Dugg - jzimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a well documented tutorial.
Re-inventing the wheel or not, a good tutorial can lead a developer to build on it, change it, or incorporate ideas into other projects.
With CakePHP newbies they mostly start with the Blog tutorial in the manual. Why write another blog software when there are so many out there?
It is a tool for learning and present ideas in a manner that someone can easily understand it. - christophersisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah... and us lesser advanced programmers certainly can't use the practice writing usable code. + Digg for good newbie practice.
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another article from IBM that seems to use AJAX just for sake of using it and riding "2.0" hype...
* There's plenty of good RSS readers, web-based or not.
* It's possible to implement nice RSS reader in AJAX without PHP+MySQL backend.
* PHP+MySQL implementation doesn't really need AJAX. For developers server-side-only RSS is often more important. - yoshifan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can read XML (RSS) files with plain javascript, so there is no need for AJAX or PHP.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think that this is particularly user friendly.
Those who don't understand programming will likely ***** themselves. You know they'll just whack it on their server, load up a blank screen and ask 'what next?'. - karmadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is a similar implementation I came up with, for a list of blogs page, using feed2js, prototype.js, ajax, php, and wordpress. http://www.counterjumper.com/blogcrew (click on the feed icon to activate the reader)
The first version of this made use of tooltip.js, and here is a tutorial on how that was done: http://counterjumper.com/2006/04/25/rss-feed-tooltip-using-ajax/ - kibmcz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks... Gregarius was just what i was looking for. Lately google reader (my previous feed reader) has been not getting any feeds. I now run Gregarius from my own site... at least it will be more reliable
- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's much more to a feed reader than to just parse XML, it requires features such as caching the feeds and then running a server-side check to compare the latest feed with the cached feed. That way you can get updates of new items on your feed list.
- PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://gregarius.net/ use it ;>
- kiddailey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was anyone ever able to download the sample code? Seems the site is just giving a down for maintenance message when you try to download.
- DENiAL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, to many people miss the point of a tutorial, it's "usually" not meant to be a completed project but rather a way to learn how to do something, then build off of it.
- DanaG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is a tutorial on IBM's "DeveloperWorks" site ( http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/ ), which is IBM's developers support website. Sorta similar to Microsoft MSDN website... or CodeGuru ( http://www.codeguru.com/ ) or The Code Project ( http://www.codeproject.com/ ) or a developers site like that.
- jole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1can someone please explain to me why all these random things show up on IBM? I thought IBM was a computer company..."international business machines"? Since when do they write tutorials on creating AJAX RSS Readers and make cartoons about linux?
(please excuse my ignorance) - raouldlv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i made my own: http://jf.servehttp.com:81/.rss_pjc/
- shr3kst3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I came up with a RSS to JSON converter that is a lot less time consuming and only requires you to write 11 lines of code (plus what ever code you need to convert JSON to the HTML display you want).
http://www.engrowe.com/2006/05/08/how-to-convert-a-rss-feed-to-json-in-php/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2KISS. Use Monkeychow to get your feeds... http://www.monkeychow.org
- Piku, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Of course, we need to reinvent the wheel every time.
