For a start off, he doesn't even know the right names for things, which is only going to confuse newbies (and how are they supposed to google for more information when they are googling the wrong words?)
"common CSS attributes" should read "common CSS properties"
"applying CSS to a HTML attribute" should read "selecting elements by their attributes"
"redefining a tag" - I've been using CSS for the past six years or so, but I can only hazard a guess at what he means by that.
> Currently there is a working draft for the CSS level 3 specification.
CSS 3 is a group of specifications, some of which are at working draft status, some of which are candidate recommendations, etc.
> Currently Firefox leads the way in CSS
Not true. Different browsers support different things; there's no clear leader. By property count, Opera probably has the lead. By conformance, Safari probably has the lead. Gecko will probably be the last big browser apart from Internet Explorer to pass the Acid2 test.
The very first code example won't work with XHTML.
"Tags" are not "elements". Don't say "put it in the head tag" because if the person does that, they will end up with a broken document. You mean "put it in the head *element*".
It recommends setting the font size in pixels with no discussion of the negative effects of this.
It sets the font colour without explaining why you should also set the background at the same time.
Don't use the word "HTML object" when you mean "element". You'll get newbies confused with actual HTML objects (i.e. the object element type).
It uses invalid HTML in at least one of the examples.
It skips really important concepts like floating to talk about esoteric features like generated content that very few people could find a use for. Of course, it doesn't actually give the name "generated content", so a newbie would be completely lost when looking for more information.
This tutorial fails every rule of thumb I use to decide whether somebody knows what they are talking about. I can't recommend this. - Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People digg the articles they find interesting.
CSS newbies find articles like this interesting.
CSS newbies are the least well-equipped to judge the quality of an article like this.
It's not hard to see how things like this end up on the front page.
If all you want to do is fool around with CSS to satisfy your curiosity, then this tutorial isn't so bad. But if you want to actually make a website, there are much better resources out there. Dave Shea & Molly Holzschlag's book that people have already mentioned is good, and goes much further than this tutorial. There are also links to some very good resources in this article on Dave Shea's website:

- vagrantradio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice indeed. Will come in handy one of those times I blank out on the coding.

Thanks. Getting it now. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get CSS Zen Garden, a good book.
- skell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for the great CSS content and also Dugg for the site's potential to grow. Hope to see lots more useful info soon!
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course we can't forget the ultimate CSS2 reference:

- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wish I had this a year ago. Had to learn HTML in a day (easy part) and CSS in like a couple weeks (hard part). Yea, that stuff is best learned through trial and error and a two week frame is hardly a good amount of time to cram for that purpose =P
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a good quide on Wikibooks too.
- wrex00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very good guide. Thorough. Yet, like Bogtha, I did noticed some fatal flaws and general misnomers in his conventions.

http://www.egodev.comhttp://www.egodev.com - Origin_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait, I don't know how to use CSS and I wanted a simple guide to start learning it, but this story did nothing but confuse me. I'm going to see about that Zen Garden book instead. After reading Bogtha writing a seriously enlightened post regarding the story, I'm even more confused how others have commented on how the link was a "very good guide", is everyone's ***** or what?

I would vote for "ignorant" or "lazy" or "confused" before "*****", but it really does surprise me when posts like this get so many Diggs. - shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good post Bogtha
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good guide..
