In all seriousness, privacy is something that I don't think enough people take seriously in this modern age. - ruddykins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Kids are in a different category, relative to their parents (who are LEGALLY responsible for them), but pertaining to unauthoritized access to their details privacy is even MORE critical than for an adult!
- nachos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Privacy is really important, and watching this talk makes me realize, I have not being doing my part as a software developer to respect users privacy. Hell I log way too much information, just to make debugging a little easier on the off chance I have to debug it in production. I'd encoruage all software developers out there to watch this talk, and take its message to heart.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Did you watch the talk man?
- csccalum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Who has the time? I mean, sure privacy cool, but what with the insane deadlines I face, I really don't have the time to go back over my debugging logic and remove everything that could potentially be logging sensitive information.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I think you meant ( http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~hkarau/stats.html ) . They also have a webcam of the office ( http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/office/webcam-streaming ... ) (why the machines aren't on fire I don't know :P )
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The talk is on slashdot front page right now, so if you're interested in seeing the graphs of the servers, you can take a look over here at http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~hkarau/stats.html.
- joesommers0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0She makes a good point that security != privacy. Just using e.g. SSL doesn't ensure privacy. Destroying personal information after its no longer needed does.
- pcprofile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Maybe this needs to be shared with Microsoft who are in the process of offering to independent software vendors source code that provides the opportunity to "turn on/turn off features/functionality at their whim, gather statistics and monitor activity on your computer systems - with or without your approval. see http://www.pcprofile.com/Microsoft_Stealth_Updates ...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'd recommend skipping the first bit where the president guy is introducing the other person [wow he takes a long time!]
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0microsoft and steward of privacy have never exactly fit together in my mind
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I find it ironic that there is a Windows Vista add which says "Easily manage and monitor your kids privacy" being displayed (for me, right now). When we think of privacy its always our own privacy, not anyone elses....
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Bah, user privacy my bottom. Information wants to be free! Now the government privacy komisar wanting to implement biometrics to 'protect' me seems like some crazy leftist nutjob after my vital fluids.
