I actually already knew about this site because of this rad new tool that helps you find information on the Internet. http://www.google.com
- firecrotch, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1The first thing anyone (at least anyone with any common sense) does when they want to find out about something is use Google. You shouldn't have to rely on someone else to tell you about the very first Google result - anyone who has ever needed to know anything about .htaccess should already know about this site, simply because it's the first Google result on the topic.
- firecrotch, on 10/12/2007, -29/+1Wow, you know how to type ".htaccess" into Google! Great job!
